Michael Suchacz a3eb1ee930 fix: gate MCP user tokens on owner-scoped personal RBAC (#27945)
Re-gates every `mcp_server_user_tokens` dbauthz method from
`rbac.ResourceDeploymentConfig` onto owner-scoped personal actions,
mirroring the `external_auth_links` prior art. These are per-user
credential rows, not deployment config, and the old gate forced every
call site to elevate with `dbauthz.AsSystemRestricted`.

## Summary

- Reads gate on `ActionReadPersonal` and writes on
`ActionUpdatePersonal` against the token owner
(`MCPServerUserToken.RBACObject()` derives from `user_id`). The id-keyed
refresh and refresh-failure mutations resolve the owner via a
`GetMCPServerUserTokenByID` prefetch inside dbauthz; the mutation
queries cannot retarget a row's owner, so there is no fetch-authorize
race.
- All seven token-path `AsSystemRestricted` elevations in
`coderd/mcp.go` and all four in chatd are removed along with their
`//nolint:gocritic` markers; handlers use the request actor.
- The daemon-wide chatd subject keeps only `ActionReadPersonal` on
`ResourceUser`. Background token refresh and failure persistence use a
new per-user `AsChatdTokenOwner` subject holding only user-level
`ActionUpdatePersonal` scoped to the token owner (both mutations resolve
the row via the underlying store, so the subject needs no read grant),
and chatd never holds site-wide personal-write access. `TestAsChatd`
pins the complete `ResourceUser` action set and
`TestMCPServerUserTokensAuth` exercises both subjects against the real
authorizer.
- New strict-authorizer test (`rbac.NewAuthorizer` against real rows):
owner passes get/upsert/delete, a stranger fails, and an org admin of
another org fails.

No user-visible behavior change. Stacked on #27944. Completes the MCP
org-separation stack.

Closes https://linear.app/codercom/issue/CODAGT-806

UAT: regression pass on a dogfood instance: OAuth2 connect redirect,
member list/status with redaction, self-scoped disconnect (cannot touch
another user's token), end-to-end chat MCP tool invocation, and
lower-stack audit/ACL smoke checks.

Michael Suchacz 7ca7c30f40 feat: add group and user ACLs to MCP server configs (#27944)
Adds group and user ACLs to org-scoped MCP server configs so
organizations can restrict specific MCP servers to subsets of members,
mirroring the template ACL pattern.

## Summary

- Migration adds `group_acl`/`user_acl` JSONB columns (nested `{"<id>":
{"permissions": [...]}}` shape) and seeds every existing config with its
organization's Everyone group read entry (the Everyone group ID equals
the org ID), so member access is unchanged by default. Creation seeds
the same entry.
- The blanket org-member read grant from the base PR is replaced by ACL
evaluation: Rego requires org membership for every ACL grant, and
`GetAuthorizedMCPServerConfigs` compiles ACL-aware SQL filters.
- New `ActionShare` (org admins) gates `GET|PATCH
/api/experimental/organizations/{organization}/mcp-servers/{mcpserverconfig}/acl`
(nested under the organization like the rest of the config surface).
PATCH validates principals against the config's organization, merges
sparse updates under a row lock, stamps `updated_by`/`updated_at`, and
is audited as a Write with `Old` captured before authorization. A config
deleted concurrently between the middleware fetch and the locked
re-fetch is concealed as 404, matching the update and delete handlers.
ACL columns are tracked in the audit table.
- ACL management is available in all editions (no enterprise
entitlement), documented in the MCP servers page. Revoking an ACL does
not retro-strip already-selected configs from existing chats; new
selection is blocked at chat create.
- Force On respects the ACL: the forced set is loaded as the chat owner,
so a `force_on` server whose ACL denies the owner never attaches at
create, send, or generation time.
- No rolling-upgrade machinery: upgrades run in scheduled maintenance
downtime, so the migration only backfills existing rows; the API sets
the Everyone read grant explicitly on every insert.

Stacked on #27943. Part of the MCP org-separation stack.

Closes https://linear.app/codercom/issue/CODAGT-712

UAT: verified on a dogfood instance with two members and a custom group:
Everyone-seed default visibility, group grant with Everyone removal
(non-member loses list/fetch/selection), foreign-principal rejection,
non-admin share denial (audited 403 / concealed 404), user_acl restore,
and audited ACL diffs.

Michael Suchacz 299e72ad30 feat: audit MCP server config changes (#27943)
Adds enterprise audit logging for MCP server config create, update, and
delete, with strict secret redaction. MCP configs hold credentials
(OAuth2 client secrets, API keys, custom headers), so admin changes to
them need an audit trail.

## Summary

- `enterprise/audit/table.go` gains an `MCPServerConfig` entry
enumerating every column: `oauth2_client_secret`, `api_key_value`, and
`custom_headers` are `ActionSecret` (never appear in diffs); dbcrypt
`*_key_id` bookkeeping, IDs, and timestamps are ignored; the remaining
config fields, including the endpoint URL fields, are tracked so
auditors can see which endpoints a config points at.
- Type registration in `coderd/audit` (diff, request, resource target
with org attribution), `codersdk/audit.go`, and a `resource_type` enum
migration.
- Handlers wire `audit.InitRequest`: create records `New`; update and
delete record `Old` from the param middleware before the
write-authorization check, so a readable-but-not-writable caller
produces an audited 403 while read-denied callers stay concealed as
unaudited 404s.
- Tests: create/update/delete audit entries, write-denied and
delete-denied 403 auditing, cross-org concealment producing zero
entries, and a serializer-level regression test proving none of the
three secret classes can reach a serialized diff.
- Review round: MCP config audit entries link to
`/ai/settings/mcp-servers/{id}`, audit table comments are trimmed per
review, and a fault-injection test pins that a config row surviving a
failed post-discovery credential update still gets its creation audit
entry.

Stacked on #27942 (org-scoped MCP configs). Part of the MCP
org-separation stack.

Closes https://linear.app/codercom/issue/CODAGT-717

UAT: verified on a trial-licensed dogfood instance: audit entries for

Michael Suchacz f2bc9ab1f5 docs: complete swagger annotations for organization-scoped MCP routes (#28064)
Adds the missing swagger annotations for the eight organization-scoped
MCP server config routes introduced in #27942 and checks in the
regenerated API artifacts (`coderd/apidoc`, `docs/reference/api`). No
behavior changes: 58 hand-written annotation lines, the rest is
generated output.

## Stack context

Part of the MCP org-separation stack (CODAGT-711 org scope -> apidocs ->
hardening -> CODAGT-717 audit -> CODAGT-712 ACLs -> CODAGT-806 token
RBAC). Split out of #27942 to keep the core cutover reviewable; these
routes live under `/api/experimental`, where main already ships several
MCP handlers without annotations, so the base PR is consistent with
existing precedent until this lands.

Closes nothing on its own; documentation completion for CODAGT-711.

Michael SuchaczandMathias Fredriksson 443e3b9b80 feat!: org-scope MCP server configs with RBAC (#27942)
Moves `mcp_server_configs` from deployment scope to organization scope
so each organization fully controls the MCP servers its members can use
with Coder Agents.

## Summary

- Migration: adds `organization_id` (NOT NULL, FK) and keeps existing
rows as the default organization's originals with credentials intact.
Other organizations start with no MCP servers and configure their own;
nothing is copied across organizations. Chats outside the default
organization keep any now-cross-organization `mcp_server_ids` entries;
the runtime already ignores IDs that do not resolve in the chat's
organization, so no data rewrite is needed. Slug uniqueness becomes
`(organization_id, slug)`.
- RBAC: new org-scoped `ResourceMCPServerConfig` with regosql converter
and `GetAuthorizedMCPServerConfigs`; org admins get in-org CRUD, org
members get read (replaced by ACL evaluation in the follow-up ACL PR in
this stack).
- API: all config routes nest under the organization, matching
templates: `POST|GET
/api/experimental/organizations/{organization}/mcp-servers` and
`GET|PATCH|DELETE .../mcp-servers/{mcpserverconfig}` (plus
`oauth2/connect`), resolved by a read-only param middleware that
conceals read-denied and cross-organization access as 404. Two routes
stay on the frozen `/api/experimental/mcp/servers/{mcpServer}` block:
the OAuth2 callback (the redirect URI baked into existing AS-side client
registrations) and `oauth2/disconnect`, which must remain reachable by
users removed from the organization so they can still revoke their token
grant.
- Chat runtime: selection validation and generation resolve configs
strictly by IDs, enabled state, and the chat's organization in SQL;
requested duplicates are normalized; invalid or cross-org IDs are
rejected with the precise ID list. IDs already persisted on a chat are
exempt from message-time rejection so disabling a selected server never
blocks sends; generation skips servers that are no longer usable.
- Frontend: API layer and admin settings pages target the new endpoints.
The admin page manages the default organization's servers; the org
picker is tracked separately (CODAGT-714).

- Security hardening from review: OAuth user grants are additionally
bound to `oauth2_revocation_url` (changing it invalidates grants, and a
racing OAuth callback gets 409 instead of recreating a grant).
Stack-wide SSRF protection for MCP config-directed traffic was split
into its own PR at the top of this stack (#28242) to keep this diff
reviewable; this PR keeps main's existing discovery IP-range guard.
OAuth2 auto-discovery now completes before the config row is inserted: a
failed discovery persists nothing, and there is no provisional row that
concurrent updates could race against.

Two follow-up PRs in this stack were split out to keep this diff
reviewable: #28064 completes the swagger annotations for the moved
routes (main already ships these experimental MCP handlers unannotated),
and #28065 carries hardening fixes and regression pins on top of the
cutover.

- Force On enforcement (landed on main mid-review) is org-scoped: the
forced set is read per chat organization
(`GetForcedMCPServerConfigsByOrganization`), so another organization's
`force_on` server never attaches to a chat.

## Breaking changes (experimental API)

The MCP server config endpoints move from the deployment-scoped
`/api/experimental/mcp/servers` block to organization-nested paths:
`POST|GET /api/experimental/organizations/{organization}/mcp-servers`
and `GET|PATCH|DELETE
/api/experimental/organizations/{organization}/mcp-servers/{mcpserverconfig}`
(plus `oauth2/connect`). The old paths are removed, so API consumers
must supply an organization. Two routes intentionally stay on the frozen
`/api/experimental/mcp/servers/{mcpServer}` block: the OAuth2 callback
(its redirect URI is baked into existing AS-side client registrations)
and `oauth2/disconnect` (must remain reachable by users removed from the
organization). These endpoints are under `/api/experimental`, so no
deprecation window is provided.

## Rolling upgrades

During a rolling deploy, an old replica creating an MCP config can fail
the new `NOT NULL organization_id` constraint until it is upgraded
(reads are unaffected: old binaries' generated queries select their own
column lists). This matches the repo's existing precedent for additive
NOT NULL migrations (000562) and affects only the admin config-create
path in the upgrade window.

Upgrades are expected to run in scheduled maintenance downtime with the
database locked during migration, so the migration ships no
rolling-upgrade compatibility machinery. The down migration deletes
organization-created configs (their chat references are cleaned by the
000510 delete trigger) and restores deployment-wide slug uniqueness.

Part of the MCP org-separation stack (CODAGT-711 -> CODAGT-717 audit ->
CODAGT-712 ACLs -> CODAGT-806 token RBAC).

Closes https://linear.app/codercom/issue/CODAGT-711

UAT: validated end to end on a two-org dogfood deployment, including a
real pre-migration to post-migration upgrade, cross-org isolation
(404s), same-slug-two-orgs, chat selection gating, and a live MCP tool
call through the org-scoped generation path. The migration was later
revised to keep existing rows in the default organization only (no
per-organization copies); that revision is covered by the migration test
suite.

Michael Suchacz e92fd8e96f chore: retire mark3labs/mcp-go dependency (#28061)
## Stack Context

PR 6 of 6 in a stack that migrates every Coder MCP surface from the
archived `github.com/mark3labs/mcp-go` library to the official
`github.com/modelcontextprotocol/go-sdk` v1.7.0.

Stack: #28056 -> #28057 -> #28058 -> #28059 -> #28060 -> #28061

## Why

With every production surface migrated, this PR removes the mark3labs
dependency entirely and converts the remaining test fixtures.

- Migrates the remaining mark3labs test fixtures (coderd MCP e2e tests,
chatd fixtures, mcpclient fixtures, and the Force On MCP policy tests)
to official stateless SDK servers.
- Removes `github.com/mark3labs/mcp-go` from `go.mod` and drops the
corresponding dependabot ignore entry. Zero references remain repo-wide.
- Updates the MCP docs for the 2026-07-28 protocol: stateless Streamable
HTTP behavior, the supported 2024-11-05 through 2026-07-28 protocol
range, and explicit non-features (resources, prompts, structured output,
elicitation, MCP Tasks).
- The e2e ping assertion is removed because MCP 2026-07-28 removed the
ping method.

Michael Suchacz 9f4ddea571 feat: revoke MCP server OAuth grants at the provider on disconnect (#27300)
Closes
[CODAGT-805](https://linear.app/codercom/issue/CODAGT-805/revoke-oauth-grants-at-the-source-for-mcp-servers).

The experimental MCP server OAuth2 disconnect endpoint previously
deleted only the stored token row, leaving the grant active at the OAuth
provider. This PR adds provider-side token revocation while keeping
local disconnect independent of provider availability.

## Changes

- Add `mcp_server_configs.oauth2_revocation_url` in migration `000547`.
The value can be configured manually, discovered from RFC 8414 metadata,
and managed through the MCP server settings UI. Non-admin responses
redact it with the other OAuth2 fields.
- Revoke the refresh token first through the RFC 7009 endpoint, then
fall back to the access token only for `unsupported_token_type`. Public
clients send `client_id`; confidential clients use
`client_secret_basic`.
- Delete the local token transactionally before best-effort provider
revocation. Callers without a token receive the same response for hidden
and nonexistent config IDs, and provider failures return a generic
warning without exposing provider response bodies.
- Require HTTPS revocation endpoints except for HTTP loopback URLs.
Redirects must preserve the POST and remain on the configured origin.
Redirect errors omit provider-controlled paths and query strings so
reflected token material cannot enter logs.
- Treat `200 OK` and `204 No Content` as completed revocations. `202
Accepted` remains a failure because it does not confirm completion.
- Prevent an in-flight refresh from recreating a token deleted by
disconnect. Refresh persistence now uses an optimistic update keyed by
token ID and `updated_at`; only the OAuth callback can create a token
row. Refresh conflicts reload the current row or clear in-memory auth
when disconnect deleted it.
- Return `{token_revoked, token_revocation_error}` from disconnect,
while retaining SDK compatibility with the legacy `204` response. The UI
surfaces provider revocation failures as warning toasts.
- Document revocation endpoint discovery, HTTPS requirements, and
best-effort disconnect behavior.

No token or no configured revocation URL returns `token_revoked: false`
without an error, so disconnect remains idempotent.

Michael Suchacz e489092154 feat: handle revoked OAuth grants for MCP servers gracefully (#27264)
Closes
[CODAGT-792](https://linear.app/codercom/issue/CODAGT-792/handle-revoked-oauth-grants-for-mcp-servers-gracefully).

When a user revokes an upstream OAuth grant for an MCP server used by
Coder Agents, Coder kept treating the cached token as valid:
`invalid_grant` refresh failures were logged and swallowed, the dead
bearer token kept being attached, the list endpoints re-attempted the
refresh on every call, and the UI kept showing the server as
authenticated.

## Changes

Backend, mirroring the `external_auth_links` prior art:

- New migration adds
`mcp_server_user_tokens.oauth_refresh_failure_reason`.
`UpsertMCPServerUserToken` clears it, so completing the OAuth flow again
recovers the row.
- New `MarkMCPServerUserTokenRefreshFailure` query records the failure
and clears all token material, guarded by an `updated_at` optimistic
lock so a stale failure never clobbers a concurrently refreshed token
(on a lock miss the winner's row is used).
- `mcpclient.IsPermanentRefreshError` classifies `*oauth2.RetrieveError`
codes: only `invalid_grant` and `bad_refresh_token` are permanent.
Client/config errors (`invalid_client`, `unauthorized_client`, ...) stay
transient for the user row since reconnecting cannot fix them.
- chatd token refresh and the MCP list/get endpoints persist permanent
failures, return cleared tokens for the in-flight request, and skip
provider calls for already-failed rows.
- `buildAuthHeaders` no longer attaches an Authorization header for
failed tokens, so chat degrades by omitting that server's tools instead
of sending a dead bearer.

API and UI:

- No new API surface. A permanently failed token simply reports
`auth_connected: false`, so the existing "Auth" button and "Not
authenticated" tooltip appear and the user re-runs the same OAuth flow
to recover. An earlier revision added an `auth_status` enum (`connected`
/ `not_connected` / `reconnect_required`) with a dedicated "Reconnect"
button; it was collapsed to keep the API minimal since both states lead
to the identical re-auth action.

Out of scope (follow-up): typed 401-on-connect detection and forced
refresh. mcp-go exposes no stable typed 401 signal in the static-header
path, so a revocation while the access token still looks valid locally
stays undetected until expiry triggers a refresh.

## Testing

- Unit and integration tests: classifier, chatd refresh paths
(permanent/transient/race/persist-failure), API endpoints (revoked,
transient, no-retry caching, re-auth recovery, stale-lock), dbauthz,
dbcrypt, migrations.
- Dogfood UAT against a dev instance with a mock IdP returning
`invalid_grant`: revoked grant detected on refresh and persisted once
(no repeated IdP calls), chat with the revoked server selected completes
with the server's tools omitted, and re-auth restores the connected
state.

Kyle CarberryandCoder Agents d889ba1842 feat: add user_oidc auth type for MCP servers (#24793)
Adds a 5th MCP server authentication mode, `user_oidc` ("User OIDC
Identity"), that forwards the calling user's OIDC access token from
`user_links.oauth_access_token` to the upstream MCP server as
`Authorization: Bearer <token>`.

The token is read from `user_links` and refreshed transparently via
`oauth2.TokenSource` before each MCP request. No new per-MCP-server
secret storage and no per-user connect/disconnect step.

**Limitation**: only users who logged in via OIDC have a forwardable
token. Users authenticated via password or GitHub will see requests sent
without an `Authorization` header, and the upstream MCP server is
expected to respond with 401. A pluggable token source (e.g. CLI-minted
E2E tokens) is left as future work.

<details>
<summary>Implementation notes</summary>

- Schema: new
`coderd/database/migrations/000481_mcp_user_oidc_auth.{up,down}.sql`
relaxes the `mcp_server_configs.auth_type` CHECK constraint to include
`user_oidc`. Down migration deletes affected rows before restoring the
old constraint.
- SDK validation: `codersdk/mcp.go` extends `oneof` for
`CreateMCPServerConfigRequest` and `UpdateMCPServerConfigRequest`.
- Handler: `coderd/mcp.go` adds `case "user_oidc":` to the
field-clearing switch on update. The existing list and detail handlers
already report `auth_connected = true` for any non-`oauth2` auth type.
- Header construction: `coderd/x/chatd/mcpclient/mcpclient.go`
introduces a `UserOIDCTokenSource` interface and adds the `user_oidc`
case to `buildAuthHeaders`. `ConnectAll` / `connectOne` /
`buildAuthHeaders` gain `userID uuid.UUID, oidcSrc UserOIDCTokenSource`
parameters.
- Wiring: `coderd/x/chatd/chatd.go` adds `OIDCTokenSource` to `Config` /
`Server` and passes `chat.OwnerID` plus the source through `ConnectAll`.
`coderd/coderd.go` constructs the source next to the `chatd.New` call
when `options.OIDCConfig` is non-nil.
- Token source: `oidcMCPTokenSource` lives in `coderd/mcp.go`. It reads
the user's OIDC link, refreshes via `oauth2.TokenSource`, and writes the
refreshed token back to `user_links`. Logic is duplicated from
`provisionerdserver.ObtainOIDCAccessToken` to avoid an MCP ->
provisionerdserver dependency. The two copies must be kept in sync; a
comment on `oidcMCPTokenSource` records this.
- Frontend: `MCPServerAdminPanel.tsx` adds the new dropdown option, an
explanatory helper block (no admin-configurable fields), and a Storybook
story (`CreateServerUserOIDC`).
- Tests:
- `mcpclient_test.go`: `TestConnectAll_UserOIDCAuth`,
`TestConnectAll_UserOIDCAuth_NoLink`,
`TestConnectAll_UserOIDCAuth_NilSource`. All existing tests updated for
the new signature.
- `mcp_test.go`: extends `TestMCPServerConfigsAuthConnected` to assert
`auth_connected=true` for `user_oidc`; adds
`TestMCPServerConfigsUserOIDCClearsFields` and
`TestMCPServerConfigsUserOIDCDirect`.
- Docs: `docs/ai-coder/agents/platform-controls/mcp-servers.md`
describes the new mode and its OIDC-only limitation.

Michael Suchacz 9d0469fc4c feat: allow approved external MCP tools in root plan mode (#24509)
## Summary

Allow root plan-mode chats to use MCP tools from external servers that
an admin has explicitly approved for plan mode. Workspace MCP and
plan-mode subagents remain blocked.

## Problem

`chatd.go` excluded every MCP tool when `isPlanModeTurn` was true, so
planning had no access to tools like docs search, ticketing, etc.
Lifting that guard wholesale was unsafe: `mcp_server_configs` already
has centralized admin governance, but workspace-local MCP (discovered
from agent `.mcp.json`) does not, and subagents use a narrower trust
boundary.

## Fix

Add an admin-controlled per-server `allow_in_plan_mode` flag (default
`false`) and gate plan-mode MCP access on it.

### Backend / schema
- New migration `000472_mcp_server_allow_in_plan_mode.{up,down}.sql` and
matching fixture update.
- `mcpserverconfigs.sql` + generated code: persist and read the new
column.
- `codersdk/mcp.go`: thread the field through `MCPServerConfig`,
`Create*`, and `Update*` request types.
- `coderd/mcp.go`: validate, persist, and return the flag in
get/list/create/update handlers.

### chatd
- `coderd/x/chatd/chatd.go`: pre-filter selected external MCP configs by
`AllowInPlanMode` before calling `mcpclient.ConnectAll` on plan-mode
root turns. Workspace MCP discovery is skipped entirely on plan-mode
turns.
- Single helper decides whether a tool is available in plan mode, used
both at construction and for active-tool filtering (defense in depth).
Plan-mode subagents, dynamic tools, provider-native tools, computer-use,
and workspace MCP stay unchanged.
- `coderd/x/chatd/prompt.go`: update the root plan-mode overlay text to
match the new boundary.

### UI
- `MCPServerAdminPanel.tsx`: add an explicit toggle ("Allow all tools
from this MCP server in root plan mode") next to the existing governance
controls.
- Regenerated `site/src/api/typesGenerated.ts`.

### Docs
- `docs/ai-coder/agents/architecture.md`: replace the blanket "MCP is
unavailable in plan mode" note with the new root-only, external-only,
admin-approved policy. Explicitly call out that workspace MCP and
plan-mode subagents are still excluded.

### Tests
- Plan-mode visibility (approved vs non-approved external server).
- Plan-mode invocation of an approved external MCP tool.
- End-to-end plan-mode workflow that uses an approved MCP tool and then
reaches `propose_plan`.
- Regressions: workspace MCP still excluded in plan mode; plan-mode
subagents still on the restricted tool boundary; existing tool
allow/deny list filtering still applies.

## Policy precedence

`allow_in_plan_mode` is an **additional** requirement on top of existing
`enabled`, availability, chat-selected / forced server IDs, and tool
allow/deny lists. It approves **all tools on that server** for root plan
mode; a per-tool plan allowlist is deliberately deferred.

## Follow-ups (explicitly out of scope)

- Whether plan-mode subagents should inherit approved external MCP
tools.
- Workspace-local MCP safety model (agent-side `.mcp.json` schema vs. a
coderd-managed workspace MCP config).

## Validation

- `go vet ./coderd/x/chatd/...`
- `go test ./coderd/x/chatd -run 'TestPlan.*|TestMCP.*' -count=1`
- `go test ./coderd/x/chatd -count=1 -timeout 5m` (full chatd suite)
- `make fmt` (no diff)

Kyle Carberry d973a709df feat: add model_intent option to MCP server configs (#23717)
Add a per-MCP-server `model_intent` toggle that wraps tool schemas with
a
`model_intent` field, requiring the LLM to provide a human-readable
description of each tool call's purpose. The intent string is shown as a
status label in the UI instead of opaque tool names, and is
transparently
stripped before the call reaches the remote MCP server.

Built-in tools have rich specialized renderers (terminal blocks, file
diffs,
etc.) and don't need this. MCP tools hit `GenericToolRenderer` which
only
shows raw tool names and JSON — that's where model_intent adds value.

The model learns what to provide via the JSON Schema `description` on
the
`model_intent` property itself — no system prompt changes needed.

<details>
<summary>Implementation details</summary>

### Architecture

Inspired by the `withModelIntent()` pattern from `coder/blink`, adapted
for
Go + React. The wrapping is entirely in the `mcpclient` layer — tool
implementations never see `model_intent`.

**Schema wrapping** (`mcpToolWrapper.Info()`): When enabled, wraps the
original tool parameters under a `properties` key and adds a
`model_intent`
string field with a rich description that teaches the model inline.

**Input unwrapping** (`mcpToolWrapper.Run()`): Strips `model_intent` and
unwraps `properties` before forwarding to the remote MCP server. Handles
three input shapes models may produce:
1. `{ model_intent, properties: {...} }` — correct format
2. `{ model_intent, key: val, ... }` — flat, no wrapper
3. Malformed — falls through gracefully

**Frontend extraction**: `streamState.ts` extracts `model_intent` from
incrementally parsed streaming JSON. `messageParsing.ts` extracts it
from
persisted tool call args.

**UI rendering**: `GenericToolRenderer` shows the capitalized intent
string
as the primary label when available, falling back to the raw tool name.

### Changes
- Database: `model_intent` boolean column on `mcp_server_configs`
- SDK: `ModelIntent` field on config/create/update types
- API: pass-through in create/update handlers + converter
- mcpclient: schema wrapping in `Info()`, input unwrapping in `Run()`
- Frontend: extraction from streaming + persisted args
- UI: intent label in `GenericToolRenderer`, toggle in admin panel
- Tests: 6 new tests (schema wrapping, unwrapping, passthrough,
fallback)

### Decision log
- **Option lives on MCPServerConfig, not model config**: Built-in tools
already have rich renderers; only MCP tools benefit from model_intent.
- **No system prompt changes**: The JSON Schema `description` on the
`model_intent` property teaches the model inline.
- **Pointer bool on update request**: Follows existing pattern (`*bool`)
so PATCH requests don't reset the value when omitted.

Kyle Carberry 50c0c89503 fix(coderd): refresh expired MCP OAuth2 tokens everywhere (#23713)
Fixes expired MCP OAuth2 tokens causing 401 errors and stale
`auth_connected` status in the UI.

When users authenticate MCP servers (e.g. GitHub) via OAuth2, the access
token and refresh token are stored in the database. However, when the
access token expired, nothing refreshed it anywhere:

- **chatd**: sent the expired token as-is, getting a 401 and skipping
the MCP server
- **list/get endpoints**: reported `auth_connected: true` just because a
token record existed, regardless of expiry

## Changes

### Shared utility: `mcpclient.RefreshOAuth2Token`

Pure function that uses `golang.org/x/oauth2` `TokenSource` to check if
a token is expired (or within 10s of expiry) and refresh it. No DB
dependency — callers handle persistence.

### chatd (`coderd/x/chatd/chatd.go`)

Before calling `mcpclient.ConnectAll`, refreshes expired tokens.
Persists new credentials to the database. Falls back to the old token if
refresh fails.

### List/get MCP server endpoints (`coderd/mcp.go`)

Both `listMCPServerConfigs` and `getMCPServerConfig` now attempt refresh
when checking `auth_connected`. If the token is expired:
- **Has refresh token**: attempt refresh, persist result, report
`auth_connected` based on success
- **No refresh token**: report `auth_connected: false` if expired

This means the UI accurately reflects whether the user's token is
actually usable, rather than just whether a record exists.

<details>
<summary>Design notes</summary>

- `RefreshOAuth2Token` lives in `mcpclient` to avoid circular imports
(`coderd` → `chatd` → `mcpclient` is fine; `chatd` → `coderd` would be
circular).
- DB persistence is handled by each caller with their own authz context
(`AsSystemRestricted` in both cases).
- The `buildAuthHeaders` warning in mcpclient about expired tokens is
kept as defense-in-depth logging.

Kyle Carberry 1f13324075 fix(coderd): use path-aware discovery for MCP OAuth2 metadata (RFC 9728, RFC 8414) (#23520)
## Problem

MCP OAuth2 auto-discovery stripped the path component from the MCP
server URL
before looking up Protected Resource Metadata. Per RFC 9728 §3.1, the
well-known
URL should be path-aware:

```
{origin}/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource{path}
```

For `https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/`, the correct metadata URL is

not
`https://api.githubcopilot.com/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource`
(which
returns 404).

The same issue applied to RFC 8414 Authorization Server Metadata for
issuers
with path components (e.g. `https://github.com/login/oauth` →
`/.well-known/oauth-authorization-server/login/oauth`).

## Fix

Replace the `mcp-go` `OAuthHandler`-based discovery with a
self-contained
implementation that correctly follows path-aware well-known URI
construction for
both RFC 9728 and RFC 8414, falling back to root-level URLs when the
path-aware
form returns an error. Also implements RFC 7591 registration directly,
removing
the `mcp-go/client/transport` dependency from the discovery path.

Note: this fix resolves the discovery half of the problem for servers
like
GitHub Copilot. Full OAuth2 support for GitHub's MCP server also
requires
dynamic client registration (RFC 7591), which GitHub's authorization
server
does not currently support — that will be addressed separately.

Kyle Carberry e87ea1e0f5 fix(coderd): add PKCE support to MCP server OAuth2 flow (#23503)
## Problem

MCP servers like Linear (`mcp.linear.app`) require PKCE (RFC 7636) for
their OAuth2 flow. Without it, the token exchange may succeed but the
resulting access token is immediately rejected with a 401
`invalid_token` error when the chat daemon tries to connect to the MCP
server.

This means users can authenticate successfully in the UI (the OAuth
popup completes, `auth_connected` shows `true`), but the model never
receives the MCP tools — they silently fail to load.

### Root cause

The `mcpServerOAuth2Connect` handler was calling
`oauth2Config.AuthCodeURL(state)` without any PKCE parameters
(`code_challenge`, `code_challenge_method`). The callback was calling
`oauth2Config.Exchange(ctx, code)` without a `code_verifier`. Linear's
MCP OAuth endpoint decoded state confirms it expected PKCE with
`codeChallengeMethod: "plain"`.

### Investigation

- The chat (`c2c04fc5-5622-4b71-a5a9-80508e86f78e`) had the Linear MCP
server ID in `mcp_server_ids`
- `auth_connected: true` (token row exists in DB)
- No "expired" or "empty token" warnings in logs
- Server log showed: `skipping MCP server due to connection failure ...
error="initialize: transport error: request failed with status 401:
{"error":"invalid_token","error_description":"Missing or invalid access
token"}"`
- Decoding Linear's OAuth state revealed PKCE was expected

## Changes

- Generate a PKCE `code_verifier` during the OAuth2 connect step using
`oauth2.GenerateVerifier()` and store it in a cookie scoped to the
callback path
- Include `code_challenge` (S256) in the authorization redirect URL via
`oauth2.S256ChallengeOption()`
- Pass the `code_verifier` during the token exchange in the callback via
`oauth2.VerifierOption()`
- Fix a nil-pointer guard on `api.HTTPClient` in the callback
- Add tests verifying PKCE parameters are sent correctly and backwards
compatibility when no verifier cookie is present

Kyle Carberry 631e4449bb fix: use actual config ID in MCP OAuth2 redirect URI during auto-discovery (#23491)
## Problem

During OAuth2 auto-discovery for MCP servers, the callback URL
registered with the remote authorization server via Dynamic Client
Registration (RFC 7591) contained the literal string `{id}` instead of
the actual config UUID:

```
https://coder.example.com/api/experimental/mcp/servers/{id}/oauth2/callback
```

This happened because the discovery and registration occurred **before**
the database insert that generates the ID. When the user later initiated
the OAuth2 connect flow, the redirect URL used the real UUID, causing
the authorization server to reject it with:

> The provided redirect URIs are not approved for use by this
authorization server

## Fix

Restructure the auto-discovery flow in `createMCPServerConfig` to:

1. **Insert** the MCP server config first (with empty OAuth2 fields) to
get the database-generated UUID
2. **Build** the callback URL with the actual UUID
3. **Perform** OAuth2 discovery and dynamic client registration with the
correct URL
4. **Update** the record with the discovered OAuth2 credentials
5. **Clean up** the record if discovery fails

## Testing

Added regression test
`TestMCPServerConfigsOAuth2AutoDiscovery/RedirectURIContainsRealConfigID`
that:
- Stands up mock auth + MCP servers
- Captures the `redirect_uris` sent during dynamic client registration
- Asserts the URI contains the real config UUID, not `{id}`
- Verifies the full callback path structure

All existing MCP server config tests continue to pass.

Kyle Carberry acbfb90c30 feat: auto-discover OAuth2 config for MCP servers via RFC 7591 DCR (#23406)
## Problem

When adding an external MCP server with `auth_type=oauth2`, admins
currently must manually provide:
- `oauth2_client_id`
- `oauth2_client_secret`
- `oauth2_auth_url`
- `oauth2_token_url`

This requires the admin to manually register an OAuth2 client with the
external MCP server's authorization server first — a friction-heavy
process that contradicts the MCP spec's vision of plug-and-play
discovery.

## Solution

When an admin creates an MCP server config with `auth_type=oauth2` and
omits the OAuth2 fields, Coder now automatically discovers and registers
credentials following the MCP authorization spec:

1. **Protected Resource Metadata (RFC 9728)** — Fetches
`/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource` from the MCP server to discover
its authorization server. Falls back to probing the server URL for a
`WWW-Authenticate` header with a `resource_metadata` parameter.

2. **Authorization Server Metadata (RFC 8414)** — Fetches
`/.well-known/oauth-authorization-server` from the discovered auth
server to find all endpoints.

3. **Dynamic Client Registration (RFC 7591)** — Registers Coder as an
OAuth2 client at the auth server's registration endpoint, obtaining a
`client_id` and `client_secret` automatically.

The discovered/generated credentials are stored in the MCP server
config, and the existing per-user OAuth2 connect flow works unchanged.

### Backward compatibility

- **Manual config still works**: If all three fields
(`oauth2_client_id`, `oauth2_auth_url`, `oauth2_token_url`) are
provided, the existing behavior is unchanged.
- **Partial config is rejected**: Providing some but not all fields
returns a clear error explaining the two options.
- **Discovery failure is clear**: If auto-discovery fails, the error
message explains what went wrong and suggests manual configuration.

## Changes

- **New package `coderd/mcpauth`** — Self-contained discovery and DCR
logic with no `codersdk` dependency
- **Modified `coderd/mcp.go`** — `createMCPServerConfig` handler now
attempts auto-discovery when OAuth2 fields are omitted
- **Tests** — Unit tests for discovery (happy path, WWW-Authenticate
fallback, no registration endpoint, registration failure) and
`parseResourceMetadataParam` helper

Kyle Carberry d8ff67fb68 feat: add MCP server configuration backend for chats (#23227)
## Summary

Adds the database schema, API endpoints, SDK types, and encryption
wrappers for admin-managed MCP (Model Context Protocol) server
configurations that chatd can consume. This is the backend foundation
for allowing external MCP tools (Sentry, Linear, GitHub, etc.) to be
used during AI chat sessions.

## Database

Two new tables:
- **`mcp_server_configs`**: Admin-managed server definitions with URL,
transport (Streamable HTTP / SSE), auth config (none / OAuth2 / API key
/ custom headers), tool allow/deny lists, and an availability policy
(`force_on` / `default_on` / `default_off`). Includes CHECK constraints
on transport, auth_type, and availability values.
- **`mcp_server_user_tokens`**: Per-user OAuth2 tokens for servers
requiring individual authentication. Cascades on user/config deletion.

New column on `chats` table:
- **`mcp_server_ids UUID[]`**: Per-chat MCP server selection, following
the same pattern as `model_config_id` — passed at chat creation,
changeable per-message with nil-means-no-change semantics.

## API Endpoints

All routes are under `/api/experimental/mcp/servers/` and gated behind
the `agents` experiment.

**Admin endpoints** (`ResourceDeploymentConfig` auth):
- `POST /` — Create MCP server config
- `PATCH /{id}` — Update MCP server config (full-replace)
- `DELETE /{id}` — Delete MCP server config

**Authenticated endpoints** (all users, enabled servers only for
non-admins):
- `GET /` — List configs (admins see all, members see enabled-only with
admin fields redacted)
- `GET /{id}` — Get config by ID (with `auth_connected` populated
per-user)

**OAuth2 per-user auth flow:**
- `GET /{id}/oauth2/connect` — Initiate OAuth2 flow (state cookie CSRF
protection)
- `GET /{id}/oauth2/callback` — Handle OAuth2 callback, store tokens
- `DELETE /{id}/oauth2/disconnect` — Remove stored OAuth2 tokens

## Security

- **Secrets never returned**: `OAuth2ClientSecret`, `APIKeyValue`, and
`CustomHeaders` are never in API responses — only boolean indicators
(`has_oauth2_secret`, `has_api_key`, `has_custom_headers`).
- **Field redaction for non-admins**: `convertMCPServerConfigRedacted`
strips `OAuth2ClientID`, auth URLs, scopes, and `APIKeyHeader` from
non-admin responses.
- **dbcrypt encryption at rest**: All 5 secret fields use `dbcrypt_keys`
encryption with full encrypt-on-write / decrypt-on-read wrappers (11
dbcrypt method overrides + 2 helpers), following the same pattern as
`chat_providers.api_key`.
- **OAuth2 CSRF protection**: State parameter stored in `HttpOnly`
cookie with `HTTPCookies.Apply()` for correct `Secure`/`SameSite` behind
TLS-terminating proxies.
- **dbauthz authorization**: All 18 querier methods have authorization
wrappers. Read operations use `ActionRead`, write operations use
`ActionUpdate` on `ResourceDeploymentConfig`.

## Governance Model

| Control | Implementation |
|---------|---------------|
| **Global kill switch** | `enabled` defaults to `false` |
| **Availability policy** | `force_on` (always injected), `default_on`
(pre-selected), `default_off` (opt-in) |
| **Per-chat selection** | `mcp_server_ids` on `CreateChatRequest` /
`CreateChatMessageRequest` |
| **Auth gate** | OAuth2 servers require per-user auth before tools are
injected |
| **Tool-level allow/deny** | Arrays on `mcp_server_configs` for
granular tool filtering |
| **Secrets encrypted at rest** | Uses `dbcrypt_keys` (same pattern as
`chat_providers.api_key`) |

## Tests

8 test functions covering:
- Full CRUD lifecycle (create, list, update, delete)
- Non-admin visibility filtering (enabled-only, field redaction)
- `auth_connected` population for OAuth2 vs non-OAuth2 servers
- Availability policy validation (valid values + invalid rejection)
- Unique slug enforcement (409 Conflict)
- OAuth2 disconnect idempotency
- Chat creation with `mcp_server_ids` persistence

## Known Limitations (Deferred)

These are documented and intentional for an experimental feature:
- **Audit logging** not yet wired — will add when feature stabilizes
- **Cross-field validation** (e.g., OAuth2 fields required when
`auth_type=oauth2`) — admin-only endpoint, will add when stabilizing
- **`force_on` auto-injection** — query exists but not yet wired into
chatd tool injection (follow-up)
- **Additional test coverage** — 403 auth tests, GET-by-ID tests,
callback CSRF tests planned for follow-up

## What's NOT in this PR

- Frontend UI (admin panel + chat picker)
- Actual MCP client connections (`chatd/chatmcp/` manager)
- Tool injection into `chatloop/`
