* Move the authorizer into its own package.
The Authorizer and associated functions and constants have been moved into
their own package `authz`. This will allow us to more easily create separate
services for gRPC functionality so that we're not pushing as much into the
`lib/auth` package.
Though this PR is large, the only actual code change here is making
`ContextForLocalUser` exported and changing the `permissions_test.go` so that
it doesn't rely on the `lib/auth` package.
* Use context functions.
* Test and linting fixes.
* Add in a temporary alias file to ensure e still compiles.
* Use functions instead of var aliases for performance reasons.
* Adding in godocs, cleaning up tests.
* Fix tests.
* Add a few more aliases.
Improve UserMetadata audit logging by using `tlsca.Identity.GetUserMetadata()`
more consistently in audit logs.
There are still a handful of logs that don't include the data above for lack of
context (in the general sense and in the Go context sense), but many more
entries now call back to identity in some way.
Related to gravitational/teleport.e#514.
- When user registers or resets, when running into
policy errors, we don't send back an error, but instead
a 200 (to indicate user has successfully registered/resetted)
and a flag to determine if policy was enabled
- Send back policy configurations for cluster config,
this will allow the web UI login page to just display
redirection messages without login attempts
- For role configured policy, login attempts will be
required and a specific error will be returned so that
the UI can then better redirect the user
While looking up github.com/gokyle/hotp I found some old deprecation warnings
and decided to address them.
* Remove HOTP support

* Check if device register requested pwdless, response is pwdless capable
Wire passwordless registration and authorization into Auth and Proxy APIs, thus
making passwordless logins possible.
API changes are described by RFD 52: Passwordless [1].
#9160
[1] https://github.com/gravitational/teleport/blob/master/rfd/0052-passwordless.md#authentication-api-changes
* Add passwordless settings to Auth protos
* Update generated protos
* Register: Apply DeviceUsage in lib/auth
* Register: Apply DeviceUsage in lib/web
* Login: Generate passwordless challenge
* Login: Allow passwordless authentication
* Wire passwordless in lib/web endpoints
* Make mocku2f passwordless setup a bit nicer
Before this change, second_factor types 'on' and 'optional' required U2F.
Starting at the next Teleport version, those settings require Webauthn by
default and treat U2F as optional.
Group second factor tests by second factor type, which is a more natural way to
think about configuration and cuts some repetition in testing.
* Simplify and extend second factor config tests
* Allow second_factor 'on' and 'optional' without U2F
* Make teleport.yaml parsing correctly reflect absent U2F
* Simplify uses of GetSecondFactor when applicable
We can take advantage of the IsSecondFactor*Allowed functions to do some
heavy lifting for us.
* Additional error handling
One endpoint is now responsible for creating/returning
MFA register challenges:
- Deprecates RotateUserTokenSecrets
- Deprecates GetSignupU2FRegisterRequest
Add Webauthn support to a few outstanding endpoints and RPCs.
* Refactor and add Webauthn support to ChangePassword
* Add explicit JSON tag to AuthenticateUserRequest.Webauthn
* Add Webauthn support to /webapi/users/password/token
* Add Webauthn to /webapi/ping
* Add default Webauthn device name to ChangeUserAuthentication
* Tidy Ping tests
* Define new rpc CompleteAccountRecovery, Step 3 in Account Recovery
after ApproveAccountReocvery. After success, users authn is changed
which allows a user to login with new credentials.
* Added a verifyMFARespAndAddDevice helper func to unify adding a
device through stream or by a user token.
Introduce new make targets to check and add license headers to files
("make lint-license" and "make fix-license"). License checking is now a part of
"make lint" as well.
Initial attempts used goheader, but it caused "make lint-go" to become about 9x
slower (if not more), plus it only targets go files. Google's addlicense is fast
enough and targets however many file types we want.
Existing files that were missing licenses got the header added, using the
current year as the license date.
* Introduce lint-license and fix-license make targets
* Ignore generated files
* Add license to go files
* Replace irregular licenses with standard copyright/license
* Add license to proto files
* Install addlicense in build.assets Dockerfile
* Add withSecrets bool parameter to identity service GetMFADevices
that removes secret (totp key) if true
* Add web handlers for getting devices for authenticated users
* Fix data race with RecoveryAttemptsCRUD test
* Add dice-ware library to create the recovery codes
* Add new recovery code "generated" and "used" events
* Implement create, upsert, and get recovery codes
* Create ChangeUserAuthentication grpc endpoint that is essentially a rework
of ChangePasswordWithToken that returns both a web session and
recovery codes (if user meets requirement)
* Add custom rate limit for grpc endpoint for ChangeUserAuthentication
* This commit also includes unused methods related to verifying recovery
code and recovery attempts that isn't utilized until later PRs
By specifying `device_attestation_cas` in `teleport.yaml`, admins can
restrict U2F device manufacturers. For example, specifying the yubico
attestation CA
(https://developers.yubico.com/U2F/yubico-u2f-ca-certs.txt), you can
restrict users to only yubikeys.
Example error when using the yubico CA and trying to register a Google
Titan key:
```
$ tsh mfa add --type u2f --name test && tsh mfa rm test
Tap any *registered* security key
Tap your *new* security key
ERROR: rpc error: code = InvalidArgument desc = U2F device attestation certificate is signed by "CN=Security Key,O=Google", but this cluster only accepts certificates from ["CN=Yubico U2F Root CA Serial 457200631"]; make sure you're using a U2F device from a trusted manufacturer
```
* mfa: audit events for adding/removing devices
Also add `With2FA` field to `UserLogin` when an MFA device is used
during login.
* Address review feedback
* mfa: reorganize audit event structure to be flat
* mfa: add new second_factor options "on" and "optional"
"on" means that 2FA is required for all users, either TOTP or U2F.
"optional" means that 2FA is supported for all users, but not required.
Only users with MFA devices registered will be prompted for 2FA on
login.
The login with both supported methods is using the same API as the U2F
login. It just now supports TOTP in addition. The API endpoints are
still named after "u2f", I'll rename those in a future PR (in a
backwards-compatible way).

Device uniqueness is checked on `GetUsers`, so if a duplicate name
appears, any operations touching users will fail.
Check device name uniqueness on `UpsertMFADevice` to avoid this.
Also, swap the OTP device creation order on user signup/reset: only
upsert the device after validating the token.
* Use fake clock consistently in units tests.
* Split web session management into two interfaces and implement them separately for clear separation
* Split session management into New/Validate to make it aparent where the sessions are created and where existing sessions are managed. Remove ttlmap in favor of a simple map and handle expirations
explicitly.
Add web session management to gRPC server for the cache.
* Reintroduce web sessions APIs under a getter interface.
* Add SubKind to WatchKind for gRPC and add conversions from/to protobuf. Fix web sessions unit tests.
* lib/web: create/insert session context in ValidateSession if the session has not yet been added to session cache.
lib/cache: add event filter for web session in auth cache.
lib/auth: propagate web session subkind in gRPC event.
* Add implicit migrations for legacy web session key path for queries.
* Integrate web token in lib/web
* Add a bearer token when upserting a web session
* Fix tests. Use fake clock wherever possible.
* Converge session cache handling in lib/web
* Clean up and add doc comments where necessary
* Use correct form of sessions/tokens controller for ServerWithRoles. Use fake time in web tests
* Converge the web sessions/tokens handling in lib/auth to match the old behavior w.r.t access checking (e.g. implicit handling of the local user identity).
* Use cached reads and waiters only when necessary. Query sessions/tokens using best-effort - first looking in the cache and falling back to a proxy client
* Properly propagate events about deletes for values with subkind.
* Update to retrofit changes after recent teleport API refactorings
* Update comment on removing legacy code to move the deadline to 7.x
* Do not close the resources on the session when it expires - this beats the purpose of this PR.
Also avoid a race between closing the cached clients and an existing reference to the session by letting the session linger for longer before removing it.
* Move web session/token request structs to the api client proto package
* Only set HTTP fs on the web handler if the UI is enabled
* Properly tear down web session test by releasing resources at the end. Fix the web UI assets configuration by removing DisableUI and instead use the presence of assets (HTTP file system) as an indicator that the web UI has been enabled.
* Decrease the expired session cache clean up threshold to 2m. Only log the expiration error message for errors other than not found
* Add test for terminal disconnect when using two proxies in HA mode
* mfa: implement management commands in tsh
New commands are:
- tsh mfa ls
- tsh mfa add
- tsh mfa rm
There are 2 problems intentionally left in this PR to keep it small:
1. TOTP registration requires user to manually enter the secret in the
app. When there's free time, I'll add platform-specific QR code display
to make this easier.
2. U2F authentication only checks one of the registered devices. This is
a limitation of the u2f-host binary, which can't check multiple devices
at once (even if spawning multiple u2f-host commands in parallel). In
the next PR, I'll replace u2f-host with a Go library that supports this.
* Address review feedback
Add 3 new RPCs for the auth server:
- AddMFADevice
- DeleteMFADevice
- GetMFADevices
All RPCs act on the user calling them, rather than specifying the user
in parameters. It's one less thing to validate and also prevents authz
bugs with one user messing with other user's MFA devices.
Add and Delete RPCs are streaming both ways, to allow MFA using an
existing device (prevents MFA bypass) and a challenge/response
registration used in U2F and TOTP. This approach makes the challenge
bound to the RPC connection and doesn't require backend storage.
Each user can now have multiple devices. This commit only changes the
backend structure to support it, the client and API haven't been updated
yet.
Also added a migration for existing MFA data on auth server startup.
This is just a refactoring without functional changes. Pull all the u2f
handling spread across multiple client and server packages into one
place.
Also clean up an obsolete vendored dependency, unrelated to this PR.
This commit introduces GRPC API for streaming sessions.
It adds structured events and sync streaming
that avoids storing events on disk.
You can find design in rfd/0002-streaming.md RFD.
User lockout check (auth.WithUserLock) would fail early in case a login
for unknown user was requested. The error is "user not found".
This can be used to enumerate the available Teleport users.
Even if the error message was more generic, timing can be trivially used
to infer whether a password was checked (bcrypt takes a while).
To avoid this, run the regular authentication flow regardless if the
user was found and return the generic "username or password invalid"
error.
Relatedly, fix a bug in the password verification. There's a timing
mitigation logic that replaces the expected password hash with a fake
one to perform a full bcrypt check. This fake has was for password
"barbaz".
If a login was requested for unknown user with password "barbaz", the
check would pass. Fortunately, the above user existence check in
auth.WithUserLock prevented this code path.

This commit introduced mutual TLS authentication
for auth server API server.
Auth server multiplexes HTTP over SSH - existing
protocol and HTTP over TLS - new protocol
on the same listening socket.
Nodes and users authenticate with 2.5.0 Teleport
using TLS mutual TLS except backwards-compatibility
cases.
