Michael SuchaczandEthan Dickson 0ef331fcd0 feat!: scope chat model override settings to organizations (#28442)
Moves chat model override settings from deployment scope to organization
scope, following the org-scoping of chat model configs in #28440.

Depends on #28440 (based on
`ethan/chat-models-availability-consolidation`).

Remote dogfood UAT passed on this change, including multi-organization
scenarios on a licensed deployment with real models.

## Problem

Chat model configs are now owned by organizations, but the override
settings that reference them stayed deployment-wide: admin
subagent/title/compaction overrides in `site_configs`, personal
overrides in `user_configs`, and the advisor model embedded in the
advisor runtime JSON. A single deployment-level override can only point
at one organization's model config, so overrides effectively worked for
the default organization only, and title generation had to soften its
hard-failure contract to tolerate unusable overrides.

## Fix

Admin overrides (general, explore, title generation, compaction,
advisor) and personal overrides (root, general, explore) become
organization-scoped rows in two new typed tables,
`chat_organization_model_overrides` and `chat_user_model_overrides`.
Composite foreign keys on `(organization_id, model_config_id)` make
cross-organization model references unrepresentable. The migration
deletes the legacy serialized `site_configs`/`user_configs` override
keys instead of migrating them; admins and users re-select models in the
new organization-scoped settings.

New endpoints live under
`/api/experimental/organizations/{organization}/chats/model-overrides`
(admin defaults) and
`/api/experimental/organizations/{organization}/members/{user}/chats/model-overrides`
(personal overrides); the legacy deployment-level routes are removed.
chatd resolves overrides via the chat's organization, restoring the
hard-failure contract for configured-but-unusable title generation
overrides. The deployment-level `AllowUsers` switch and advisor runtime
limits stay deployment-scoped.

The Coder Agents settings UI gains a per-organization "Defaults &
overrides" page under AI Settings > Models, and the personal overrides
page gains an organization selector for users in multiple organizations.
Advisor telemetry now reports per-organization override rows.

**BREAKING CHANGE**: Existing deployment-level overrides are dropped,
not migrated. Every organization starts with no overrides after upgrade,
and model selections must be re-applied in the new settings. The legacy
deployment-level override endpoints are removed.

Closes https://linear.app/coder/issue/CODAGT-872

Ethan f32592ec6b feat!: scope chat model configs to organizations (#27955)
## Summary

Scope chat model configurations and runtime model resolution to
organizations. Each model configuration now belongs to exactly one
organization, each organization can have its own default model, and
Chatd only uses models that belong to the chat's organization.

Depends on #27968.

## Problem

Chat model configurations are currently deployment-wide even though
chats belong to organizations. A default model, explicitly selected
model, or configured model override can therefore reference the same
model configuration from every organization. This prevents model
catalogs and defaults from being isolated by organization and allows a
chat to retain or select a model that its organization does not own.

Existing model configurations also have no organization ownership or
organization-scoped ACL data, and the database enforces a single live
default across the entire deployment.

## Fix

Add required organization ownership and ACL storage to chat model
configurations. The migration assigns every existing configuration to
the default organization, seeds organization-wide read access, and
replaces the deployment-wide default constraint with a per-organization
constraint.

Scope Chatd lookup, admission, fallback, and queue-promotion behavior to
the chat's organization:

- New chats use the usable default model from their organization.
- Explicit model selections from another organization are rejected.
- Deployment or personal overrides that point to a foreign model are not
used for the chat.
- Historical cross-organization model references remain unchanged in the
database, but runtime generation falls back to a usable local default.
- Queue promotion resolves unavailable, disabled, missing, or foreign
stored models to the usable local default and fails when no usable local
default exists.

The existing model configuration management and availability routes
remain compatibility routes for the default organization in this layer.
A later layer in the stack adds organization-scoped management routes
and updates clients to use them.

## Breaking change

This changes chat model behavior from deployment-wide to
organization-scoped. Existing configurations are migrated only to the
default organization; they are not copied into every organization.

As a result:

- A non-default organization no longer inherits the deployment's
existing default model.
- Creating a chat in an organization without a usable local default
fails with `400: No default chat model config is configured.`
- Explicitly selecting a configuration owned by another organization
fails with `400: Model config does not belong to the specified
organization.`
- Existing chats whose stored model belongs to another organization can
generate only if a usable local default is available; otherwise
generation fails.

Deployments using Agents in non-default organizations must configure a
usable default chat model separately for each organization after the
organization-scoped management layers in this stack are available.

Michael Suchacz 9168dbf4d3 refactor(coderd/x/chatd): unify LLM model-call construction behind a resolver (#28145)
Centralizes every LLM client build in chatd behind one resolver and
makes all model calls behave the same, instead of preserving per-flow
quirks.

## Why

`chatd` built LLM clients in five places (standard turn, compaction
override, quickgen, title override, advisor), each repeating config
parsing, route resolution, client construction, and debug wrapping with
slightly different behavior. An earlier iteration of this PR centralized
construction but preserved every historical quirk behind
purpose-specific spec constructors and policy flags. Review concluded
the quirks themselves were the problem.

## What changed

- `Server.resolveModelCall` (`modelcall.go`) is the single pipeline from
a `modelCallSpec` to a ready client plus call metadata. Callers build
spec literals inline; the only spec fields are data: model source (chat
config, explicit config row, or fixed provider/model pair for computer
use), requested reasoning effort, chatd-scoped routing, and build
options.
- Uniform behavior for every call:
- Provider options are always derived. Whole-chat summaries, turn status
labels, and chat-model compaction summaries previously sent none; they
now follow the config like everything else.
- `MaxOutputTokens` always defaults to 32k when the config leaves it
unset. The compaction summary call nulls the cap after copying the
template because it is non-streaming and the Anthropic SDK rejects
non-streaming requests whose cap implies a completion over ten minutes.
- Debug recording always wraps the client when chat debug is enabled,
labeled with the resolved provider/model. The debug-rebuild paths
(`manualTitleDebugSpec`, `quickgenDebugSpec`) are deleted; debug helpers
now only create and finalize run records, since run association flows
through the generate context, not the model.
- Clients are always constructed with the configured model string and
unmutated route, so AI Gateway validation sees the name exactly as
configured. The resolved identity feeds metadata, logs, and debug labels
only.
- `resolvedModelCall.newCall` / `newObjectCall` are the only production
constructors of `fantasy.Call` / `fantasy.ObjectCall`; object calls now
carry the config's sampling parameters.
- Net: -240 lines.

## Validation

- Full `./coderd/x/chatd/...` suite green (PostgreSQL-backed).
- Red-green toggles verified for the three key unifications (option
derivation, token default, summary cap removal).
- ARCHITECTURE.md: prose the refactor made stale is deleted; no new
resolver documentation is added.

Michael SuchaczandMathias Fredriksson 443e3b9b80 feat!: org-scope MCP server configs with RBAC (#27942)
Moves `mcp_server_configs` from deployment scope to organization scope
so each organization fully controls the MCP servers its members can use
with Coder Agents.

## Summary

- Migration: adds `organization_id` (NOT NULL, FK) and keeps existing
rows as the default organization's originals with credentials intact.
Other organizations start with no MCP servers and configure their own;
nothing is copied across organizations. Chats outside the default
organization keep any now-cross-organization `mcp_server_ids` entries;
the runtime already ignores IDs that do not resolve in the chat's
organization, so no data rewrite is needed. Slug uniqueness becomes
`(organization_id, slug)`.
- RBAC: new org-scoped `ResourceMCPServerConfig` with regosql converter
and `GetAuthorizedMCPServerConfigs`; org admins get in-org CRUD, org
members get read (replaced by ACL evaluation in the follow-up ACL PR in
this stack).
- API: all config routes nest under the organization, matching
templates: `POST|GET
/api/experimental/organizations/{organization}/mcp-servers` and
`GET|PATCH|DELETE .../mcp-servers/{mcpserverconfig}` (plus
`oauth2/connect`), resolved by a read-only param middleware that
conceals read-denied and cross-organization access as 404. Two routes
stay on the frozen `/api/experimental/mcp/servers/{mcpServer}` block:
the OAuth2 callback (the redirect URI baked into existing AS-side client
registrations) and `oauth2/disconnect`, which must remain reachable by
users removed from the organization so they can still revoke their token
grant.
- Chat runtime: selection validation and generation resolve configs
strictly by IDs, enabled state, and the chat's organization in SQL;
requested duplicates are normalized; invalid or cross-org IDs are
rejected with the precise ID list. IDs already persisted on a chat are
exempt from message-time rejection so disabling a selected server never
blocks sends; generation skips servers that are no longer usable.
- Frontend: API layer and admin settings pages target the new endpoints.
The admin page manages the default organization's servers; the org
picker is tracked separately (CODAGT-714).

- Security hardening from review: OAuth user grants are additionally
bound to `oauth2_revocation_url` (changing it invalidates grants, and a
racing OAuth callback gets 409 instead of recreating a grant).
Stack-wide SSRF protection for MCP config-directed traffic was split
into its own PR at the top of this stack (#28242) to keep this diff
reviewable; this PR keeps main's existing discovery IP-range guard.
OAuth2 auto-discovery now completes before the config row is inserted: a
failed discovery persists nothing, and there is no provisional row that
concurrent updates could race against.

Two follow-up PRs in this stack were split out to keep this diff
reviewable: #28064 completes the swagger annotations for the moved
routes (main already ships these experimental MCP handlers unannotated),
and #28065 carries hardening fixes and regression pins on top of the
cutover.

- Force On enforcement (landed on main mid-review) is org-scoped: the
forced set is read per chat organization
(`GetForcedMCPServerConfigsByOrganization`), so another organization's
`force_on` server never attaches to a chat.

## Breaking changes (experimental API)

The MCP server config endpoints move from the deployment-scoped
`/api/experimental/mcp/servers` block to organization-nested paths:
`POST|GET /api/experimental/organizations/{organization}/mcp-servers`
and `GET|PATCH|DELETE
/api/experimental/organizations/{organization}/mcp-servers/{mcpserverconfig}`
(plus `oauth2/connect`). The old paths are removed, so API consumers
must supply an organization. Two routes intentionally stay on the frozen
`/api/experimental/mcp/servers/{mcpServer}` block: the OAuth2 callback
(its redirect URI is baked into existing AS-side client registrations)
and `oauth2/disconnect` (must remain reachable by users removed from the
organization). These endpoints are under `/api/experimental`, so no
deprecation window is provided.

## Rolling upgrades

During a rolling deploy, an old replica creating an MCP config can fail
the new `NOT NULL organization_id` constraint until it is upgraded
(reads are unaffected: old binaries' generated queries select their own
column lists). This matches the repo's existing precedent for additive
NOT NULL migrations (000562) and affects only the admin config-create
path in the upgrade window.

Upgrades are expected to run in scheduled maintenance downtime with the
database locked during migration, so the migration ships no
rolling-upgrade compatibility machinery. The down migration deletes
organization-created configs (their chat references are cleaned by the
000510 delete trigger) and restores deployment-wide slug uniqueness.

Part of the MCP org-separation stack (CODAGT-711 -> CODAGT-717 audit ->
CODAGT-712 ACLs -> CODAGT-806 token RBAC).

Closes https://linear.app/codercom/issue/CODAGT-711

UAT: validated end to end on a two-org dogfood deployment, including a
real pre-migration to post-migration upgrade, cross-org isolation
(404s), same-slug-two-orgs, chat selection gating, and a live MCP tool
call through the org-scoped generation path. The migration was later
revised to keep existing rows in the default organization only (no
per-organization copies); that revision is covered by the migration test
suite.

Michael Suchacz 119f2b1dd9 feat: limit concurrent chat agents with pooled admission (#27902)
Limits concurrent chat generation on capped deployments to 5 root chats
and 10 delegated subagent chats. The pools are deployment-wide and
independent, so delegated work can continue while root capacity is full.

The default caps live in AGPL code. Enterprise contributes only a
licensing unlock, so unlicensed deployments stay capped and cannot fail
open. Licensed deployments are uncapped while Agent Hours usage stays
below an explicit hard limit. Deployments without a hard limit remain
uncapped, and reaching the Agent Hours allocation only triggers
warnings.

Admission happens before a worker takes chat ownership. Capped
deployments serialize admission across replicas with a
transaction-scoped advisory lock and derive active and queued state from
current ownership plus fresh runner heartbeats, rather than persisted
queue markers or per-replica state. The acquisition query returns a
bounded, pool-interleaved candidate set instead of ranking the whole
backlog; a migration replaces the acquisition index with a pool-aware
one. Refused chats stay running but unowned, and interrupt requests
bypass admission so users can stop queued or over-cap chats.

The single-chat API derives `queued_for_capacity` from live pool state;
list endpoints do not report it. The UI polls that value every 5 seconds
while a chat is running and shows a callout when the chat is waiting for
capacity.

Updates the administrator documentation and deployment-wide Prometheus
gauges for active and queued agents. Replica-level values must be
aggregated with `max`, not `sum`.

Michael Suchacz 4b9880afa6 feat: add --chat-hook-allow-insecure to allow plain HTTP chat hook URLs (#27896)
Adds a hidden `--chat-hook-allow-insecure` /
`CODER_CHAT_HOOK_ALLOW_INSECURE` deployment option (default `false`)
that allows the chat lifecycle hook URL to use plain HTTP for any host.

The HTTPS requirement is enforced at two points, and the flag relaxes
both: `DeploymentValues.Validate()` rejects `http` hook URLs at startup,
and the hook dispatcher's `validateHookURL` allows `http` only for
loopback hosts. With the flag set, any-host `http` is accepted; the
host, fragment/userinfo, secret, and timeout checks are unchanged, and
non-http(s) schemes still fail. This removes the need for an HTTPS
reverse proxy when testing a hook consumer on a trusted network.

Following security review feedback, the flag description and docs state
that plain HTTP lets an on-path attacker forge hook responses (which
control agent execution), and `coder server` logs a startup warning
(with a redacted hook URL) when hooks run over plain HTTP.

Docs, generated API types, and the server config golden are updated
accordingly.

Ethan 1702bbb816 test(coderd/x/chatd): accept query cancellation in subagent wait (#27818)
Closes CODAGT-877
Closes https://github.com/coder/internal/issues/1437

The linked flake happens because the context deadline can be observed as
`context.DeadlineExceeded`, or as a PostgreSQL query cancellation when a
database call is in flight. The fix is just to assert that the deadline
expired and the returned error is a recognised query cancellation,
rather than depending on which layer notices it first.

Michael Suchacz b5c9e8e471 refactor(coderd/x/chatd): carry the resolved OpenAI transport on a model wrapper (#27703)
Stacked on #27683.

The OpenAI wire format is decided when the client is built, then thrown
away, so downstream sites recompute it from `(provider, modelID,
override)`. Any disagreement fails silently: the SDK type-asserts the
concrete provider options struct and discards every OpenAI option, and
text attachments are dropped because Responses natively accepts only
images and PDFs.

This adds `chatprovider.Model`, which pairs a fantasy client with the
transport resolved from that client's own identity. Its fields are
unexported and only the constructor sets the transport, deriving it from
the client, so no caller can pick a transport that disagrees with the
client it wraps. `chatopenai.Transport`'s zero value is invalid and
panics when read rather than defaulting to a wire format, following the
existing precedent for construction invariants.

`Model` is threaded through construction, the resolve paths, and the
four struct fields that store a model for later request preparation.
Terminal call sites keep taking `fantasy.LanguageModel` and receive
`LanguageModel()`, which avoids a new package edge from `chatloop` and
`chatadvisor` into `chatprovider`.

No decisions move yet. The consumers still recompute the transport, and
`UsesResponsesAPI` now delegates to `TransportFor` so the two agree by
construction. #27704 makes the consumers read it from the model.

Michael Suchacz c17bed25e0 feat: wire chat lifecycle hooks into chatd (#27429)
Wires chat lifecycle hooks into chatd, gated by the
`agent-lifecycle-hooks` experiment. Part of the lifecycle hooks stack
(#27401, #27428, #27430). See `docs/admin/setup/chat-lifecycle-hooks.md`
for the consumer-facing contract.

## Summary

When a hook URL is configured, chatd dispatches `session_start`,
`user_prompt_submit`, `pre_tool_use`, `post_tool_use`, `pre_compact`,
`post_compact`, and `stop` events to the consumer and applies its
responses.

## Design

- **Stateless**: Coder stores no hook dispatch or decision state.
Delivery is at least once; consumers deduplicate on stable payload
identifiers (chat ID, event type, tool-use ID) and answer duplicates
with the same decision.
- **Admission-time prompt effects**: `user_prompt_submit` dispatches
exactly once per submission (create, send, queue, edit, subagent spawn)
and folds its effects into the stored prompt as typed message parts:
original-or-overridden user parts, then model-only `hook-context`, then
a user-visible `hook-notice`. Hook context is stripped from every
client-facing conversion; hook notices are excluded from model prompts.
The server rejects hook parts in client-submitted content.
- **Tool gating**: `pre_tool_use` allow can override tool input; deny
becomes a synthetic denied tool result, with any returned model context
persisted as a model-only transcript row so it never reaches clients.
The denial text identifies an external policy (the deployment's
lifecycle hook) as the source and marks the decision as persistent, so
the model explains the denial instead of retrying it or misreporting it
as an infrastructure failure.
- **Fail closed**: a dispatch failure rejects the triggering request or
moves the chat to the error state in the same transaction as the
affected step, so a runnable state is never published with unapproved
content.
- **Admission before persistence**: `pre_tool_use` is dispatched for the
calls the model produced, before the assistant message is stored. See
"Staged tool admission" below.
- **Fresh dispatch per tool call**: every non-provider-executed tool
call is decided by its own `pre_tool_use` dispatch; Coder never reuses
an earlier decision on the consumer's behalf. Retries re-dispatch the
same logical event.

## Structure

All hook dispatch flows through one seam: entry points build a
`chathooks.Chat` (chat identity) and a `chathooks.Message` (event
details) and call `Trigger.Trigger`, the only component that talks to
the dispatcher. The integration lives in the `coderd/x/chatd/chathooks`
subpackage, split by responsibility:

- `trigger.go`: the trigger seam; builds the wire envelope per event,
normalizes deny into a typed error, and holds the package's single
enabled-check.
- `effects.go`: pure conversion of hook results into transcript rows and
prompt parts.
- `errors.go`: failure classification (dispatch error messages, denial
mapping, tool-result dispatch-failure scanning).
- `tooluse.go`: the tool-call gate (`pre_tool_use` preflight,
`post_tool_use` payloads, applying admitted input to the step).

Server-bound glue stays in `coderd/x/chatd/hook_server.go`: the
chat-parking dispatch error handlers, the step-commit row insertion
wrappers, and the dynamic post-tool-use state loader, which depends on
chatd validation types.

This PR adopts the `codersdk/x/agenthooks` and
`coderd/x/agenthooks/dispatch` import paths introduced at the tip of
#27401; intermediate commits still reference the pre-move paths and are
not individually buildable.

## Staged tool admission

`pre_tool_use` originally ran at tool execution time, which is after the
assistant message carrying the tool call was already committed. An
`input_override` therefore had to rewrite stored message content in
place. @hugodutka pointed out that chatd treats message content as
immutable, and that the rewrite was a shortcut rather than a
requirement.

It was also a correctness problem in its own right: the rewrite only
updated the database, so the transcript could show one input while a
different one had executed.

The hook now runs before the step is persisted:

```text
provider stream ends (tool calls complete, in memory)
  -> pre_tool_use dispatch per call
  -> ONE transaction: assistant row with admitted inputs, synthetic denials, hook rows
  -> execute
```

The step is inserted once, carrying the input the tool runs with.
`UpdateChatMessageContentByID` and `Tx.UpdateMessageContent` are deleted
from #27428, so message content stays immutable.

Two consequences, both intentional:

- **Clients converge rather than wait.** Tool-call parts still stream
live, so a rewritten call briefly shows the model's proposed input
before the committed message replaces it. The chat store already clears
stream state when an assistant message arrives, so the stored input wins
with no frontend change and no added latency before tool cards appear.
- **A call already in history was already admitted.** Execution consumes
the stored input instead of dispatching a second decision, which keeps
one dispatch and one set of hook effects per call. A consumer policy
change between admission and execution applies to later calls, not to
calls already admitted.

The per-chat debug endpoint still records the provider's original tool
input. Its purpose is to report provider behavior, and it requires an
explicit per-chat debug flag; the invariant here covers the transcript.

## Configuration

Adds `chat-hook-url`, `chat-hook-secret`, `chat-hook-timeout`, and
`chat-hook-enabled` deployment options with startup validation. The
flags are hidden from `coder server --help` while the feature is
experimental; the setup guide documents them.

## Tool input validation

Built-in tool arguments reach a consumer as raw JSON with key spelling
preserved, but the tools decode those bytes with Go, which matches
struct fields case-insensitively and keeps the last match. A policy
reading `path` could therefore authorize one value while the tool
executed another, and a lone case variant such as `{"PATH":"/secret"}`
was invisible to a policy checking for `path`.

Coder now rejects a built-in tool call whose input repeats a key or
spells a schema property with different capitalization, before the
`pre_tool_use` dispatch, so a consumer is never asked to authorize bytes
whose meaning depends on the reader. Rejected calls produce an error
result the model can retry; unambiguous calls in the same batch still
run. A consumer-authored `input_override` is rechecked after the
dispatch and fails the turn closed, because the model cannot correct it.
Dynamic and MCP inputs are excluded because the client and the workspace
agent execute those calls rather than coderd.

Two paths needed more than a schema check. Execution resolves a
deprecated tool name to its canonical tool, so validation resolves
aliases first. The `edit_files` decoder also reads `search` and
`replace`, which its schema does not advertise, so those aliases are now
matched exactly and their case variants ignored.

A hook denial now returns a structured 403 carrying `kind:
"hook_denied"`, mirroring the dispatch-failure response that already
carries its own kind. Without it a client cannot tell a policy decision
apart from a generic failure, and the chat UI titled a denial "Request
failed". Adding a kind needs no migration: `ChatErrorKind` is persisted
only inside the JSONB `chats.last_error` column, whose decoder accepts
unknown kinds.

The hook docs also correct the tool-input convergence window. A batch
dispatches sequentially before the assistant row commits, so the
original input stays visible for a span that scales with the number of
tool calls in the step rather than a single hook timeout.

Michael Suchacz 4ed6fcced7 refactor(coderd): stop storing chat gateway key IDs and drop the columns (#27171)
> Mux is working on behalf of Mike.

## Summary

Stop reading and writing the legacy `api_key_id` columns on chat
messages and queued messages, and drop the columns in the same PR.
Runtime AI Gateway attribution continues to use the per-user synthetic
key introduced by #27170.

With the columns gone, `sqlc` generates `database.ChatMessage` and
`database.ChatQueuedMessage` without `api_key_id`, so no transitional
query scaffolding is needed.

Migration `000548` drops the `api_key_id` columns. #27170 already
removed their foreign keys, so the down migration re-adds nullable text
columns without constraints. Previous column values cannot be restored.

Also moves the model config validation in `CreateChat` above the
message-building work so a disabled or invalid model fails fast. On main
this mattered more: the old ordering minted a synthetic API key before
rejecting the request.

Deploy note: replicas still running the previous release write
`api_key_id` on insert, so chat message inserts on old replicas fail
during the rolling window after the column drop. This was previously
split across two PRs to avoid that window; per review feedback the split
added more churn than it was worth for an experimental surface.

Depends on #27170 (merged).

Michael Suchacz 997b5d0843 feat: add synthetic gateway keys (#27170)
> Mux is working on behalf of Mike.

## Summary

Add a per-user synthetic API key for chatd AI Gateway attribution. Chatd
resolves the key from the chat owner, extends it before expiry, and
discards the generated bearer token so the key is never a usable
credential.

There is no mapping table. The key is resolved from `api_keys` by a
deterministic token name (`chatd_<owner_id>_session_token`), mirroring
the provisionerd session token model, with three deltas that chatd
needs:

- **Login type guard**: token names are unvalidated user input, so a
user can create a bearer token with the colliding name. The lookup
excludes `login_type = 'token'` rows, so chatd never picks up (or
extends) a real user token. Synthetic keys are minted with the owner's
login type, which is never `token`.
- **In-place expiry extension instead of delete-and-reinsert**: chat
generations have no stop boundary, and an in-flight generation may have
already delegated the current key ID to aibridged. Extending
`expires_at` keeps the key ID stable forever.
- **Advisory-lock mint**: the unique index on token names is partial
(`WHERE login_type = 'token'`), so nothing DB-enforces uniqueness for
synthetic keys. A per-user advisory lock serializes concurrent mints.

Keys carry a minimal scope (`api_key:read`) as defense in depth; the
delegated gateway path never evaluates scopes and the secret is
discarded at mint.

Migration 000544 removes the foreign keys from the legacy message and
queue `api_key_id` columns while chatd continues stamping them for
rolling compatibility. Stale IDs are tolerated because routing uses
`chats.owner_id`. Individual key deletion, delete-all, and password
reset remove the key without changing chat history or queue versions,
and the next lookup remints it. Suspension does not delete the key;
delegated gateway authorization rejects inactive users at request time.

Ethan 1497ba14fe refactor: type computer use provider as an enum (#27086)
The deployment-wide computer use provider was passed around as a bare `string` on the `codersdk` wire structs, in `chattool`, and in the generated TypeScript, and its valid values (`anthropic`, `openai`) were never exposed as a `codersdk` enum. That's out of step with our other chat settings (`ChatDebugRunKind`, `ChatUsageLimitPeriod`), which already define enums with `Valid()` and an `All<Name>s` slice, and it left the allowed values duplicated as literals with no typed contract for clients.

This adds `codersdk.ChatComputerUseProvider` as the single source of truth and routes the API boundary, `chattool`, `chatd`, and the generated TypeScript through it. The DB layer and chattool's internal model-provider routing stay `string` on purpose, since they handle untrusted or fantasy-model values that just happen to share the names.

Cian Johnston 4936ff9808 refactor: deprecate AIGatewayRoutingEnabled, remove direct chat routing (#26862)
This PR removes the now-dead direct-routing code:

- Deletes the direct routing implementation.
- Collapses the resolvedModelRoute discriminated union into aiGatewayModelRoute.
- Removes the dead providerKeys cascade.
- Deletes the preferredShortTextCandidates quickgen function.
- Simplifies the advisor override error handling.
- Deprecates the AIGatewayRoutingEnabled deployment option. It is now a no-op so as to not break existing deployments on upgrade.

Once direct routing was gone, the AI Gateway became mandatory for chat, which surfaced gaps in how the product behaves with the gateway disabled:

- Exposes ai-gateway-enabled to the frontend via embedded page metadata.
- Disables the chat composer via the existing AgentSetupNotice when the gateway is disabled, for both new and existing chats.
- Fixes nil/typed-nil chatDaemon panics on startup and shutdown when gateway is disabled.
- Fixes chat WebSocket from retrying the still-gated stream endpoint forever when the gateway is disabled.

Mathias Fredriksson 047c47495b refactor: drop chat_model_configs provider column (#26877)
The provider type already lives authoritatively in ai_providers.type,
reachable on every active row through ai_provider_id, which the
chat_model_configs_ai_provider_required_when_active CHECK makes
mandatory. The stored provider string was a denormalized copy the system
kept in sync with a startup backfill and no longer needs.

Every surface now derives provider type from the linked ai_providers
row. Telemetry is the one exception: it keeps emitting provider, now
sourced from ai_providers.type via a JOIN, so the BigQuery column and the
Nexus dashboards that read it are unaffected. The experimental HTTP/SDK
response drops provider and makes ai_provider_id required, since those
endpoints return only active configs; consumers resolve provider type
from ai_provider_id and the AI providers listing.

This ships in a single release with no compatibility window: production
reads the table via SELECT *, so a pre-drop binary fails config reads the
moment the column is gone. Operators must scale to zero before upgrading,
and there is no rollback.

Mathias Fredriksson 59fcc9c0ad feat: improve sub-agent orchestration tools (#26673)
Tool errors caused orchestrators to abandon spawned agents. Bare error
responses and the close_agent name framed delegation as one-shot: one
transient failure or timeout ended the work, and the orchestrator had no
way to recover or reuse agents.

Renames close_agent to interrupt_agent with a hidden backward-compatible
alias. wait_agent and message_agent return structured payloads instead
of bare errors, so the orchestrator can retry after a timeout, recover
from an error status, or redirect an idle agent. Adds list_agents so
orchestrators can rediscover spawned agents. Adds root-only
orchestration guidance for error recovery.

Hugo Dutka 684d904c00 fix(coderd/x/chatd): resolve inflight race (#26460)
Using `WaitGroup.Go` must be synchronized with `WaitGroup.Wait`
according to [go docs](https://pkg.go.dev/sync#WaitGroup.Go):

> If the WaitGroup is empty, Go must happen before a
[WaitGroup.Wait](https://pkg.go.dev/sync#WaitGroup.Wait).

There were a couple of places in chatd that violated this principle.
This was caught as a data race in
https://github.com/coder/internal/issues/1599. This PR ensures that all
functions that spawn inflight goroutines synchronize with each other.

I also noticed that inflight goroutines may be spawned after the server
is closed, which was surprising and looked like a bug. This PR therefore
also introduces a mechanism that disallows spawning inflight goroutines
after the server is closed, and ensures that any code that tries doing
it logs an error.

Closes https://github.com/coder/internal/issues/1599.

only opt into background execution when they need a real worker.

Use the passive server path in `TestAwaitSubagentCompletion` for the
state-driven subtests, keep `ContextCanceled` explicitly active for real
provider cancellation coverage, and keep the fail-fast default AI
provider base URL so accidental provider calls still fail immediately.

Danny Kopping a1330e3a8c refactor: rename Ai* database identifiers to AI* (AIGOV-369) (#26327)
Adds `ai` to sqlc's `gen.go.initialisms` in `coderd/database/sqlc.yaml`
so the generated DB code follows Go's initialism convention. Adds the
matching `ai` -> `AI` case to the dbgen PascalCase helper
(`scripts/dbgen/main.go`) so the corresponding `dbmem` / mock
identifiers stay in sync. `make gen` regenerates the rest; hand-written
call sites that consume DB-generated identifiers
(`enterprise/audit/table.go`, `coderd/database/modelmethods.go`,
`enterprise/coderd/aigatewaykeys.go`, `coderd/database/dbauthz/*`, etc.)
are updated to match.

Scope is deliberately limited to the database layer:

- `coderd/rbac/*` (resource and scope generators) is untouched —
`ResourceAi*` / `ScopeAi*` constants stay on main's casing.
- `codersdk/*` (Go SDK) is untouched — `codersdk.ResourceAi*` /
`codersdk.APIKeyScopeAi*` constants stay on main's casing, so external
Go SDK consumers see no source-level break.
- `Aibridge*` identifiers (one SQL token `aibridge`, not `ai_bridge`)
are out of scope.

On-the-wire values are unchanged: enum strings, RBAC resource type
strings, API key scope strings, and JSON tags all stay the same. The
HTTP/JSON surface is unaffected.

Michael Suchacz 8b1705eb65 feat: route chatd provider traffic through aibridge (#25629)
## Summary

Routes chatd model calls backed by concrete AI Provider rows through the
in-process aibridge transport by default, with deployment options to use
direct provider routing when AI Gateway is disabled or chat AI Gateway
routing is disabled.

- Splits model routing into common, direct provider, and AI Gateway
paths behind a single deployment-mode entry point.
- Builds chatd models through explicit request, route, and options data.
Active API key attribution is passed explicitly instead of being hidden
inside generic model construction.
- For AI Gateway BYOK routes, resolves the user's provider key in chatd,
forwards it through provider-specific auth headers, and sets
`X-Coder-AI-Governance-Token` to the `delegated` marker so aibridge
preserves those headers while still stripping Coder-specific metadata.
- Keeps central provider credentials and deployment fallback credentials
out of forwarded provider auth headers, so AI Gateway central policy
remains authoritative.
- Redacts delegated provider auth from default string formatting to
avoid accidental plaintext logging of user BYOK credentials.
- Covers selected chat models, advisor overrides, title and quickgen
paths, subagent overrides, computer use model selection, and an
integration-style chat turn through the aibridge transport path.
- Persists initiating API key IDs on chat and queued user messages,
including subagent child messages, and fails closed for AI
Gateway-routed model builds without an active key.
- Removes unused `api_key_id` indexes while keeping the persistence
columns and foreign keys.
- Keeps the deployment option available through config and env parsing,
but hides it from CLI help and generated docs.
- Stabilizes the subagent poll fallback test so background CreateChat
processing cannot win the state transition under slower CI environments.

Michael Suchacz 60779ad2ec test(coderd/x/chatd): stop waking acquireLoop in TestResolveExploreToolSnapshot (#25129)
Fixes [CODAGT-367](https://linear.app/codercom/issue/CODAGT-367).

`TestResolveExploreToolSnapshot/*` flaked on CI (Linux and Windows) with
`context deadline exceeded` on the `GetMCPServerConfigsByIDs` call
inside `resolveExploreToolSnapshot`.

Each test setup called `server.CreateChat` twice with `MCPServerIDs` set
to fake `.example.com` URLs. `CreateChat` marks the chat pending and
calls `signalWake`, which causes the chatd background `acquireLoop` to
pick the chat up. That goroutine then dialed the fake MCP URLs
(NXDOMAIN, slower on Windows) and made an OpenAI request with the dbgen
default test key (401). Under CI load, that activity racing the 4
parallel subtests' `GetMCPServerConfigsByIDs` calls was enough to exceed
the 25s test context deadline. The failure logs in the issue showed both
side effects firing in the same job.

`resolveExploreToolSnapshot` only reads `ID`, `MCPServerIDs`,
`PlanMode`, `ParentChatID`, and `Mode` off the parent argument, so the
chats do not need to be persisted. Build them as in-memory
`database.Chat` values instead. The MCP server configs remain in the DB
because the function still queries them via `GetMCPServerConfigsByIDs`.

Verified locally with `go test ./coderd/x/chatd -run
TestResolveExploreToolSnapshot -count=100 -race` (passes, ~5s total) and
the surrounding `TestResolve*` / `TestCreateChildSubagentChat*` /
`TestSpawnAgent_Explore*` tests.

Ethan 063c06ca5f test: prevent expired contexts in chatd parallel subtests (#25107)
Parallel subtests in `coderd/x/chatd` reused a parent test context with
a `testutil.WaitLong` deadline, so the context could expire before a
subtest was scheduled under load. That made the subagent lifecycle tools
return plain-text context errors instead of the expected JSON payload,
causing flaky JSON unmarshal failures.

Create fresh `chatdTestContext` values inside the affected parallel
subtests and add `chatdTestContext` to the `paralleltestctx` custom
function list so this pattern is caught by `make lint`.

Ethan 46a60e6d5d refactor: move chat error kinds into codersdk (#24955)
Moves the chat error kind taxonomy from `coderd/x/chatd/chaterror` into
`codersdk.ChatErrorKind` and types `ChatError.Kind` /
`ChatStreamRetry.Kind` so generated TypeScript exposes an SDK-owned
union, including `usage_limit`. Backend chat classification now
references the SDK constants directly while preserving the existing JSON
string values.

Keeps chat usage-limit admission failures on their existing 409 response
shape. The frontend maps structured usage-limit responses to the
SDK-owned `usage_limit` kind, uses generated `TypesGen.ChatErrorKind`
directly, and removes the local string union and alias.

Ethan 4751416b29 fix!: persist structured chat errors (#24919)
**Breaking change for changelog:**

> `codersdk.Chat.last_error` now returns a structured `ChatError` object
(`{message, kind, provider, retryable, status_code, detail}`) instead of
a plain string. The chats API is experimental
(`/api/experimental/chats`), so this ships without a deprecation cycle;
consumers reading `chat.last_error` as a string must update to read
`chat.last_error.message`. SDK/generated TypeScript terminal error
payloads now use the single `ChatError` type; the live stream error
payload type is renamed from `ChatStreamError` to `ChatError`.

Persisted chat errors now carry the same provider-specific detail (kind,
provider, retryable, HTTP status, optional detail) as the live stream,
so refreshing a failed chat rehydrates with the full structured error
instead of a one-line headline.

Existing rows are migrated in place: legacy text errors are wrapped into
`{message, kind: "generic"}` so already-errored chats still render, and
rows with `last_error IS NULL` stay NULL. Internally, persisted fallback
decoding now reuses the existing `chaterror.KindGeneric` constant, with
no JSON value change.

Michael Suchacz 0bb09935bc feat: add computer-use provider selection for AI agents (#24772)
Adds a deployment-wide setting to select the computer-use provider
(Anthropic or OpenAI) for AI agents, plus the OpenAI computer-use runner
needed to honor that selection.

The setting is stored in `site_configs` under
`agents_computer_use_provider`, defaults to Anthropic when unset, and is
exposed via experimental GET/PUT endpoints under
`/api/experimental/chats/config/computer-use-provider`. The chatd
computer-use tool now dispatches to either `runAnthropicComputerUse` or
`runOpenAIComputerUse` based on the resolved provider, with
provider-specific result metadata for OpenAI screenshots.

Frontend adds a provider dropdown to the Agents Experiments settings
page nested under the virtual desktop toggle, with disabled state
handling while virtual desktop is off and skeleton loaders while config
queries are in flight.

Hugo and Codex review follow-up:
- Uses shared provider validation and clearer computer-use constant
names.
- Removes stale OpenAI pending-safety-checks commentary.
- Documents why provider result metadata is needed for OpenAI
screenshots.
- Keeps the computer-use subagent visible when provider credentials are
missing, then returns a clear spawn-time configuration error.
- Uses OpenAI's recommended 1600x900 screenshot geometry to preserve the
native 16:9 aspect ratio.
- Moves OpenAI-specific computer-use helpers into
`coderd/x/chatd/chatopenai/computeruse` after rebasing onto the provider
package refactor in `main`.
- Converts OpenAI pixel scroll deltas to Coder desktop wheel-click
amounts.
- Preserves OpenAI pointer modifiers with key down/up desktop actions
and rejects unsupported non-left double-click buttons explicitly.
- Maps OpenAI back/forward side-button clicks to browser navigation key
actions.
- Defaults omitted OpenAI click buttons to left-click.
- Retries mouse release cleanup if the final OpenAI drag release fails.
- Keeps computer-use subagent availability messages stable when provider
config cannot be loaded, while logging the backend error.
- Releases remaining OpenAI modifier keys if a synthetic key-up cleanup
action fails.
- Updates Storybook interaction stories so provider snapshots show the
selected final provider.

Michael Suchacz 033ed0bb82 feat: add admin-configurable chat title generation model (#24838)
Adds an admin-configurable deployment-wide setting that controls which
model is used for chat title generation. Admins can pick any enabled
chat model config from the Agents settings page, or leave the setting
unset to keep the existing fast-models-then-chat-model fallback
algorithm.

When a model is selected, both automatic and manual title generation use
only that model, with no silent fallback. When the configured model is
disabled, missing credentials, or otherwise unusable, automatic title
generation skips entirely (best-effort) and manual title regeneration
returns a clear error, so admins notice the misconfiguration instead of
silently routing title traffic through another provider.

## Surface

- New deployment-wide setting stored as a `site_configs` row
(`agents_chat_title_generation_model_override`).
- New experimental endpoint `GET/PUT
/api/experimental/chats/config/model-override/{context}`.
- Frontend: title generation now appears as a third dropdown on the
Agents admin settings page alongside the existing general and explore
context overrides.

## DRY refactors folded in

Title generation is integrated as a third value of the existing
`ChatModelOverrideContext` type alongside `general` and `explore`,
sharing the parameterized HTTP route, SDK methods, generated types, and
frontend API plumbing rather than introducing a parallel surface. The
`Agent` prefix was dropped from the type and route since title
generation is not a delegated agent.

The chatd model-override resolver is also shared.
`resolveConfiguredModelOverride` now takes a `failureMode` parameter:

- Subagent overrides use soft failure: misconfigured overrides are
logged and the parent model is used.
- Title generation uses hard failure: misconfigured overrides return an
explicit error so manual title regeneration surfaces the
misconfiguration and automatic title generation skips instead of
silently falling back.

Michael Suchacz dbcc654d28 feat: snapshot explore subagent tool entitlements (#24638)
Explore sub-agents previously could not use `web_search` or external MCP
tools. `runChat` hard-skipped both for Explore. Lifting those guards
naively would over-grant tools, because a child chat could outlive the
spawning turn's plan-mode filter.

This change persists the spawning parent turn's filtered external MCP
server IDs onto the child Explore chat, and simplifies the Explore
provider-tool filter in `runChat`:

- New `resolveExploreToolSnapshot` helper: computes the child's
inherited external MCP subset by running the parent's configs through
`filterExternalMCPConfigsForTurn` (plan-mode policy) and, if the parent
is itself an Explore child, further narrowing to the parent's own
persisted `MCPServerIDs`. The result is written to the child's
`MCPServerIDs` column at spawn time.
- The existing `mcp_server_ids` column is the sole durable snapshot. No
new chat column is added.
- `runChat` for Explore children: loads MCP tools from the persisted
snapshot, and keeps only `web_search` from provider-native tools (to
block computer-use and other write-style tools, since Explore is
read-only). Whether `web_search` is actually available is a per-model
decision, determined by the current model config, just like a main chat.
- Built-in Explore allowlist is unchanged. Workspace-local MCP remains
excluded for Explore.

Verification: `go build ./...`, `go test ./coderd/x/chatd/... -count=1`,
`make gen` (clean tree), `make lint/emdash`, `go vet`. Deep-review ran
12 reviewers on the feature and 5 on the clarity refactor; CAR reviewed
and approved; a subsequent scope reduction dropped a temporary
`allow_web_search` column in favor of per-model handling.

Michael Suchacz 9b5d09ebdc test(coderd/x/chatd): seed anthropic provider for computer_use tests (#24611)
`TestSubagentLifecycleToolsIncludePersistedSubagentTypeAcrossVariants/ComputerUse`
and two adjacent positive tests passed a static Anthropic key into
`newInternalTestServer`, but `seedInternalChatDeps` only inserts an
OpenAI
provider. At runtime, `Server.resolveUserProviderAPIKeys` calls
`chatprovider.PruneDisabledProviderKeys`, which clears `keys.Anthropic`
because Anthropic is not in the enabled DB provider set, so the
`computer_use` execution path loses its key.

Add a focused test helper `seedEnabledAnthropicProvider` and use it only
in
the positive tests that actually drive a `computer_use` spawn through
the
runtime key-resolution path (the `computer_use` branch of
`TestSubagentLifecycleToolsIncludePersistedSubagentTypeAcrossVariants`,
`TestSpawnAgent_ComputerUseUsesComputerUseModelNotParent`, and
`TestSpawnAgent_ComputerUseInheritsMCPServerIDs`).
`seedInternalChatDeps`
stays unchanged, so the negative availability tests continue to model
the
"Anthropic unavailable" fixture. No production code is modified.

Michael Suchacz f073323c89 refactor: unify subagent spawn behind spawn_subagent (#24535)
Unify the three subagent spawn tools (`spawn_agent`,
`spawn_explore_agent`, `spawn_computer_use_agent`) behind a single
`spawn_subagent` tool keyed by a `subagent_type` discriminant
(`general`, `explore`, `computer_use`). Mirrors the single-entry-point
pattern already used by `task` in mux while keeping `wait_agent`,
`message_agent`, and `close_agent` as separate lifecycle tools.

A new backend subagent definition catalog
(`coderd/x/chatd/subagent_catalog.go`) is the source of truth for tool
description, prompt guidance, availability rules (plan mode,
desktop/Anthropic gating), and child-chat option building.
`spawn_subagent` advertises only the types available in the current
context and validates `subagent_type` server-side; context inheritance
still flows through the existing `createChildSubagentChatWithOptions`
path. `wait_agent`, `message_agent`, and `close_agent` responses now
include a server-derived `subagent_type` so the UI stops inferring
lifecycle state from tool names.

The frontend gets a shared normalization helper
(`site/src/pages/AgentsPage/components/ChatElements/tools/subagentDescriptor.ts`)
that maps either legacy tool names or new `spawn_subagent` args into a
common descriptor (action, variant, icon, fallback copy). Legacy
transcripts still render identically; `Tool.tsx`, `SubagentTool.tsx`,
`ToolLabel.tsx`, `ToolIcon.tsx`, and `messageParsing.ts` now key off the
descriptor instead of hard-coded names. Existing UI copy is preserved
(`Spawning Explore agent...`, `Using the computer...`, computer-use
monitor icon and Open Desktop affordance).

This PR adds durable chat attachments to chatd. `attach_file`, explicit `computer` screenshot actions (not the automatic post-action screenshots), and `propose_plan` now fetch bytes over the agent connection, store them in `chat_files`, link them to the chat, and carry attachment metadata in tool responses so `buildAssistantPartsForPersist` can materialize ordinary `type:"file"` assistant parts that the chat file APIs serve.

The same storage helpers are reused for other artifact-producing paths. `wait_agent` recordings and thumbnails are stored as chat files and linked back to the parent chat, with best-effort relinking so parent chats retain those artifacts without leaving orphaned rows when chat-file caps reject links. `storeChatAttachment` wraps insert + link in one transaction, files are capped at 10 MB each and 20 per chat, and serving defaults to `Content-Disposition: attachment` with an explicit inline-safe allowlist.

This PR also consolidates chat-file media policy in `coderd/chatfiles`. Uploads and tool-generated attachments share byte-based MIME detection, SVG blocking, inline-safety rules, and compatible `text/plain` refinement for JSON, CSV, and Markdown. Prompt construction still only inlines synthetic pasted text for model consumption; assistant-created attachments are persisted for the user and intentionally not replayed into later LLM turns.

UI follow-up lives in #24281.

Michael Suchacz 73b5058923 feat: add Explore mode as subagent-only modality (#24448)
> This PR was authored by Mux on behalf of Mike.

Introduce Explore mode, a read-only subagent modality for delegated
discovery and code investigation.

## What

Adds a `spawn_explore_agent` tool that creates child chats restricted to
read-only operations. An admin can optionally configure a
deployment-wide
model override so Explore subagents use a model optimized for large
context
or reasoning without changing the root chat's model.

### Backend

- New `ChatModeExplore` enum value (migration 000471).
- `spawn_explore_agent` tool definition with read-only allowlist:
`read_file`, `execute`, `process_output`, `read_skill`,
`read_skill_file`.
Write tools, file editors, and nested subagent spawning are blocked.
- Deployment config storage for the Explore model override
  (`agents_chat_explore_model_override` in `site_configs`).
- Model resolution hierarchy: configured override, then current turn
model,
then global default. Silent fallback with warning log when the override
  becomes unavailable.
- RBAC: `AsChatd` for daemon reads, `ActionRead` and `ActionUpdate` on
  `ResourceDeploymentConfig` for admin API calls.
- Plan mode root chats can use `spawn_explore_agent` for read-only
research,
  matching the planning prompt guidance.
- The Explore override config API now reports malformed saved overrides
as
"treated as unset" so admins can clear them explicitly.

### Frontend

- `ExploreModelOverrideSettings` component in admin agent behavior
settings.
Uses `ModelSelector`, handles unavailable model warnings, and supports
  explicit Save and Clear actions.
- Malformed saved overrides show a warning and require an explicit Save
to
clear, instead of Clear auto-submitting behind the scenes.

### Tests

- Integration: `TestExploreSubagentIsReadOnly` (full spawn flow, tool
  verification, prompt overlay, DB state).
- Unit: tool allowlist tests for explore, plan, and default modes.
- Internal: model override resolution with valid, invalid UUID,
disabled, and
  unconfigured override scenarios.
- RBAC: `dbauthz_test.go` for `GetChatExploreModelOverride` and
  `UpsertChatExploreModelOverride`.
- API: admin set and clear, malformed stored override reporting,
disabled
  model rejection, non-admin denial.

Michael Suchacz 1cf0354f72 feat: add plan mode with restricted tool boundary (#24236)
> This PR was authored by Mux on behalf of Mike.

## Summary
- add persistent plan mode for chats and the chat-specific plan file
flow
- add structured planning tools such as `ask_user_question` and
`propose_plan`
- keep `write_file` and `edit_files` constrained to the chat-specific
plan file during plan turns
- allow shell exploration in plan mode, including subagents, via
`execute` and `process_output`
- block implementation-oriented, provider-native, MCP, dynamic, and
computer-use tools during plan turns
- update the chat UI, tests, and docs for the new planning flow

Kyle Carberry 6c62d8f5e6 fix(coderd/x/chatd): fix flaky TestAwaitSubagentCompletion/CompletesViaPubsub (#24066)
## Fix flaky TestAwaitSubagentCompletion/CompletesViaPubsub

Fixes coder/internal#1435

### Root Cause

During `createParentChildChats`, the processor publishes notifications
on `ChatStreamNotifyChannel(child.ID)` via PostgreSQL `LISTEN/NOTIFY`.
After `drainInflight()` returns, these stale notifications can still be
buffered in the pgListener's `NotifyChan()`. When
`awaitSubagentCompletion` subscribes and a stale notification is
dispatched between `setChatStatus(Waiting)` and
`insertAssistantMessage`, `checkSubagentCompletion` sees `done=true`
(status is `Waiting`) but returns an empty report because the message
hasn't been committed yet.

### Fix

Swap the order: insert the assistant message **before** transitioning
the status to `Waiting`. This guarantees the report is committed before
the status makes the chat appear complete to `checkSubagentCompletion`.

### Verification

- 50 consecutive runs of the specific test: all pass
- 10 runs of the full `TestAwaitSubagentCompletion` suite: all pass
- 20 runs with `-race`: all pass
