Adds `UpsertCertAuthority` to the `teleport.v1.trust.TrustService`
and deprecates the HTTP api. The `services.Trust` interface was
also updated to include a `context.Context` in both
`CreateCertAuthority` and `UpsertCertAuthority.
To ensure backwards compatibility the `auth.Client` will first
attempt to use the gRPC client and if that fails with a not
implemented error it will fallback to using HTTP.
Part of #6394
Adds `DeleteCertAuthority` to the trust grpc service and deprecates
the legacy HTTP api. Additionally the `DeleteCertAuthority` method
in the `services.Trust` interface now takes a `context.Context` as
the first parameter. In order to plumb the context through from all
the call sites `DeleteRemoteCluster` from `services.Presence` was
also modified to take a `context.Context` as the first parameter.
The `http.Client.Transport` created in `newWebClient` wraps a
chain of `http.RoundTripper` over an underlying `http.Transport`.
Since we cannot guarantee that each `http.RoundTipper` has a
`CloseIdleConnections` method the usage of
`defer clt.CloseIdleConnections()` does not guarantee that the http
connections created during Find/Ping/etc are closed.
To prevent leaking connections implementations of `http.RoundTripper`
have added a `CloseIdleConnections` method added that forwards the
request on to the wrapped interface. The `otelhttp.Transport` does
not implement this method either so care has been taken to wrap it
in a `http.RoundTripper` which will call the root transport in
`enforceCloseIdleConnections`. An upstream issue has been filed
with otelhttp: https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-go-contrib/issues/3543
to get the method added to their `Transport` implementation.
This wasn't noticed prior to upgrading to go1.20 becuase prior to
[this](https://github.com/golang/go/commit/4e7e7ae1406c70d9cc0809ec11105a55a60a0b70)
commit the `ReadHeaderTimeout` set on the Proxy web api http.Server
would cause the connection to appear idle and get terminated by the
server.
`TestWebClientClosesIdleConnections` was added to capture the leak
in connections as reported in #22757 and prevent any regressions.
* Move the authorizer into its own package.
The Authorizer and associated functions and constants have been moved into
their own package `authz`. This will allow us to more easily create separate
services for gRPC functionality so that we're not pushing as much into the
`lib/auth` package.
Though this PR is large, the only actual code change here is making
`ContextForLocalUser` exported and changing the `permissions_test.go` so that
it doesn't rely on the `lib/auth` package.
* Use context functions.
* Test and linting fixes.
* Add in a temporary alias file to ensure e still compiles.
* Use functions instead of var aliases for performance reasons.
* Adding in godocs, cleaning up tests.
* Fix tests.
* Add a few more aliases.
The ConnectionStatus of the RemoteCluster resource was never being
set in UpdateRemoteCluster causing the backend to always contain
the original value. GetRemoteCluster, unfortunately, does an update
of the resource, yet it always returned the correct information, which
made things very confusing since `tctl get` didn't reflect the
actual backend. To make matters worse the initial value was not
explicitly set which meant it defaulted to an empty string.
A call to SetConnectionStatus was added to UpdateRemoteCluster so
it's value is actually persisted. Trusted Clusters are also now
explicitly initialized with status offline to avoid ambiguity. The
actual status of the resource will be updated appropriately when
the tunnel connections are verified.
Additionally TestRemoteClustersCRUD was added to capture this issue
and prevent any regressions.
Fixes#22006
* WIP adding OpenSSH CA
* fix creating OpenSSH CA for tests
* fix a test name and tctl usage flag
* fix 'tctl status' not displaying openssh CA sometimes
* add OpenSSH CA to TestInit_bootstrap, remove TLS key pair
* add OpenSSH CA to a few more places
* make help text of 'tctl auth rotate' more helpful and accurate
* fix web cert export test
* tbot doesn't need to know about OpenSSH CA
* address feedback
* fix comment formatting
* Improve site and trusted cluster logging and availability
Moves `UpdateTrustedCluster` logging from debug to info so default
logging level includes when admin operations are performed to
establish or remove trust. Alters `remoteSite` such that it logs
in the same manner as `localSite`
Cherry-picks some of the availability changes made in #18050 to
ensure that agents spawned for trusted clusters are more robust to
connection issues.
* Ensure metric `remote_cluster` reflects current state
The metric wasn't properly updated when remote sites went offline
of when remote cluster resources were removed. Any change to the
remoteSite state or the remoteCluster resource are now accurately
reflected in the metric.
* Add tracking of outbound connections to remote clusters
The metric `trust_clusters` existed and was exported, but was never
used anywhere. Now when the `RemoteClusterTunnelManager` starts
and stops agent pools it will create and delete a counter for the
cluster. Within the `AgentPool` the metric is set to the number
of connected proxies within `updateConnectedProxies`.

* More cache bypassing during init and rotations
* Rename Services to Uncached in auth.Server
* Further cleanups
* Don't start the auth cache immediately
* Go back to Services rather than Uncached
* Comments and a missing method
Leverage otelhttp to generate spans for http clients and http handlers.
Additionally add spans for grpc clients and servers by using the
otelgrpc interceptors. This is step one in implementation of RFD 65.
Until further work is done, the spans generated will be a no-op
until the tracing provider is initialized.
* Send Teleport version when adding remote cluster
* Send Database CA only if remote cluster is v10+
* Fix existing test and new one for v9 trusted CA validation
* Add DatabaseCAMinVersion constant and replace hardcoded versions.
Introduce Database Certificate Authority. New CA is used by Database Access to sign database certificates making them independent from Host CA.

* Fix goroutine and memory leak in watchCertAuthorities
The CA Watcher was blocking both on writing to a channel when the watcher
was closed and on HTTP calls that had no request timeout or context passed
to cause cancellation.
All resourceWatcher implementations that had a bug which may cause them to block
on writing to a channel forever were fixed by selecting on the write and ctx.Done.
Adding context.Context to all Get/Put/Post/Delete methods on the auth HTTPClient to
force callers to propagate context. Prior all calls used context.TODO which
prevents requests from being properly cancelled.
Add context propagation to RotateCertAuthority, RotateExternalCertAuthority,
GetCertAuthority, GetCertAuthorities. This is needed to get the correct ctx
from the CertAtuhorityWatcher all the way down to the HTTPClient that makes
the call.
Closes#10648
* Enforce that a leaf cluster has sent us just a single host CA
* Test coverage for validateTrustedCluster
* Add `tctl rm cert_authority/kind/name`
* Check against existing trusted clusters
* Add certificate renewal bot
This adds a new `tbot` tool to continuously renew a set of
certificates after registering with a Teleport cluster using a
similar process to standard node joining.
This makes some modifications to user certificate generation to allow
for certificates that can be renewed beyond their original TTL, and
exposes new gRPC endpoints:
* `CreateBotJoinToken` creates a join token for a bot user
* `GenerateInitialRenewableUserCerts` exchanges a token for a set of
certificates with a new `renewable` flag set
A new `tctl` command, `tctl bots add`, creates a bot user and calls
`CreateBotJoinToken` to issue a token. A bot instance can then be
started using a provided command.
* Cert bot refactoring pass
* Use role requests to split renewable certs from end-user certs
* Add bot configuration file
* Use `teleport.dev/bot` label
* Remove `impersonator` flag on initial bot certs
* Remove unnecessary `renew` package
* Misc other cleanup
* Do not pass through `renewable` flag when role requests are set
This adds additional restrictions on when a certificate's `renewable`
flag is carried over to a new certificate. In particular, it now also
denies the flag when either role requests are present, or the
`disallowReissue` flag has been previously set.
In practice `disallow-reissue` would have prevented any undesired
behavior but this improves consistency and resolves a TODO.
* Various tbot UX improvements; render SSH config
* Fully flesh out config template rendering
* Fix rendering for SSH configuration templates
* Added `String()` impls for destination types
* Improve certificate renewal logging; show more detail
* Properly fall back to default (all) roles
* Add mode hints for files
* Add/update copyright headers
* Add stubs for tbot init and watch commands
* Add gRPC endpoints for managing bots
* Add `CreateBot`, `DeleteBot`, and `GetBotUsers` gRPC endpoints
* Replace `tctl bot (add|rm|ls)` implementations with gRPC calls
* Define a few new constants, `DefaultBotJoinTTL`, `BotLabel`,
`BotGenerationLabel`
* Fix outdated destination flag in example tbot command
* Bugfix pass for demo
* Fixed a few nil pointer derefs when using config from CLI args
* Properly create destination if `--destination-dir` flag is used
* Remove improper default on CLI flag
* `DestinationConfig` is now a list of pointers
* Address first wave of review feedback
Fixes the majority of smaller issues caught by reviewers, thanks all!
* Add doc comments for bot.go functions
* Return the token TTL from CreateBot
* Split initial user cert issuance from `generateUserCerts()`
Issuing initial renewable certificate ended up requiring a lot of
hacks to skip checks that prevented anonymous bots from getting
certs even though we'd verified their identity elsewhere (via token).
This reverts all those hacks and splits initial bot cert logic into a
dedicated `generateInitialRenewableUserCerts()` function which should
make the whole process much easier to follow.
* Set bot traits to silence log messages
* tbot log message consistency pass
* Resolve lints
* Add config tests
* Remove CreateBotJoinToken endpoint
Users should instead use the CreateBot/DeleteBot endpoints.
* Create a fresh private key for every impersonated identity renewal
* Hide `config` subcommand
* Rename bot label prefix to `teleport.internal/`
* Use types.NewRole() to create bot roles
* Clean up error handling in custom YAML unmarshallers
Also, add notes about the supported YAML shapes.
* Fetch proxy host via gRPC Ping() instead of GetProxies()
* Update lib/auth/bot.go

* Fix some review comments
* Add renewable certificate generation checks (#10098)
* Add renewable certificate generation checks
This adds a new validation check for renewable certificates that
maintains a renewal counter as both a certificate extension and a
user label. This counter is used to ensure only a single certificate
lineage can exist: for example, if a renewable certificate is stolen,
only one copy of the certificate can be renewed as the generation
counter will not match
When renewing a certificate, first the generation counter presented
by the user (via their TLS identity) is compared to a value stored
with the associated user (in a new `teleport.dev/bot-generation`
label field). If they aren't equal, the renewal attempt fails.
Otherwise, the generation counter is incremented by 1, stored to the
database using a `CompareAndSwap()` to ensure atomicity, and set on
the generated certificate for use in future renewals.
* Add unit tests for the generation counter
This adds new unit tests to exercise the generation counter checks.
Additionally, it fixes two other renewable cert tests that were
failing.
* Remove certRequestGeneration() function
* Emit audit event when cert generations don't match
* Fully implement `tctl bots lock`
* Show bot name in `tctl bots ls`
* Lock bots when a cert generation mismatch is found
* Make CompareFailed respones from validateGenerationLabel() more actionable

* Refactor most uses of `UserMetadata` into a handful of functions
* Add access requests to `UserMetadata`
* Explanation for the reserved field in SessionStart
* Add tests for ParseTeleportRoles
Updates #9752
* Be more tolerant when parsing system roles.
Our original attempt at canonicalizing roles didn't work for system
roles using camelcase, resulting in an awkward user experience.
Here we maintain a mapping of allowed inputs to their corresponding
system roles, and perform a case-insensitive lookup. This allows us
to support camelcase roles, and has the advantage of permitting
_ word separators as well.
Fixes#9752
* Refactor *SystemRole.Check()
Rather than having to list each role here, we rely on the new
roleMappings set to validate the role.
Additionally, remove the LegacyClusterTokenType role. This change
is guaranteed to be backwards compatible because we check for
RoleTrustedCluster everywhere we were checking for
LegacyClusterTokenType, and our roleMappings will convert the old
string that represented LegacyClusterTokenType to RoleTrustedCluster.
* hsm: migrate CA storage schema
Migrate types.CertAuthorityV2 schema according to
https://github.com/gravitational/teleport/blob/master/rfd/0025-hsm.md#backend-storage
Includes proto changes, types.CertAuthority wrapper changes and data
migration.
Note that we keep and update the old fields for backwards-compatibility.
If a cluster is upgraded to v7 and then downgraded back to v6,
everything should keep working.
* Address review feedback
* Remove JSON schema validation
Removing JSON schema validation from all resource unmarshalers.
--- what JSON schema gets us
Looking at the JSON schema spec and our usage, here are the supposed benefits:
- type validation - make sure incoming data uses the right types for the right fields
- required fields - make sure that mandatory fields are set
- defaulting - set defaults for fields
- documentation - schema definition for our API objects
Note that it does _not_ do:
- fail on unknown fields in data
- fail on a required field with an empty value
--- what replaces it
Based on the above, it may seem like JSON schema provides value.
But it's not the case, let's break it down one by one:
- type validation - unmarshaling JSON into a typed Go struct does this
- required fields - only checks that the field was provided, doesn't actually check that a value is set (e.g. `"name": ""` will pass the `required` check)
- so it's pretty useless for any real validation
- and we already have a separate place for proper validation - `CheckAndSetDefaults` methods
- defaulting - done in `CheckAndSetDefaults` methods
- `Version` is the only annoying field, had to add it in a bunch of objects
- documentation - protobuf definitions are the source of truth for our API schema
--- the benefits
- performance - schema validation does a few rounds of `json.Marshal/Unmarshal` in addition to actual validation; now we simply skip all that
- maintenance - no need to keep protobuf and JSON schema definitions in sync anymore
- creating new API objects - one error-prone step removed
- (future) fewer dependencies - we can _almost_ remove the Go libraries for schema validation (one transient dependency keeping them around)
* Remove services.SkipValidation
No more JSON schema validation so this option is a noop.
Fixes#5352
```yaml
allow:
impersonate:
users: ['alice', 'bob']
roles: ['*']
where: 'contains(user.spec.traits["groups"], impersonate_role.traits)'
```
Adds "impersonator" to all X.509 and SSH client certs
issued using impersonation and does best effort to track
requests by impersonators in audit events.
Limits certs TTL to the impersonator's max session TTL.
Prevents impersonating users to recursively impersonate
other users.
Allows impersonating users to renew their own certificate,
for example to set route to cluster.
Adds missing token permission for editor role.
Fixes#3604
This commit adds support for cluster_labels
role parameter limiting access to remote clusters by label.
New tctl update rc provides interface to set labels on remote clusters.
Consider two clusers, `one` - root and `remote` - leaf.
```bash
$ tsh clusters
Cluster Name Status
------------ ------
one online
two online
```
Create the trusted cluster join token with labels:
```bash
$ tctl tokens add --type=trusted_cluster --labels=env=prod
```
Every cluster joined using this token will inherit env:prod labels.
Alternatively, update remote cluster labels by modifying
`rc` command. Letting remote clusters to propagate their labels
creates a problem of rogue clusters updating their labels to bad values.
Instead, administrator of root cluster control the labels
using remote clusters API without fear of override:
```bash
$ tctl get rc
kind: remote_cluster
metadata:
name: two
status:
connection: online
last_heartbeat: "2020-09-14T03:13:59.35518164Z"
version: v3
```
```bash
$ tctl update rc/two --set-labels=env=prod
cluster two has been updated
```
```bash
$ tctl get rc
kind: remote_cluster
metadata:
labels:
env: prod
name: two
status:
connection: online
last_heartbeat: "2020-09-14T03:13:59.35518164Z"
```
Update the role to deny access to prod env:
```yaml
kind: role
metadata:
name: dev
spec:
allow:
logins: [root]
node_labels:
'*': '*'
# Cluster labels control what clusters user can connect to. The wildcard ('*') means
# any cluster. If no role in the role set is using labels and cluster is not labeled,
# the cluster labels check is not applied. Otherwise, cluster labels are always enforced.
# This makes the feature backwards-compatible.
cluster_labels:
'env': 'staging'
deny:
# cluster labels control what clusters user can connect to. The wildcard ('*') means
# any cluster. By default none is set in deny rules to preserve backwards compatibility
cluster_labels:
'env': 'prod'
```
```bash
$ tctl create -f dev.yaml
```
Cluster two is now invisible to user with `dev` role.
```bash
$ tsh clusters
Cluster Name Status
------------ ------
one online
```
This commit introduces GRPC API for streaming sessions.
It adds structured events and sync streaming
that avoids storing events on disk.
You can find design in rfd/0002-streaming.md RFD.
Prior to this commit, RemoteCluster resource data was dynamically
generated from TunnelConnection resources.
Keep using TunnelConnections, but record any changes to RemoteCluster in
the backend too. This lets us preserve the LastHeartbeat field after
TunnelConnections get deleted (as they do when a reverse tunnel
disconnects).
Our auth middleware already attaches a TLS identity as context value.
Plumb contexts through and extract the username when recording events.
If the received context doesn't have an identity attached, use "system"
as username.
Lots of noise here due to missing context.Context plumbing :(
We should eventually plumb contexts to all those RPC interfaces.
Updates #3816
This commit improves performance of teleport with
hundreds of connected trusted clusters.
TLS handshake protocol expects server to send a
list of trusted certificate authorities to the client
and client must present certificate signed by those.
With Teleport current implementation, every remote cluster
client is signed by local certificate and is not cross
signed.
Auth server now expects clients to announce the
remote cluster they are connecting from using SNI.
Auth server will send only certificate authorities
of the cluster announced via SNI.
Alternative idea is to cross sign the certificate
of the client of the remote cluster. We will explore
this idea in the next releases.
This commit also removes unnecessary reads
from the database to check the remote server status
that slows down user interface and other clients.
This is done at the expense of proxies showing
servers as offline in case if this individual
proxy does not have the connection, although
it's a small UI price to pay for not reading
the database, as proxy will eventually
get the connection thanks to the discovery
protocol.
