## Problem
Generated reference docs (`docs/reference/cli/*`,
`docs/reference/api/*`) contained raw placeholder and JSON syntax that
came straight from Go CLI help strings and swagger annotations. HTML
renderers treat the angle-bracket tokens (`<team-slug>`, `<uuid>`,
`<KEY>`, etc.) as unknown tags and drop them, so readers see
broken/half-missing text today. The same strings also break MDX parsing.
## Fix
Wrap the placeholder/JSON syntax in backticks **at the source** (Go help
strings and swagger annotation comments), then `make gen`. Rendered docs
now show the placeholders as inline code instead of dropping them.
### Source changes
| File | Placeholder wrapped | Surfaces in |

Everything else in the diff (`coderd/apidoc/*`, `docs/reference/**`,
`*.golden`, `site/src/api/typesGenerated.ts`) is `make gen` output.
## Reviewer notes (the "considered pass" from the ticket)
- **Product-visible:** this changes `coder server --help` and `coder
tokens create --help` output, and the `server-config.yaml` reference
comment. Backticks in terminal help are literal but read fine as
placeholder markers.
- **Settings UI:** the `deployment.go` `Description` also renders in the
deployment settings page. If that field is not Markdown-rendered,
literal backticks will show there. Happy to drop the `deployment.go`
change if you'd rather keep the UI text clean and fix `server.md`
another way.
- **Out of scope here:** `docs/reference/cli/agent-firewall.md`
(`<host>`/`<glob>`) is generated from the external
`github.com/coder/boundary` module, not this repo. It needs an upstream
fix + module bump; not included in this PR.

- Scope taken from DOCS-551: source-level backtick pass for generated
reference docs only. Hand-written Markdown fixes are tracked separately
(companion ticket).
- Swagger `@Param` descriptions are Go comments, so the existing `\|`
pipe-escaping in the chats `q` filter is preserved inside the new
backticks (still required for the Markdown table cell to render `|`).
- Verified after `make gen`: generated docs render placeholders as code
spans, table pipes intact; `gofmt` clean; changed Go packages build; no
emdash/endash introduced.
- Deliberately left the `AIProviderConfig` type-level doc comment
untouched because it does not surface in any generated doc (kept the
diff to doc-feeding comments).

## Evidence: placeholders dropped on the live docs site
Verified **2026-07-14** against the live site (`coder.com/docs`, i.e.
`main`, pre-merge) by loading each affected page in headless Chrome and
reading the post-hydration DOM (confirmed identical in the raw page
payload). Each simple `<token>` placeholder is parsed as an **empty
custom HTML element**, so the browser renders nothing for it and the
placeholder text disappears from the page.

### Accuracy note — cases that do *not* drop on live
These render fine today, so they are **not** evidence of dropping (the
PR still wraps them for consistency / MDX-safety):
-
[`api/organizations`](https://coder.com/docs/reference/api/organizations)
and
[`api/provisioning`](https://coder.com/docs/reference/api/provisioning):
`{'tag1':'value1','tag2':'value2'}` renders verbatim — curly braces are
not an HTML tag.
- Tokens containing `/` or `|` are escaped by the renderer and stay
visible (as literal `<...>`): `<username/uuid/me>`, `<org-name/uuid>`,
`<owner/repo>`, `<draft|open|merged|closed>`,
`<created_by_me|shared_with_me>`. Backticks still improve their
readability, but they were never dropped.
Tasks created through the API now enforce required external auth:
`tasksCreate` rejects an owner who is missing a required (non-optional)
provider with a 403 before generating a task name or inserting any rows,
matching the gate `createWorkspace` already applies to workspaces. Adds
`TestCreateTaskExternalAuth` covering the required and optional-provider
cases.
Fixes PLAT-298.

## Summary
The control-plane HTTP client used to talk to workspace agents followed
HTTP redirects and trusted the redirected host, letting a malicious
workspace agent bounce a coderd request onto a different agent on the
shared tailnet. Because the agent HTTP API on port 4 is unauthenticated
(it relies on tailnet reachability plus control-plane authorization),
this allowed cross-tenant file read/write and remote code execution.
This PR refuses redirects and pins every dial to the intended agent.
Closes CODAGT-668.
## Problem
`agentConn.apiClient` in `codersdk/workspacesdk/agentconn.go`
constructed an `http.Client` with no `CheckRedirect`, so Go's default
policy followed up to 10 redirects. Its custom `Transport.DialContext`
parsed the host from the (post-redirect) request URL and dialed that IP
over the shared tailnet, validating only that the port was
`AgentHTTPAPIServerPort` (4). It never pinned the connection to the
intended `AgentID` / `agentAddress()`.
A workspace owner (any regular org member, not just admins) controls
their own agent and can make its port-4 handler return a `3xx`
`Location` pointing at a victim agent's tailnet IP. When a control-plane
action (for example a chat tool or the HTTP MCP server) sends an agent
API request to the attacker's agent, coderd acts as a confused deputy
and replays the request against the victim:
- `301/302/303` rewrite POST to GET, but `307/308` preserve method and
body when the body is replayable. The real callers pass replayable
bodies, so a redirected `POST /api/v0/write-file` writes
attacker-controlled content into the victim workspace and a redirected
`POST /api/v0/processes/start` executes it, giving RCE on the victim
agent.
The dangerous callers run server-side on coderd's single deployment-wide
`ServerTailnet`, which is authorized to tunnel to any agent, so the
blast radius is cross-tenant / cross-organization (limited in practice
to victim agents coderd currently has a live tunnel to).
## Fix
In `agentConn.apiClient`:
- Set `CheckRedirect: http.ErrUseLastResponse` so the client never
follows a redirect. A `3xx` is surfaced to the caller as the response
(which the existing `ReadBodyAsError` path turns into an error) instead
of being replayed against another host.
- Capture the intended agent address once from `AgentID` (`agentAddr :=
netip.AddrPortFrom(c.agentAddress(), AgentHTTPAPIServerPort)`), reject
any dial whose host or port does not match it, and always dial that
pinned address rather than the URL-derived host.
In `coderd/aitasks.go`, the task app proxy client (`taskAppHTTPClient`)
also now sets `CheckRedirect: http.ErrUseLastResponse`. This client
dials through `agentConn.DialContext`, which already pins the host to
the originating workspace's agent (it takes only the port from the dial
address), so it was never cross-agent. The change is hardening for
parity so a malicious app cannot bounce the request to a different port
on the same agent.
## Hardening and defense in depth
The two layers are independent. `CheckRedirect` removes the
redirect-following behavior entirely, and the dial pinning guarantees
that even a request constructed with a foreign host can only ever reach
the intended agent. Removing either one in the future cannot, on its
own, reintroduce the cross-agent vector.
## Tests
- `codersdk/workspacesdk/agentconn_redirect_test.go` builds a three-peer
tailnet (client, attacker, victim). The attacker agent redirects to the
victim's port-4 URL, and the test asserts that `GET` `302`, `POST`
`307`, and `POST` `308` all return an error and that the victim is never
contacted.
- `coderd/aitasks_internal_test.go` adds
`TestTaskAppHTTPClient_RejectsRedirect`, which verifies the task app
client surfaces a `307` instead of following it to a stand-in victim.
## Why this closes the whole vulnerability class
`apiClient` is the only HTTP chokepoint to the agent port-4 API, so
fixing it covers every server-side caller:
- Every agent HTTP API method in `agentConn` funnels through
`apiClient`, either via `apiRequest`, a direct `apiClient(ctx).Do(...)`
(`ExecuteDesktopAction`), or as the websocket `HTTPClient`
(`WatchContainers`, `WatchGit`, `ConnectDesktopVNC`). The websocket
handshake matters here: `coder/websocket` follows `3xx` during the
handshake by default and only requires `101` on the final hop, but it
honors the underlying client's `CheckRedirect`, so reusing `apiClient`
closes the websocket paths too.
- The HTTP MCP server coderd hosts at `/api/experimental/mcp/http`
registers tools (`coder_workspace_bash`, `_write_file`, `_read_file`,
`_edit_files`, etc.) that reach the agent through
`workspacesdk.AgentConn` methods, so they go through `apiClient` and are
covered. The same is true for agent-hosted MCP, which coderd reaches
only via `agentConn.CallMCPTool` / `ListMCPTools`. coderd never opens an
MCP client connection directly to an agent over the tailnet.
- Raw-TCP agent services (reconnecting PTY, SSH, speedtest, generic
`DialContext`) speak non-HTTP protocols and have no redirect surface.
The workspace apps reverse proxy targets user app ports, not port 4,
forwards `3xx` to the browser rather than following them, and pins its
transport to the request's agent.
- `provisionerd` does not talk to the agent HTTP API at all.
No other server-side client follows redirects to an agent-controllable
tailnet host, so no further redirect changes are required for this
class.
The "Task app is not ready to accept input" error occurs when the
agent responds successfully but its status is not "stable" (e.g.
"running"). This is a state conflict, not a gateway error. 502 was
semantically wrong because the gateway communication succeeded.
409 Conflict is correct because the request conflicts with the
agent's current state. This is consistent with how
authAndDoWithTaskAppClient already returns 409 for pending,
initializing, and paused agent states.
The pause/resume endpoints were only registered under /api/experimental
but the frontend and Go SDK were calling /api/v2, resulting in 404s.
Register the routes in the v2 group, update the SDK client paths, and
fix swagger annotations (Accept → Produce) since these POST endpoints
have no request body.
Closes https://github.com/coder/internal/issues/1261.
This pull request adds an endpoint to pause coder tasks by stopping the
underlying workspace.
* Instead of `POST /api/v2/tasks/{user}/{task}/pause`, the endpoint is
currently experimental.
* We do not currently set the build reason to `task_manual_pause`,
because build reasons are currently only used on stop transitions.
Previously we returned 400 Bad Request for all non-active states. This
was semantically incorrect for transitional and paused states where the
request is valid but conflicts with current state.
We now return 409 Conflict for pending/initializing/paused (resolvable
by waiting or resuming) and 400 for error/unknown (actual problems).
This enables client-side auto-resume orchestration per the task
lifecycle RFC.
Closescoder/internal#1265
Previously the task logs endpoint only worked when the workspace was
running, leaving users unable to view task history after pausing.
This change adds snapshot retrieval with state-based branching: active
tasks fetch live logs from AgentAPI, paused/initializing/pending tasks
return stored snapshots (providing continuity during pause/resume), and
error/unknown states return HTTP 409 Conflict.
The response includes snapshot metadata (snapshot, snapshot_at) to
indicate whether logs are live or historical.
Closescoder/internal#1254
This change adds a POST /workspaceagents/me/tasks/{task}/log-snapshot
endpoint for agents to upload task conversation history during
workspace shutdown. This allows users to view task logs even when the
workspace is stopped.
The endpoint accepts agentapi format payloads (typically last 10
messages, max 64KB), wraps them in a format envelope, and upserts to the
task_snapshots table. Uses agent token auth and validates the task
belongs to the agent's workspace.

This removes the deprecated AITaskPromptParameterName constant and all
backward compatibility code that was added for v2.28.
- Remove AITaskPromptParameterName constant from codersdk/aitasks.go
- Remove backward compatibility code in coderd/aitasks.go that populated
the "AI Prompt" parameter for templates that defined it
- Remove the backward compatibility test (OK AIPromptBackCompat)
- Update dbfake to no longer set the AI Prompt parameter
- Remove AITaskPromptParameterName from frontend TypeScript types
- Remove preset prompt read-only feature from TaskPrompt component
- Update docs to reflect that pre-2.28 definition is no longer supported
Task prompts are now exclusively stored in the tasks.prompt database
column, as introduced in the migration that added the tasks table.

Similar to https://github.com/coder/coder/pull/19375, this one uses
system permissions for fetching actual user and group data.
Modifies the `workspaces_expanded` view to fetch the required data; this way it's made available to all code paths that make use of it.
Also fixes a bug in a test helper function that can result in `null` being saved to the DB for `user_acl` or `group_acl` and break tests; a defensive check constraint that prevents this is worth a PR, e.g:
`ALTER TABLE workspaces
ADD CONSTRAINT group_acl_is_object CHECK (jsonb_typeof(group_acl) = 'object');`
Also adds missing `OwnerName` in `ConvertWorkspaceRows`.

## Problem
Tasks currently only expose a machine-friendly name field (e.g.
`task-python-debug-a1b2`), but this value is primarily an identifier
rather than a clean, descriptive label. We need a separate
display-friendly name for use in the UI.
This PR introduces a new `display_name` field and updates the task-name
generation flow. The Claude system prompt was updated to return valid
JSON with both `name` and `display_name`. The name generation logic
follows a fallback chain (Anthropic > prompt sanitization > random
fallback). To make task names more closely resemble their display names,
the legacy `task-` prefix has been removed. For context, PR
https://github.com/coder/coder/pull/20834 introduced a small Task icon
to the workspace list to help identify workspaces associated to tasks.
## Changes
- Database migration: Added `display_name` column to tasks table
- Updated system prompt to generate both task name and display name as
valid JSON
- Task name generation now follows a fallback chain: Anthropic > prompt
sanitization > random fallback
- Removed `task-` prefix from task names to allow more descriptive names
- Note: PR https://github.com/coder/coder/pull/20834 adds a Task icon to
workspaces in the workspace list to distinguish task-created workspaces

## Problem
With the new tasks data model, a task starts with an `initializing`
status. However, the API returns `current_state: null` to represent the
agent state, causing the frontend to display "No message available".
This PR updates `codersdk.Task` to return a `current_state` when the
task is initializing with meaningful messages about what's happening
during task initialization.

## Changes
- Populate `current_state` with descriptive initialization messages when
task status is `initializing` and no valid app status exists for the

Create task was still mentioning magic prompt parameter when checking
template task validity. This change updates it to only mention validity
of `coder_ai_task` resource.
Relates to

If the workspace relating to a task was deleted, most of the
workspace-related fields in `taskFromDBTaskAndWorkspace` will be
zero-valued. However, we can still get information relating to the owner
so that "created by" shows up correctly in the UI.
Updates the `tasks_with_status` view with a join on `visible_users` to
get owner-related info.
Updates the UI to use the new API endpoints for tasks and use its new
data model.
Disclaimer: Since the base data model for tasks changed, we had to do a
quite large refactor and I'm sorry for that 🙏, but you'll notice most of
the changes are to adjust the types.

As we're moving away from the SidebarAppID nomenclature, this PR
introduces a new `TaskAppID` field to `codersdk.WorkspaceBuild` and
deprecates the `AITaskSidebarAppID` field. They both contain the same
value.
Reverts coder/coder#20181
I realized we don’t need this in the task response. When loading a task,
we already need much more workspace information, so it makes more sense
to fetch the workspace data separately instead of trying to embed all
its details into the response.
I think we can keep the task response clean and focused on the essential
information needed to list tasks. For more specific details, we can
fetch the related resources as needed. So, I’m reverting this PR.
This changes the task get endpoint to omit app statuses for previous
'lifetimes' of a workspace.
It also introduces a [breaking
change](https://github.com/coder/coder/blob/release/2.26/codersdk/aitasks.go#L83)
to bring `TaskStateComplete` in line with
`WorkspaceAppStatusStateComplete`. I can alternatively revert this
change and add a conversion function between the two SDK types.
Due to how we currently label a workspace as a task, there is a delay
between when a task workspace is created and when it is labelled as a
task.
This PR introduces fallback check for when a workspace does _not_ have
`HasAITask` set. This fallback check tests to see if the special "AI
Prompt" parameter is present in the workspace's build parameters.
Coder Tasks requires us to create a workspace, but we want to be able to
return a `codersdk.Task` instead of a `codersdk.Workspace`. This
requires untangling `createWorkspace` from directly writing to
`http.ResponseWriter`.
