fix: bound request body size on JSON API endpoints (#28168)
## Summary `httpapi.Read` decoded request bodies with no size limit, so a single request could allocate memory without bound. This adds a 4 MiB default ceiling, leaves the endpoints that legitimately need more explicitly exempted, and counts the rejections so a limit set too tight is visible. This is the first of three PRs split out of #28048, covering the endpoints that answer in `codersdk.Response` shape. The OAuth2 decode paths (RFC 6749, RFC 7591) and the SCIM ones (RFC 7644) answer in their own error shapes and follow in separate PRs, along with the lint rule that pins the invariant. Closes PLAT-463. Remediates SEC-416 (CWE-770, CVSS 7.5) and SEC-392. ## Problem `httpapi.Read` calls `json.NewDecoder(r.Body).Decode(value)` with no ceiling, and no middleware in the chain bounds body size. The exposure is pre-authentication: login, OTP, and first-user creation all read a body before any authorization decision is reached. The existing rate limiter bounds request *rate*, which is orthogonal to the memory a single admitted request may consume. ## Fix `Read` is split into `Read` and `ReadLimit`. `ReadLimit` wraps `r.Body` in an `http.MaxBytesReader` and keeps the existing decode and validate logic; `Read` delegates to it with a new `DefaultMaxRequestBodyBytes` of 4 MiB, which covers the 124 remaining non-test callers at a single site. `http.MaxBytesReader` composes as tightest-wins, so the handlers that pre-wrapped their own bodies pass their limit to `ReadLimit` rather than wrapping, and each keeps its previous ceiling byte for byte. That matters most for the bulk secrets import at `8 * MaxSecretsFileBytes`: an unconditional wrap inside `Read` would have silently halved it to the default. `TestImportUserSecretsBodyLargerThanDefaultLimit` is the regression guard for that specific failure, and `TestMaxBytesReaderNesting` pins the composition behavior the whole requirement rests on. Every rejection site calls `httpapi.RecordRequestBodyLimit`, which names the limit that tripped on the request's existing log line and marks the request so `coderd_api_requests_too_large_total{reason="request_body"}` counts body rejections apart from the 413s coderd answers for other causes, such as agent log storage overflow. A limit set too tight for a legitimate payload therefore surfaces without waiting for a user report. The limit is a constant rather than a deployment option: an operator raising it to unblock something would reopen the vulnerability as configuration, where a security scan will not find it. A legitimate 413 is answered with a targeted `ReadLimit` on that endpoint. ## Behavior change `POST /api/v2/files` now answers 413 rather than 400 when a request body exceeds `HTTPFileMaxBytes`. It installed that bound already but reported the rejection as a read failure, which leaked the stdlib `http: request body too large` string through `Detail` and kept the largest limit in the tree off the metric. The separate 413 for an oversized expanded archive is unchanged. The task log snapshot endpoint now answers 413 rather than 400 when its 64 KiB cap is exceeded. Routing it through `ReadLimit` also changes its decode-failure message from "Failed to decode request payload." to "Request body must be valid JSON.", which is what every other endpoint answers. Its tests are updated to match both. `coderd_api_requests_too_large_total` is new, so there is no existing query to migrate. It counts the 413s coderd answers, labeled `method`, `path`, and `reason`. `reason="request_body"` is a rejection by one of the limits above; `reason="other"` is a 413 that has nothing to do with body size, such as agent log storage overflow. ## Reading this The commits are ordered to be read in sequence. Commits 1 and 2 are the security fix; commits 3 to 5 are the observability consequences, and commit 3 is the one that touches dashboards. Commit 7 documents the limit on the REST API reference index. Commits 6 and 8 add and revert an exhaustive `@Failure 413` annotation pass, which buried the fix under its regenerated swagger, and cancel out. |

feat: extend agent chat MCP tools for remote UAT evidence loops (#28233)
Extends the Agent-chat MCP tools so an unattended UAT evidence loop can
fetch artifacts, monitor long runs, and find prior runs without burning
model context.
## Backend
- New `chat_files_token` crypto key feature (migration 000571) with
rotator support and a dedicated signing keycache on coderd.
- `POST /api/experimental/chats/files/{file}/download-url`
(authenticated) mints a short-lived (5 min) signed URL and returns it
with `sha256`, `size_bytes`, `name`, `mime_type`, and `expires_at`.
- `GET /api/experimental/chats/files/{file}/download?token=` (no session
token) redeems the signed URL: verifies the JWS, requires the token's
`file_id` to match the path, and re-checks the minting user's RBAC
access live at redemption. Clients can `curl -o` artifacts with zero
credentials in the URL consumer.
- `ChatFileMetadata` gains `size_bytes` (via `octet_length`, no bytes
fetched).
## MCP tools (`codersdk/toolsdk`)
- `coder_download_chat_file`: by `file_id` or `chat_id`+`file_name`;
returns the signed URL plus checksum and size instead of base64.
- `coder_await_chat`: blocks (bounded `wait_secs`, 1-120) until a chat
leaves `running`/`interrupting`, using the existing watch stream with
subscribe-before-read.
- `coder_list_chats`: label, query, and limit filtering; chat
projections now include labels.
- `coder_get_chat_messages`: `after_id` forward cursor with
`next_after_id` (exact incremental reads), plus per-message `files`
metadata so artifact-bearing messages are identifiable.
- `coder_get_chat`: file listings now include `size_bytes` and
`created_at`.
- `coder_list_templates`: exposes `agents_allowed` for pre-flight
checks.
## Testing
- coderd: mint/redeem happy path with an unauthenticated client,
expired/tampered/file-mismatched tokens, auth still required on the
plain file endpoint, non-owner mint rejection.
- toolsdk: harness + integration coverage for all new/changed tools,
including signed-URL redemption with checksum verification,
forward-cursor exactness, await transition/timeout paths, and label
filtering.
- Remote dogfood UAT (dev.coder.com Coder Agent) passed all six
acceptance scenarios end to end over both MCP transports.
Note: `go test ./codersdk/toolsdk/` has a pre-existing goleak flake on
main (leaked `agentssh` non-PTY session goroutines from SSH exec tests;
reproduced 3/3 on clean `b4971bc49f1`). It is unrelated to this diff.

feat: limit concurrent chat agents with pooled admission (#27902)
Limits concurrent chat generation on capped deployments to 5 root chats and 10 delegated subagent chats. The pools are deployment-wide and independent, so delegated work can continue while root capacity is full. The default caps live in AGPL code. Enterprise contributes only a licensing unlock, so unlicensed deployments stay capped and cannot fail open. Licensed deployments are uncapped while Agent Hours usage stays below an explicit hard limit. Deployments without a hard limit remain uncapped, and reaching the Agent Hours allocation only triggers warnings. Admission happens before a worker takes chat ownership. Capped deployments serialize admission across replicas with a transaction-scoped advisory lock and derive active and queued state from current ownership plus fresh runner heartbeats, rather than persisted queue markers or per-replica state. The acquisition query returns a bounded, pool-interleaved candidate set instead of ranking the whole backlog; a migration replaces the acquisition index with a pool-aware one. Refused chats stay running but unowned, and interrupt requests bypass admission so users can stop queued or over-cap chats. The single-chat API derives `queued_for_capacity` from live pool state; list endpoints do not report it. The UI polls that value every 5 seconds while a chat is running and shows a callout when the chat is waiting for capacity. Updates the administrator documentation and deployment-wide Prometheus gauges for active and queued agents. Replica-level values must be aggregated with `max`, not `sum`. > Mux updated this PR on Mike's behalf. |

feat: make CLI/API doc generators emit front-matter metadata (Phase 2) (#27246)
## Summary
Phase 2 of the H1 → front-matter migration (`DOCS-483`; parent
`DOCS-477`). Makes the two reference-doc generators emit per-page
metadata as YAML front matter instead of a leading `# H1`, so generated
pages are self-describing and `make gen` stops reverting migrated pages
(Phase 3).
Phase 1 (`DOCS-482`) made the coder.com renderers prefer a front-matter
`title` (manifest fallback).
> [!NOTE]
> Rebased onto `main` and fully regenerated, and updated across two
rounds of Coder Agents Review — see **Review follow-ups** below.
## Changes
- **`scripts/clidocgen/command.tpl` + `gen.go` + `main.go`** — front
matter now carries `title` (from `fullName`) and `description` (from the
command's `Short`), and the leading `# H1` is dropped. The CLI index
page's front matter is taken from the manifest `Command Line` route
(title/description/icon_path).
- **`scripts/apidocgen/postprocess/main.go`** — reads the manifest and,
at write time, injects front matter carrying each section's `title` plus
any curated `description`, `state`, and `icon_path`. The API index
page's front matter is taken from the manifest `REST API` route.
- **`scripts/docgenenv`** (new shared code) — one `YAMLScalar`
front-matter escaper, one `Route`/`Manifest` schema +
`LoadManifest`/`FindRoute`, and one `FrontMatter(Route)` emitter, all
imported by both generators (no duplicated helpers, types, or emitters).
- Regenerated all **166 CLI + 31 API** reference pages.
### Metadata → front matter, and what stays in the manifest
Every *per-page* manifest field is mirrored into the page's front
matter: `title`, `description`, `state`, `icon_path`. The **structural**
fields stay in `manifest.json`:
- `children` — the nav tree (explicitly out of scope).
- `path` — the manifest's pointer to the file; a page carrying its own
path is redundant/error-prone, so it's treated like `children`.
The fields are **duplicated** into front matter and **`manifest.json` is
left unchanged**, so this is a **no-op for rendering today** (coder.com
strips front matter for `llms`, and Algolia + the renderer read only
`title`). Removing the fields from the manifest is the natural
follow-up, gated on the renderer reading them from front matter first.
### Why the API side changes the postprocessor, not the `.dot` templates
The issue text suggested editing
`scripts/apidocgen/markdown-template/*`. I deliberately did **not**,
because the postprocessor derives each page's **filename, section title,
and manifest route** from the leading `# {name}` line
(`extractSectionName`). Emitting front matter from the template would
break that extraction. Instead the widdershins templates still emit `#
{name}`, the postprocessor reads it (and now verifies it), and then
swaps the heading for a front-matter block as each section is written.
## Review follow-ups (Coder Agents Review)
### Round 1 — addressed in `e53d5e03` (all threads resolved)
- **CRF-1 / CRF-4** — de-duplicated the escaper and the
`route`/`manifest` schema + traversal into `scripts/docgenenv` (shared
by both generators).
- **CRF-2** — `YAMLScalar` now quotes YAML-reserved scalars
(`true/false/null/…`, numbers); no current value is affected.
- **CRF-3** — added unit tests: a `YAMLScalar` round-trip, `FindRoute`,
and `prependFrontMatter`.
- **CRF-5** — the CLI and API **index** pages now mirror their manifest
route's title/description/icon_path instead of a hardcoded
`coder`/`API`, fixing a rendered-heading regression (`REST API`/`Command
Line` were being overwritten).
- **CRF-6** — dropped the dead `#login` anchor in
`docs/support/support-bundle.md` (the migrated `login.md` no longer
mints that heading anchor).
- **CRF-7 / CRF-8 / CRF-11** — renamed to `prependFrontMatter`, switched
to `bytes.Cut`, and it now strips the first line only when it is the `#
{name}` heading (`extractSectionName` errors otherwise).
- **CRF-9** — removed the orphan `docs/reference/api/chat.md` (not in
the manifest, not linked; the real page is `chats.md`).
- **CRF-10** — the metadata read and the manifest rewrite now share one
`FindRoute` traversal.
- **CRF-13** — moot under squash-merge; this branch is a single
scopeless commit.
- **CRF-15** — the pre-existing `sort.Slice`/`slices.IsSorted`
comparator is left as-is per the review (out of scope; safe today
because section names are unique).
### Round 2 — addressed in `ee796e7107` (all threads resolved)
- **CRF-16** (P1) — removed three em-dashes from new doc comments (the
only `make lint` failure on the prior head); the emdash gate is green.
- **CRF-17 / CRF-18** — unified front-matter emission into one shared
`docgenenv.FrontMatter(Route)`, used by the API postprocessor directly
and by `command.tpl` via a `frontMatter` template func. This retires the
hand-written template YAML and the
`indexTitle`/`indexDescription`/`indexIconPath` closures, so a new
front-matter field is wired in one place, and it gives the CLI index the
`state` arm it previously lacked. Verified byte-identical: a full CLI +
API regen produces zero page changes.
- **CRF-19** — CLI child sort switched to `slices.SortFunc` +
`cmp.Compare` (typed comparator).
- **CRF-20** — reworded the `prependFrontMatter` comment:
`extractSectionName`'s fail-fast is the load-bearing guard; the prefix
check is a defensive backstop.
- **CRF-21** — added `icon_path`/`state` coverage in `docgenenv`'s
`TestFrontMatter/AllFields` (the branch the index page relies on,
previously at 0%).
- **CRF-22** — `YAMLScalar` no longer emits a trailing-space value as a
bare scalar (YAML strips it on read, so it would not round-trip); added
test coverage.
- **CRF-24** — the shared emitter removed the duplicated `cliIndexRoute`
doc comment; the rationale now lives in one place.
- **CRF-23** (Phase 3, out of scope here) — noted: the API generator
wipes and regenerates `reference/api/` from the manifest, so removing
curated metadata from the manifest in Phase 3 needs another source first
(a generator that preserves existing front matter, or metadata carried
alongside the swagger annotations).
- **Process (Mafu-san)** — the verification set below now leads with
`make lint`, the mandatory CI gate that the earlier list omitted.
## Cross-repo dependency
**Resolved — this PR no longer has a hard merge-ordering gate** (CRF-14
was right; the earlier "must merge after #968" note was stale).
The coder.com surfaces that would otherwise leak raw front matter from
`coder/coder` `main` are already front-matter-aware on merged PRs:
- **coder.com#964** (`DOCS-554`, llms-full.txt corpus + Algolia) —
**merged**.
- **coder.com#974** (`DOCS-574`, the `.md` proxy twin + `llms.txt` index
titles) — **merged**.
coder.com#968 (`DOCS-577`) was re-scoped to only the renderer
route-metadata generalization; it's a no-op on today's corpus and its
own description confirms the "deploy before the generators" constraint
no longer applies (that was driven by the llms corpus, now in #964).
Worth a final confirmation that #964/#974 are **deployed** before merge,
but there's no branch/PR ordering blocker left.
## Verification & evidence
AI was the primary author of this PR (see disclosure below); per the [AI
Contribution
Guidelines](https://coder.com/docs/about/contributing/AI_CONTRIBUTING)
here is manual verification.
- `make lint` (golangci-lint + the emdash gate) passes; `go build` / `go
vet` / `go test` are clean for the generators + `scripts/docgenenv`;
`pnpm check-docs` passes.
- `swagger.json`, `docs.go`, and `manifest.json` are **unchanged** —
metadata is duplicated into front matter; command/section names and
routes did not move.
- The diff is purely additive front matter
(`title`/`description`/`state`/`icon_path`) + the leading H1 removal; no
body reflow. A full CLI + API regen produces **zero** page changes
beyond the two index pages.

chore: add docs inline-HTML linter and backtick generated placeholders (#27399)
## What Adds CI enforcement that fails when docs Markdown contains invalid inline HTML the docs site silently drops or mangles, and fixes the remaining generated-doc placeholders at their source. This is the tooling half of the docs-HTML audit. The hand-written fixes it guards landed in #27298 (kept small and separate so it reviewed fast); this PR carries everything that touches code, CI, or generated output. ## Changes **Linter (`scripts/docshtmlcheck`), wired into `make lint` via `lint/docs-html`.** Markdown-aware: parses each file with goldmark and inspects only raw-HTML nodes, so angle brackets in fenced code blocks, inline code, HTML comments, and `<https://…>` / `<user@host>` autolinks are ignored. Flags swallowed placeholders (`<region>`), void-element end tags (`</br>`), unregistered or incorrectly capitalized component tags (`<Image>`), and unclosed container tags (a `<div class="tabs">` that leaks its wrapper). The one intentional renderer component, `<children>`, is allowed but still balance-checked. **Generator-source placeholder fixes (regenerated via `make gen`).** - `codersdk/chats.go`: backtick `<server>__` in the `ChatContextTool.Name` doc comment (it becomes the Swagger description, so it was swallowed in `reference/api/{chats,schemas}.md`). - `codersdk/deployment.go`: backtick `<region>` in the AWS Bedrock region flag help (swallowed in `reference/cli/server.md`); also updates `coder server --help` output and the golden files. **Temporary allowlist.** `docs/reference/cli/agent-firewall.md`'s `<host>` / `<glob>` come from the external `github.com/coder/boundary` CLI help (still `v0.10.0` on `main`), so they are suppressed on that one file. The suppression is self-clearing: if an allowlisted tag stops appearing on a scanned file, the linter reports `stale-allowlist-entry` and fails until the dead entry is removed, so a dead entry cannot silently mask a later regression of that tag on that page. (An entry whose file is deleted outright is never rescanned, but a missing file yields no findings, so nothing hides behind it either.) ## Review feedback addressed This tool + generator work was reviewed by Coder Agents Review while it was bundled into #27298. Addressed here: - **P1:** tokenize each raw-HTML node as a whole instead of per source line, so a tag whose attributes wrap across lines is no longer torn in half. This fixes both the missed multi-line unclosed `<div>` (a leaked wrapper that passed with exit 0) and the spurious `stray-end-tag` on valid multi-line tags. Each token maps back to its own source line. - Normalize allowlist lookup/report paths to a canonical repo-relative form, so the escape hatch no longer silently misses under absolute / `./` paths. - Route generated-page findings to the generator source. - Add `<search>` to the allowed set; reword the unknown-element message to note that a real element can be added to `allowedElements`. - Self-clearing allowlist guard (above); rename `optionalEndTag(s)` and `kindUnclosed(Tag)`; adopt `slices`/`maps` idioms; move the lint banner to the Makefile recipe; stop aliasing the input slice in `filterAllowed`. - New tests: multi-line tokenization (both classes), interleaved nesting, a pinned line number, `collectMarkdown`, and the stale-allowlist guard. ### Round 2 (Coder Agents Review on this PR) A second `/coder-agents-review` pass on this PR raised 16 findings; addressed in `fix(docshtmlcheck): catch self-closing containers and capitalized tags`: - **P2:** self-closing container tags (`<div class="tabs"/>`) were ignored by the HTML5 parser and leaked their wrapper like the open spelling; the balance check now tracks self-closing tokens too (CRF-1). - **P2:** a capitalized component tag whose lowercase name is a real element (`<Table>`, `<Section>`) slipped through on the `allowedElements` lookup. The tokenizer lowercases tag names, so the check now reads the raw token and reports any capitalized name as a component reference (CRF-2). - Narrowed the `:` / `@` autolink skip to a real URI scheme or a dotted `local@domain`, so `<region:id>` and `<user@host>` stay checked (CRF-3). - Stale-allowlist findings now report against the linter source with no line, and count separately from invalid-HTML issues in the footer (CRF-7, CRF-11). - Comment / README / Makefile wording synced to the honest capitalized-tag behavior; added the deleted-file allowlist caveat and a note that `allowedElements` is hand-maintained against the renderer (CRF-14, CRF-17, CRF-9). - Internal cleanups (`pop` -> `matchEndTag`, extracted `unclosedFinding`) and new tests: self-closing, capitalized open/close, colon/at placeholders, a non-first-token line assertion, `isGeneratedDoc`, and the stale message (CRF-12, CRF-13, CRF-1/2/3/4/5/16). Two findings resolved without a code change: - **CRF-8** (also wire `lint/docs-html` into `lint-light`): declined. `lint-light` is the Go-free fast path; `lint/docs-html` needs the Go toolchain, so it stays in the full `make lint`, which CI runs. Adding it would pull Go into the light path for no coverage gain. - **CRF-9** (`allowedElements` <-> renderer coupling): documented with a maintenance note in the `allowedElements` comment and tracked in DOCS-597 for a cross-repo sync/check decision. Deferred (note, no current trigger): raw-text element interiors (`<script>` / `<style>`) are not scanned for nested tags. No docs page relies on this today; noted for follow-up. ## Merge order #27298 (the hand-written fixes this PR guards) has merged, and this branch is rebased on `main`, so `make lint/docs-html` now reports 0 findings and the `lint` check passes. The two PRs are independent (disjoint files, no stacking). ## Verification - `go test ./scripts/docshtmlcheck/`, `go vet`, `gofmt -l`, `golangci-lint run`: clean. - `make lint/docs-html` (branch rebased on `main`): 0 findings. ## Linear - DOCS-584: https://linear.app/codercom/issue/DOCS-584/add-ci-check-that-fails-on-invalid-inline-html-in-docs - DOCS-551: https://linear.app/codercom/issue/DOCS-551/backtick-placeholder-syntax-in-generated-reference-docs-cli-help - DOCS-597 (follow-up, from CRF-9): https://linear.app/codercom/issue/DOCS-597/track-docshtmlcheck-allowedelements-drift-vs-docs-renderer-component > This PR was created with AI assistance (Coder Agents). |

feat: show what a chat lifecycle hook changed (#27655)
## Stack Context Follow-up fixes from live UAT of the merged chat lifecycle hooks stack (#27430). Two PRs: 1. **This PR**: make hook effects visible and correctly attributed in the transcript. 2. [`mike/chat-hooks-uat/dispatch-capacity`]: reserve dispatch capacity so an admission burst can't fail running turns. ## Why? UAT found three ways the transcript misrepresented what a lifecycle hook did. All three are user-visible and share the same surface (`chathooks/effects.go`, `codersdk.ChatMessagePart`, the conversation timeline), so they're reviewed together. **A prompt `input_override` silently discarded attachments.** `ComposeUserPromptContent` replaced the entire submitted part list with one text part, dropping `file` and `file-reference` parts along with their `chat_file_links`. The user saw their attachments vanish with no explanation. The override now replaces submitted *text* parts only and preserves non-text parts in order. A consumer that wants to block attachments uses `deny`, which is the documented mechanism for refusing a submission. **Every user-visible `system` row was labelled "Lifecycle hook".** The timeline keyed the notice off `role === "system"`. That was correct only by accident, because the hook `user_message` was the sole client-visible system row. The backend now emits the notice as a typed `hook-notice` part and the timeline renders on that, so a future system row can't be mislabelled as a policy notice. **Nothing marked a tool call the hook had rewritten.** A consumer could replace tool input via `input_override` and the transcript showed the rewritten input as if the model had produced it. `ChatMessagePart` gains `hook_rewritten`, set from `preflight.Overrides` on the same path that already carries `ToolCallCreatedAt`, and the tool row renders a "Modified by policy" badge. `ToolCall.PolicyProvider` renders the badge itself, at four wrap sites: the `Tool` dispatch wrapper, the `ReadFilesTool` aggregate and its per-file rows, and `ReadFileTimelineBlock` (grouped and single `read_file` rows bypass `Tool`). Renderer props do not include the flag; descendants consume it through the provider context. The badge is emitted by the provider rather than by the shared header because several renderer branches return early without one, including the auth-required `execute` card, a completed `ask_user_question`, and an empty question payload. Those branches would drop the attribution with no type or runtime error, and the gap is not greppable: every renderer file contains a header somewhere, only individual branches do not. Emitting at the provider removes the possibility instead of enumerating the cases. A rewritten call is wrapped in a group labelled by its badge, so one rewritten file inside a merged read is attributed on its own rather than inheriting the group's badge. `HeaderButton` still appends the policy wording to an explicit `ariaLabel`, since an explicit `aria-label` replaces the name computed from descendants. Provider-executed calls are excluded from attribution. Hooks never see them, and duplicate tool-call ID rejection deliberately skips them, so a reused ID would otherwise mark a provider-executed call as policy-rewritten. ## Testing Go: `coderd/x/chatd/...`, `coderd/x/agenthooks/...`, `codersdk/...`, and `coderd -run 'Hook|Chat'`. Frontend: `tsc` plus every `AgentsPage` story; the only failures are `MCP Tool Completed` and `Scroll To Bottom Button Works With Inverse Scroll`, both of which fail on trunk. A registry-wide story asserts every registered renderer shows the badge, verified against three inverted toggles: removing the badge, hiding it with `display:none`, and skipping the provider for one renderer (which names that renderer). Storybook also covers the rewritten subagent spawn, a completed empty question payload, a non-hook system message, and a failed `read_file` guarding the accessible name. > Mux opened this PR on Mike's behalf. |

feat: back the per-chat cost endpoint with AI Gateway data (#27328)
## Stack Context
This stack removes native chat cost tracking and native chat usage
limits, making the AI Gateway the single source of AI spend data and
budget enforcement.
1. **This PR:** re-back the per-chat cost endpoint with AI Gateway data.
2. Remove native chat usage limits end to end, rewiring the sidebar
indicator to gateway spend.
3. Remove native chat cost tracking end to end, deleting the
Analytics/Spend cost UI.
## What?
`GET /api/experimental/chats/{chat}/cost` summed
`chat_messages.total_cost_micros`, which native chat cost tracking
maintained. It now aggregates AI Gateway interception data instead, and
has no native fallback.
- New `GetAIBridgeChatCost` query, authorized through the root chat so
members can read their own chat's cost without gaining access to raw
interception rows.
- Response fields renamed: `priced_message_count` -> `request_count`,
`unpriced_messages_having_usage_count` -> `unpriced_request_count`.
- The chat summary sidebar keys its cost cache by root chat, and hides
the cost row where the AI Gateway is off or unlicensed. The root cost is
invalidated when a chat leaves an active status and when a generated
title lands, since title generation bills its own gateway request.
`GetChatModelUsageCostByChatID` and the rest of native cost tracking are
untouched here; PR 3 removes them.
## Why?
Native cost tracking duplicates what the AI Gateway already records, and
the two disagree. Repointing the endpoint first means the cost UI keeps
working while the native implementation is deleted later in the stack.
Two behaviour changes follow from gateway semantics and are intentional:
- **Requests, not messages.** The gateway records interceptions, so
counts are requests. Title-generation traffic now counts.
- **Whole-tree totals.** The gateway records the *spawning* chat's ID as
the interception session ID, so a subagent's requests are attributed to
its immediate parent, not always the root. Only a whole chat tree can be
summed, so the query resolves the root and aggregates the tree, and
every chat in a tree reports the same total. Native returned per-subtree
totals.
## Attribution and counting semantics
The aggregate groups token usage per interception before counting, so
the reported numbers are per request even though a request records one
usage row per provider response:
- `RequestCount` counts finished `Coder Agents` interceptions in the
tree, including unpriced ones.
- `UnpricedRequestCount` counts requests with at least one usage row the
gateway could not price. It is a subset of `RequestCount`.
- `TotalCostMicros` omits only unpriced usage, so a partially priced
request still contributes its priced portion. The sidebar therefore says
`Excludes unpriced usage from N request(s)` rather than claiming whole
requests were dropped.
A recorded cost of zero is a free request, not an unpriced one. Usage
without an effective group is excluded, matching what never reached
`ai_user_daily_spend`.
## Authorization
Reads go through `ExtractChatParam` plus `ResourceChat`, with no
cost-specific RBAC widening. `TestGetChatCost/MemberCanReadOwnChat`
covers a scoped `agents-access` member reading their own chat's cost,
and `MemberCannotReadOtherUsersChat` still asserts 404 for a non-owner.
Plain members without `agents-access` cannot create or read chats at
all, so they never reach this endpoint.
## Known limitation
AI Gateway data has its own retention period, 60 days by default and
configured independently of chat retention, so spend for requests older
than that is no longer reported. A chat whose gateway records have all
been purged reports zero cost, which is indistinguishable from genuinely
free usage under this contract. The endpoint documents the caveat;
#27330 documents it on the Spend Management page.
In-flight interceptions are excluded, since cost is only known once the
response is recorded. A chat's cost therefore lags the active turn by
one request.
## Rebase note
Rebased onto `main` after #27579 removed the `ai-gateway-cost-control`
experiment. The per-chat cost row is now gated on the `aibridge` feature
alone, matching how #27579 degated the other cost-control surfaces.

feat: wire chat lifecycle hooks into chatd (#27429)
Wires chat lifecycle hooks into chatd, gated by the `agent-lifecycle-hooks` experiment. Part of the lifecycle hooks stack (#27401, #27428, #27430). See `docs/admin/setup/chat-lifecycle-hooks.md` for the consumer-facing contract. ## Summary When a hook URL is configured, chatd dispatches `session_start`, `user_prompt_submit`, `pre_tool_use`, `post_tool_use`, `pre_compact`, `post_compact`, and `stop` events to the consumer and applies its responses. ## Design - **Stateless**: Coder stores no hook dispatch or decision state. Delivery is at least once; consumers deduplicate on stable payload identifiers (chat ID, event type, tool-use ID) and answer duplicates with the same decision. - **Admission-time prompt effects**: `user_prompt_submit` dispatches exactly once per submission (create, send, queue, edit, subagent spawn) and folds its effects into the stored prompt as typed message parts: original-or-overridden user parts, then model-only `hook-context`, then a user-visible `hook-notice`. Hook context is stripped from every client-facing conversion; hook notices are excluded from model prompts. The server rejects hook parts in client-submitted content. - **Tool gating**: `pre_tool_use` allow can override tool input; deny becomes a synthetic denied tool result, with any returned model context persisted as a model-only transcript row so it never reaches clients. The denial text identifies an external policy (the deployment's lifecycle hook) as the source and marks the decision as persistent, so the model explains the denial instead of retrying it or misreporting it as an infrastructure failure. - **Fail closed**: a dispatch failure rejects the triggering request or moves the chat to the error state in the same transaction as the affected step, so a runnable state is never published with unapproved content. - **Admission before persistence**: `pre_tool_use` is dispatched for the calls the model produced, before the assistant message is stored. See "Staged tool admission" below. - **Fresh dispatch per tool call**: every non-provider-executed tool call is decided by its own `pre_tool_use` dispatch; Coder never reuses an earlier decision on the consumer's behalf. Retries re-dispatch the same logical event. ## Structure All hook dispatch flows through one seam: entry points build a `chathooks.Chat` (chat identity) and a `chathooks.Message` (event details) and call `Trigger.Trigger`, the only component that talks to the dispatcher. The integration lives in the `coderd/x/chatd/chathooks` subpackage, split by responsibility: - `trigger.go`: the trigger seam; builds the wire envelope per event, normalizes deny into a typed error, and holds the package's single enabled-check. - `effects.go`: pure conversion of hook results into transcript rows and prompt parts. - `errors.go`: failure classification (dispatch error messages, denial mapping, tool-result dispatch-failure scanning). - `tooluse.go`: the tool-call gate (`pre_tool_use` preflight, `post_tool_use` payloads, applying admitted input to the step). Server-bound glue stays in `coderd/x/chatd/hook_server.go`: the chat-parking dispatch error handlers, the step-commit row insertion wrappers, and the dynamic post-tool-use state loader, which depends on chatd validation types. This PR adopts the `codersdk/x/agenthooks` and `coderd/x/agenthooks/dispatch` import paths introduced at the tip of #27401; intermediate commits still reference the pre-move paths and are not individually buildable. ## Staged tool admission `pre_tool_use` originally ran at tool execution time, which is after the assistant message carrying the tool call was already committed. An `input_override` therefore had to rewrite stored message content in place. @hugodutka pointed out that chatd treats message content as immutable, and that the rewrite was a shortcut rather than a requirement. It was also a correctness problem in its own right: the rewrite only updated the database, so the transcript could show one input while a different one had executed. The hook now runs before the step is persisted: ```text provider stream ends (tool calls complete, in memory) -> pre_tool_use dispatch per call -> ONE transaction: assistant row with admitted inputs, synthetic denials, hook rows -> execute ``` The step is inserted once, carrying the input the tool runs with. `UpdateChatMessageContentByID` and `Tx.UpdateMessageContent` are deleted from #27428, so message content stays immutable. Two consequences, both intentional: - **Clients converge rather than wait.** Tool-call parts still stream live, so a rewritten call briefly shows the model's proposed input before the committed message replaces it. The chat store already clears stream state when an assistant message arrives, so the stored input wins with no frontend change and no added latency before tool cards appear. - **A call already in history was already admitted.** Execution consumes the stored input instead of dispatching a second decision, which keeps one dispatch and one set of hook effects per call. A consumer policy change between admission and execution applies to later calls, not to calls already admitted. The per-chat debug endpoint still records the provider's original tool input. Its purpose is to report provider behavior, and it requires an explicit per-chat debug flag; the invariant here covers the transcript. ## Configuration Adds `chat-hook-url`, `chat-hook-secret`, `chat-hook-timeout`, and `chat-hook-enabled` deployment options with startup validation. The flags are hidden from `coder server --help` while the feature is experimental; the setup guide documents them. ## Tool input validation Built-in tool arguments reach a consumer as raw JSON with key spelling preserved, but the tools decode those bytes with Go, which matches struct fields case-insensitively and keeps the last match. A policy reading `path` could therefore authorize one value while the tool executed another, and a lone case variant such as `{"PATH":"/secret"}` was invisible to a policy checking for `path`. Coder now rejects a built-in tool call whose input repeats a key or spells a schema property with different capitalization, before the `pre_tool_use` dispatch, so a consumer is never asked to authorize bytes whose meaning depends on the reader. Rejected calls produce an error result the model can retry; unambiguous calls in the same batch still run. A consumer-authored `input_override` is rechecked after the dispatch and fails the turn closed, because the model cannot correct it. Dynamic and MCP inputs are excluded because the client and the workspace agent execute those calls rather than coderd. Two paths needed more than a schema check. Execution resolves a deprecated tool name to its canonical tool, so validation resolves aliases first. The `edit_files` decoder also reads `search` and `replace`, which its schema does not advertise, so those aliases are now matched exactly and their case variants ignored. A hook denial now returns a structured 403 carrying `kind: "hook_denied"`, mirroring the dispatch-failure response that already carries its own kind. Without it a client cannot tell a policy decision apart from a generic failure, and the chat UI titled a denial "Request failed". Adding a kind needs no migration: `ChatErrorKind` is persisted only inside the JSONB `chats.last_error` column, whose decoder accepts unknown kinds. The hook docs also correct the tool-input convergence window. A batch dispatches sequentially before the assistant row commits, so the original input stays visible for a span that scales with the number of tool calls in the step rather than a single hook timeout. > This PR was written by Mux, an AI coding agent, on Mike's behalf. |

feat: add chat summary tab in the right sidebar and per-chat cost endpoint (#26649)
Stacked on #26657 (the persisted whole-chat summary backend). Base branch is `chat-summary-62j9`; review/merge that first. Adds a reusable `ChatSummary` component. The summary text is the persisted whole-chat summary (`chat.summary`) introduced by #26657. It is generated asynchronously and may be `null` until the first summary is produced, in which case the popover renders a muted empty state. Live updates arrive via that PR's `chat_summary_change` watch event, which is already merged into the chat caches. Cost is served by a new per-chat endpoint, `GET /api/experimental/chats/{chat}/cost`, which rolls up assistant-message cost across a chat's root and child (subagent) chats and is authorized like the other `{chat}` routes (read on the chat, 404 otherwise). Visual and interaction coverage lives in `ChatSummary.stories.tsx` and `ChatSummaryPopover.stories.tsx` (including populated-summary, empty-state, and cost-loading cases). --------- Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com> |

feat: add persisted whole-chat summary with background generation (#26657)
Adds a persisted whole-chat summary that backs the chat summary popover. A new nullable `chats.summary` column is populated in the background after a successful root-chat turn and pushed to clients via a new `chat_summary_change` watch event (distinct from `summary_change`, which is bound to `last_turn_summary`), so the popover reads `chat.summary` straight off the loaded `Chat` with no extra query. This is the data source for the popover and per-chat cost UI built in #26649; the popover can consume `chat.summary` once this lands (the field is nullable, so merge order does not matter). ## How it works - **Generation** runs in the existing successful-turn finalize hook, detached from the request so the user's turn is never blocked. A cadence gate generates the first summary after one completed turn, then regenerates every three turns, using the `chats.summary_generated_at` freshness marker. Generation reads compaction-aware history, renders it to a bounded plain-text transcript (short transcripts are skipped), and asks for a 1-3 sentence summary via structured output. Failures never clear an existing summary. - **Staleness** is guarded by `history_version` (mirroring `last_turn_summary`), so a background write racing a newer turn loses while worker lifecycle transitions cannot reject a fresh write. - **Model selection** uses the chat's configured model. ## Deferred to follow-ups - **Cost accounting**: the `chat_messages.cost_source` discriminator and summary/title usage recording were removed from this PR so summary persistence is not blocked by hidden accounting rows advancing `history_version`. Title usage recording stays on main's `InsertChatMessages` path. - **Model override**: deployment-wide summary generation model selection is split into #26803; the base feature always uses the chat model. ## Notes - Migration `000540` adds `chats.summary` and `chats.summary_generated_at`, and recreates `chats_expanded` to expose the new columns. - Root chats only; shared viewers pick up the summary on their next refetch (live watch events are owner-only). docs: normalize code-fence languages for Shiki compatibility (#27161)
Normalizes non-standard code-fence language tags across `docs/**` so a strict highlighter (Shiki, used by Fumadocs) won't fail the build on an unrecognized language, and unifies redundant synonym tags onto one canonical form per language. The current renderer (Speed-Highlight) detects the language from the code content, not the fence label, so this drift wasn't visible until now. ## Changes - `hcl` -> `tf` (199 fences, including indented ones nested in numbered/bulleted lists). Shiki ships `hcl` and `terraform` as two distinct grammars (not aliases); every `hcl`-tagged fence in `docs/**` is actually Terraform resource/data/provider syntax, so the more specific `terraform` grammar is correct for all of them. `tf` is Shiki's own alias for that grammar, and it's also what GitHub's own markdown renderer resolves to the same HCL/Terraform highlighting. - `pwsh`/`powershell` -> `ps1`. Both `ps` and `ps1` are registered PowerShell aliases in Shiki, but on GitHub's renderer only `.ps1` is a registered file extension (`.ps` isn't), so `ps1` renders identically to `powershell` there today while bare `ps` would silently lose highlighting. - `env` -> `dotenv` (a dedicated Shiki grammar for `KEY=VALUE` files) - `text`/`output`/`none`/`url` -> `txt`. Same built-in plain-text fallback either way, just shorter. - `Dockerfile` -> `dockerfile` (lowercase) - `bash`/`shell` -> `sh` (732 fences). Shiki and GitHub both alias all three to a single shell grammar; this was already the style guide's stated preference, just not enforced across the existing corpus until now. - `markdown` -> `md` (4 fences). Alias of the same grammar in both Shiki and GitHub. - `jsonc` -> `json` (1 fence). The block has no comments or trailing commas, so it doesn't need the comments-capable grammar. - `ts` -> `tsx` (2 fences, `docs/about/contributing/frontend.md`). Verified the actual content tokenizes identically under both grammars, and a sibling block in the same file already needs `tsx` for real JSX, so unifying to one tag is safe for this file. Documented a caveat: `tsx` mis-tokenizes the legacy angle-bracket type-assertion syntax (`<Type>value`), which is invalid in real `.tsx` files anyway, so use `value as Type` instead. - `yml` -> `yaml` (1 fence) - Updated `docs/.style/style-guide/formatting.md` to document all canonical tags `promql` (2 fences) and `caddyfile` (2 fences) are left as-is. Shiki doesn't bundle a grammar for either, so they need a custom grammar registration when the site adopts Shiki, rather than degrading to `txt`. Tracked as follow-up work under DOCS-118 and [DOCS-544](https://linear.app/codercom/issue/DOCS-544/vendor-a-local-promql-grammar-for-shiki-syntax-highlighting) (promql). Does not touch `offlinedocs/`. Linear: [DOCS-476](https://linear.app/codercom/issue/DOCS-476/normalize-docs-code-fence-languages-de-risk-shikifumadocs) <details> <summary>How the fence tags were verified</summary> Each tag was tested against a real `shiki@latest` highlighter instance (`codeToHtml`/`codeToTokens`) and cross-checked against GitHub's `@wooorm/starry-night` grammar sources (the renderer that actually displays these `.md` files today, in repo browsing and PR diffs), since that's what determines whether brevity is safe before Shiki adoption: ```text FAIL env -- Language `env` is not included in this bundle. FAIL Dockerfile -- Language `Dockerfile` is not included in this bundle. FAIL promql -- Language `promql` is not included in this bundle. FAIL caddyfile -- Language `caddyfile` is not included in this bundle. FAIL pwsh -- Language `pwsh` is not included in this bundle. FAIL output -- Language `output` is not included in this bundle. ``` `hcl` doesn't error in Shiki, since it's a real grammar, but that's exactly the trap: it was silently rendering every fence with the generic HCL grammar instead of the Terraform-specific one. Every `hcl`-tagged fence in `docs/**` was manually checked against `origin/main` and is genuinely Terraform content. For `ts`/`tsx`, tokenizing the actual doc content confirmed identical output under both grammars; a synthetic test with the legacy angle-bracket cast syntax confirmed `tsx` degrades on that specific construct, which the style guide now calls out. The first normalization pass only matched fence tags at column 0 (`^```tag$`), missing tags indented inside numbered/bulleted lists. A follow-up pass caught the remaining occurrences at any indentation level. </details> --- *This PR description and the underlying changes were prepared with Coder Agents assistance.* |

docs: wrap placeholder syntax in backticks in CLI help and swagger annotations (#27194)
## Problem
Generated reference docs (`docs/reference/cli/*`,
`docs/reference/api/*`) contained raw placeholder and JSON syntax that
came straight from Go CLI help strings and swagger annotations. HTML
renderers treat the angle-bracket tokens (`<team-slug>`, `<uuid>`,
`<KEY>`, etc.) as unknown tags and drop them, so readers see
broken/half-missing text today. The same strings also break MDX parsing.
## Fix
Wrap the placeholder/JSON syntax in backticks **at the source** (Go help
strings and swagger annotation comments), then `make gen`. Rendered docs
now show the placeholders as inline code instead of dropping them.
### Source changes
| File | Placeholder wrapped | Surfaces in |

Everything else in the diff (`coderd/apidoc/*`, `docs/reference/**`,
`*.golden`, `site/src/api/typesGenerated.ts`) is `make gen` output.
## Reviewer notes (the "considered pass" from the ticket)
- **Product-visible:** this changes `coder server --help` and `coder
tokens create --help` output, and the `server-config.yaml` reference
comment. Backticks in terminal help are literal but read fine as
placeholder markers.
- **Settings UI:** the `deployment.go` `Description` also renders in the
deployment settings page. If that field is not Markdown-rendered,
literal backticks will show there. Happy to drop the `deployment.go`
change if you'd rather keep the UI text clean and fix `server.md`
another way.
- **Out of scope here:** `docs/reference/cli/agent-firewall.md`
(`<host>`/`<glob>`) is generated from the external
`github.com/coder/boundary` module, not this repo. It needs an upstream
fix + module bump; not included in this PR.
<details>
<summary>Implementation notes / decision log</summary>
- Scope taken from DOCS-551: source-level backtick pass for generated
reference docs only. Hand-written Markdown fixes are tracked separately
(companion ticket).
- Swagger `@Param` descriptions are Go comments, so the existing `\|`
pipe-escaping in the chats `q` filter is preserved inside the new
backticks (still required for the Markdown table cell to render `|`).
- Verified after `make gen`: generated docs render placeholders as code
spans, table pipes intact; `gofmt` clean; changed Go packages build; no
emdash/endash introduced.
- Deliberately left the `AIProviderConfig` type-level doc comment
untouched because it does not surface in any generated doc (kept the
diff to doc-feeding comments).

not an HTML tag.
- Tokens containing `/` or `|` are escaped by the renderer and stay
visible (as literal `<...>`): `<username/uuid/me>`, `<org-name/uuid>`,
`<owner/repo>`, `<draft|open|merged|closed>`,
`<created_by_me|shared_with_me>`. Backticks still improve their
readability, but they were never dropped.

feat: remove unused chat statuses pending, paused, and completed (#27064)
The chatd state machine only recognizes `waiting`, `running`, `error`, `requires_action`, and `interrupting`. Remove the unused `pending`, `paused`, and `completed` values from the database enum, backend, SDK, frontend, generated queries, and API docs. Migration `000543_chat_status_remove_unused` remaps existing `pending` rows to `running`, remaps `paused` and `completed` rows to `waiting`, drops the obsolete `idx_chats_pending` index, and recreates `chats_expanded` around the enum swap. It also removes the dead `AcquireChats` query and all remaining query literals for the deleted statuses. **NOTE**: The enum swap can break chat queries from older replicas during a mixed-version rollout because they still reference `'pending'::chat_status`. Chats are experimental, so this PR accepts that limited rollout window instead of adding a two-release expand and contract sequence. > This PR was authored by Mux (AI agent) on Mike's behalf. |

fix: stop Agents dead-ending on unsupported providers (#26841)
Configuring only a GitHub Copilot provider left the Agents page stuck on "set up a provider then add a model", even with a provider and models configured. The catalog dropped any provider type that NormalizeProvider did not recognize, so a Copilot-only deployment looked identical to an empty one and never unlocked the page. The Agents harness cannot use Copilot: it needs a per-request token only an official Copilot client can mint, and the harness is not one. Instead of dropping such providers, the catalog now reports them as unsupported so the UI can explain the dead end and point elsewhere, rather than ask for setup that already happened. The providers stay usable through the AI Gateway proxy. Support is derived from the provider type, not stored, so there is no migration. codersdk.IsAgentsUnsupportedProviderType is the single source of truth, consulted by the chatd catalog and, through the generated AgentsUnsupportedProviderTypes list, the frontend. The diff also carries unrelated modernization of nearby db2sdk and chatprovider helpers (slices.SortFunc, strings.Cut, range-over-int). Closes CODAGT-627 Refs CODAGT-256 Refs CODAGT-682 |

refactor: remove legacy live-read and injected-history chat context paths (#26585)
This PR makes the agent-pushed pinned snapshot (`chat_context_resources`) the sole source of workspace context for chats, completing the "Release 5" cleanup. Removed: - **Live-read at turn time.** MCP tool discovery, skill live-body reads, and the instruction/skill history fallback that dialed the workspace on every turn. - **Context injected as message history.** The `persist_workspace_context` generation action and its decision-loop guard. - **The legacy write path.** `POST`/`DELETE /api/v2/workspaceagents/me/experimental/chat-context`, the agentsdk `AddChatContext`/`ClearChatContext` methods, and the CLI one-shot writer. - **The `chats.last_injected_context` column** and all of its plumbing (migration `000529`, queries, `db2sdk`, `dbauthz`, audit table, and the frontend `ContextUsageIndicator` fallback). Subagent context inheritance no longer copies parent context messages; children now hydrate the parent's pinned `chat_context_resources` on create, which yields an identical pin for the same workspace and agent. What stays (still served by the live agent connection, not the snapshot): `read_skill_file` supporting-file reads, `read_skill` supporting-file listing, and MCP tool execution. > [!NOTE] > Migration `000529` drops `chats.last_injected_context` and recreates the `chats_expanded` view without it. The down migration restores both. <details> <summary>Decision log (D1-D5)</summary> - **D1 (subagent inheritance):** Re-point inheritance from the legacy message copy to a pinned hydrate. Children call `hydrateChatContextOnCreate` instead of copying parent context messages. - **D2 (`persist_workspace_context`):** Remove the generation action entirely along with the decision-loop guard it existed to satisfy, since context is never injected into history anymore. - **D3 (legacy HTTP + CLI):** Remove the experimental `chat-context` POST/DELETE endpoints, the agentsdk methods, and the CLI one-shot. The dRPC push + `chat-context/refresh` replace them. - **D4 (frontend fallback):** Remove the `last_injected_context` fallback in `ContextUsageIndicator`; pinned `resources` are the sole source. - **D5 (sequencing):** Ship as a single PR rather than a stacked pair. </details> --- Coder Agents generated on behalf of @kylecarbs. |

feat: report pinned chat context resources on chat API (#26570)
Surfaces a chat's pinned workspace-context resources on the single-chat GET and refresh responses, so clients can show *what* context the prompt was built from, not just whether it drifted. ## What's included - **codersdk**: `ChatContextResource` (plus `ChatContextResourceKind` and `ChatContextResourceStatus`) and `ChatContextMCPTool`, and a new `Chat.Context.Resources` field (metadata only, no bodies). It is populated only on the single-chat GET/refresh response; list and watch payloads stay nil to remain lightweight. - **coderd/x/chatd**: `Server.ContextResources`, which builds the metadata-only list from the chat's pinned `chat_context_resources` rows. Non-OK resources (invalid / unreadable / oversize / excluded) are reported with their status and error so the UI can explain why a resource was dropped from the prompt instead of silently omitting it. The shared protojson body decoders are extracted so the prompt and detail paths reuse them. - **coderd**: `getChat` and `refreshChatContext` enrich the response with the resource list. Failures are non-fatal (the chat stays usable without the detail). ## Scope / what's deferred This is an incremental split from #26466. This PR reports only the **resource inventory**. The pinned-context drift *diff* (the per-source `changes` set and the "View changes" dialog) is intentionally deferred to a later split; the existing `dirty` bit already signals that context changed. MCP resources are reported for display only; they are not injected into the prompt (a future RFC item). <details> <summary>Design notes</summary> - The resource list is the chat's full pinned inventory (instruction files, skills, and MCP configs/servers), preserving the query's `source ASC` order. OK-but-empty instruction files, OK skills with no name, and untracked kinds (reserved plugin/hook/subagent/command) are skipped. - MCP tool names are reported with the agent's `"<server>__"` prefix stripped so they read as the server exposes them. - The detail is computed on read and attached only on the single-chat GET and refresh responses; list and watch payloads omit it to stay lightweight. - `refreshChatContext` enriches its own response (mirroring `getChat`) so the client reflects a refresh immediately, without a full reload. </details> <details> <summary>Testing</summary> - `go test ./coderd/x/chatd/ -run 'TestPinnedContextResources|TestContextResources|TestChatContextDirtyFromAgentPush'` (unit + integration on embedded Postgres) passes. The integration test exercises the GET and refresh enrichment end-to-end. - `go build`, `go vet`, `golangci-lint`, and `gofmt` are clean. - `make gen` regenerated `apidoc`, `swagger.json`, `docs/reference/api/*`, and `typesGenerated.ts`. </details> --- *This PR was created by Coder Agents on behalf of @kylecarbs.* |

docs: clarify Agents vs Chats API reference pages (#26021)
## Problem The REST API reference page at [`/docs/reference/api/agents`](https://coder.com/docs/reference/api/agents) is confusing: by the name alone, a reader looking for the *AI Coder Agents* programmatic API would assume this is the right page. In fact, those endpoints are for the *workspace agent daemon* (the `coder_agent` Terraform resource / `workspaceagent` daemon). The actual AI Coder Agents API is documented at [`/docs/reference/api/chats`](https://coder.com/docs/reference/api/chats). Both pages compound the confusion by being rendered with a bare `# Agents` / `# Chats` heading and no descriptive intro. The sidebar entries are similarly ambiguous (`Agents` and `Chats` with no descriptions). ## Root cause The reference pages are generated by `scripts/apidocgen/generate.sh` (swag → widdershins → postprocess). The widdershins template (`scripts/apidocgen/markdown-template/main.dot`) already renders `data.resource.description` directly under each section heading: ``` <!-- APIDOCGEN: BEGIN SECTION --> {{= data.tags.section }}# {{= r}} {{? data.resource.description }}{{= data.resource.description}}{{?}} ``` …but the swag annotations in `coderd/coderd.go` never declared `@tag.name` / `@tag.description` for any tag, so the descriptions were always empty. ## Changes - `coderd/coderd.go`: add `@tag.name Agents` / `@tag.description …` and `@tag.name Chats` / `@tag.description …` annotations next to the existing `@title` / `@version` block. - `docs/manifest.json`: rename the sidebar entry `Agents` → `Workspace Agents` and add `description` fields to both API sidebar entries (every other top-level section in the manifest has descriptions; the API children did not). - Regenerate `coderd/apidoc/swagger.json`, `coderd/apidoc/docs.go`, `docs/reference/api/agents.md`, and `docs/reference/api/chats.md` via `scripts/apidocgen/generate.sh` + `pnpm exec markdownlint-cli2 --fix` + `pnpm exec markdown-table-formatter` + `scripts/biome_format.sh` (matching the Makefile's `coderd/apidoc/.gen` pipeline). Resulting diff is intentionally minimal — 6 files, 35 insertions / 3 deletions. ## After this PR The Agents page will render: > # Agents > > Workspace agent endpoints. These power the workspace agent daemon defined by the `coder_agent` Terraform resource (sometimes called the workspace daemon). This API is NOT the AI Coder Agents API. For programmatic access to AI Coder Agents (formerly Tasks), see the Chats API. The Chats page will render: > # Chats > > Programmatic API for Coder AI Agents (the user-facing "Coder Agents" / "Chats" product). Experimental. Use these endpoints to create, list, and manage AI coding agent sessions. For background and migration from the Tasks API, see the AI Coder docs. And the sidebar entry for the workspace-agent endpoints becomes `Workspace Agents` instead of `Agents`. ## Out of scope (potential follow-ups) - `docs/reference/api/chat.md` is a 7-byte stub — likely dead. Could be deleted in a follow-up. - Larger rename of the `Agents` Swagger tag (and/or the `coder_agent` Terraform resource) to something like `Workspace Agents` / `workspace_daemon` would more thoroughly fix the naming collision, but that's a much bigger change. feat: integrate agent context snapshots into chats (#26389)
Makes the chat context foundation from #26385 live. That PR added the storage columns, writer queries, and a dormant `agentapi.ContextDirtyMarker` trigger with no production callers; this PR wires them together end to end. When a workspace agent pushes a context snapshot, bound chats now hydrate to that snapshot's hash, and a later push with a different hash flips already-pinned chats to dirty (emitting a `context_dirty` watch event after the transaction commits). Chat creation pins the agent's latest snapshot when one already exists. The experimental chat API exposes this as `Chat.Context` (`*ChatContext` with `dirty`, `dirty_since`, `error`), and a new `PUT /api/experimental/chats/{chat}/context` endpoint re-pins the agent's latest snapshot and clears the dirty marker. `context_dirty_resources` stays NULL (the resource-level diff is deferred to the UI phase) and the live per-turn context pull is unchanged. The end-to-end test provisions a workspace agent via the echo provisioner, connects it over the Agent API v2.10, and exercises the full path: an initial push hydrates a bound chat (clean), a second push with a different hash marks it dirty, the API reports the dirty state, and the refresh endpoint clears it. <details> <summary>Decision log</summary> - **API shape — sub-struct.** Dirty state is surfaced as `codersdk.Chat.Context *ChatContext { Dirty bool; DirtySince *time.Time; Error string }` rather than flat fields, matching the RFC's named `ChatContext` type and leaving room for future fields (resource diff, sources). `db2sdk.Chat` populates it when the chat is context-tracked (`len(ContextAggregateHash) > 0`), dirty, or carries a snapshot error, and leaves it nil (`omitempty`) otherwise. `Dirty` mirrors `context_dirty_since` being set. - **Marker wiring.** The chat daemon is injected directly as the `agentapi.ContextDirtyMarker`. It is unconditionally constructed (only its background worker is gated), so the marker is always non-nil and the wiring matches every other `api.chatDaemon` call site. `agentapi` still treats a nil marker as "chatd absent", so `PushContextState` stays a pure write path for any future caller that does not wire chatd in. - **Refresh is atomic.** `RefreshChatContext` reads the agent's latest snapshot and re-pins the chat in one repeatable-read transaction, so a concurrent push cannot land between the read and the write and leave the chat pinned to a stale hash with the dirty marker cleared. - **Hydrate + dirty run inside the push transaction.** The fan-out shares the push's transaction so a concurrent refresh cannot interleave with the version gate; `context_dirty` watch events publish only after commit. The pinned hash on dirtied chats is intentionally left unchanged — the refresh endpoint re-pins it. - **Dirtied chats keep their pinned hash.** Drift is advisory: a dirty chat stays usable, and refreshing is the only path that advances the pinned hash. - **Test binds `chats.agent_id` directly.** In production the binding is set lazily during a chat turn (`chatd.persistBuildAgentBinding`); the test sets it via `dbgen` so it exercises the context flow rather than turn resolution. Plan: `coderd/x/chatd` context integration + E2E (sub-struct API, create-time + push-time hydration, refresh endpoint; `context_dirty_resources` and the per-turn pull untouched). </details> 🤖 Generated by Coder Agents on behalf of @kylecarbs |

fix!: rename chat stream silence timeout error (#25973)
Renames the Agents chat stream-silence error from `startup_timeout` to `stream_silence_timeout` now that the timeout applies to any gap between provider stream parts, not just first-token startup. Updates the SDK enum, generated API docs/types, chat error copy, and Agents UI stories/status labels so the user-facing wording describes a stalled provider response instead of startup delay. > **Breaking change:** This is a very minor breaking change for the Coder Agents API: the public chat error kind enum no longer includes `startup_timeout`, so clients matching that specific value should handle `stream_silence_timeout` instead. |

feat: parse execute tool commands and render them in the chat UI (#25478)
When the execute tool runs a chained shell command, the UI previously
rendered the raw string. Long chains like "cd /repo && git pull &&
git add . && git commit -m fix" were hard to scan.
A new ChatMessagePart.ParsedCommands [][]string field on tool-call
parts carries one entry per simple command, parsed in chatd from args
via mvdan.cc/sh/v3/syntax. The frontend renders the joined list ("cd,
git pull, git add, git commit") in place of the raw command, and falls
back to the raw command when the field is absent.

feat: record created_at/completed_at on reasoning ChatMessageParts (#24789)
Records reasoning start and end times on persisted reasoning `ChatMessagePart`s so reasoning duration can be computed for stored chats. Backend-only: no SSE changes and no frontend rendering ship in this PR. The `created_at` field on `ChatMessagePart` is extended to also be present on `reasoning` parts (it previously appeared only on `tool-call` and `tool-result`), and a new `completed_at` field is added for `reasoning` parts. ### How timestamps are recorded - `StreamPartTypeReasoningStart`: stamp `startedAt = dbtime.Now()` on the active reasoning state. - `StreamPartTypeReasoningEnd`: stamp `completedAt = dbtime.Now()` and append both into parallel `[]time.Time` slices on `stepResult`. - Persistence reads the slices in occurrence order (reasoning has no provider-side ID) and applies them to the matching `ChatMessagePart` via `buildAssistantPartsForPersist`. The first reasoning block's stamps go onto the first reasoning part, and so on. - `flushActiveState` flushes partial reasoning interrupted before `StreamPartTypeReasoningEnd` with `startedAt` from the active state and `completedAt = dbtime.Now()` at the interruption. ### Why two fields, not one? Tool calls and results are point events. The frontend computes their duration by subtracting the call's `created_at` from the result's `created_at`. Reasoning is one assistant part that brackets a span, so we record both endpoints on the part itself. ### Why not stamp in `PartFromContent`? Same rationale as #24101: `PartFromContent` is called during both SSE publishing and persistence. Stamping there would yield incorrect persistence-time timestamps for reasoning blocks that finished much earlier in the step. Instead we capture in the chatloop and apply during persistence. <details><summary>Implementation plan</summary> - `codersdk/chats.go`: extend `CreatedAt`'s `variants` to include `reasoning?`; add `CompletedAt *time.Time` with `variants:"reasoning?"`. - `coderd/x/chatd/chatloop/chatloop.go`: extend `reasoningState` with `startedAt`; extend `stepResult` and `PersistedStep` with parallel `[]time.Time` reasoning slices; stamp on `ReasoningStart`/`ReasoningEnd`; thread the slices through all `PersistStep` call sites including the interrupt-safe path; record partial reasoning in `flushActiveState`. - `coderd/x/chatd/attachments.go`: walk reasoning parts in occurrence order and apply `step.ReasoningStartedAt[i]` to `part.CreatedAt` and `step.ReasoningCompletedAt[i]` to `part.CompletedAt`. ### Tests - `codersdk/chats_test.go` round-trips `created_at` + `completed_at` on reasoning parts and verifies omission when absent and partial interrupted parts. - `coderd/x/chatd/chatprompt/chatprompt_test.go` asserts `PartFromContent(ReasoningContent{})` does NOT stamp timestamps. - `coderd/x/chatd/chatloop/chatloop_test.go` `TestRun_ReasoningTimestamps` drives a stream with two reasoning blocks and verifies parallel slices, monotonicity, ordering, non-zero values, and content-block ordering. `TestRun_InterruptedReasoningFlushesTimestamps` cancels mid-reasoning and verifies `flushActiveState` records a non-zero pair. - `coderd/x/chatd/attachments_test.go` covers `buildAssistantPartsForPersist` for normal interleaved reasoning, partial (zero `completed_at`), and missing slices. </details> > Generated by Coder Agents. feat: dedicated /prompts endpoint for chat history cycle (#25083)
Follow-up to #25004. The merged change cycles only through messages
already loaded in the in-memory chat store (page size 50). Long chats
and chats whose oldest turns have rolled out of the page lose access to
their earlier prompts in the composer's up/down arrow cycle. This PR
adds a dedicated server endpoint that returns the full prompt history,
newest first, and rewires the composer to use it.
## What changed
### Endpoint
`GET /api/experimental/chats/{chat}/prompts?limit=N`
```go
type ChatPrompt struct { ID int64; Text string }
type ChatPromptsResponse struct { Prompts []ChatPrompt }
```
- `limit`: `0..2000`. `0` (the default) is treated as the server-side
default of 500; out-of-range values return `400`. Negative values are
rejected by the SDK's `PositiveInt32` parser before reaching the
handler.
- Auth: parent-chat read in `dbauthz`, mirroring
`GetChatMessagesByChatID`.
- The SQL filters `role='user'`, `deleted=false`, `visibility IN
('user','both')`, guards the lateral with `jsonb_typeof(content) =
'array'` so legacy V0 scalar-string rows are silently skipped, then
unrolls `content` JSONB with `WITH ORDINALITY` and concatenates only
`type='text'` parts in original order via `string_agg(... ORDER BY
ordinality)`. Messages whose joined text is whitespace-only are dropped
via `HAVING ... ~ '\S'` so cycling never lands on a blank entry.
### Partial index (migration `000494`)
```sql
CREATE INDEX idx_chat_messages_user_prompts
ON chat_messages (chat_id, id DESC)
WHERE deleted = false
AND role = 'user'
AND visibility IN ('user', 'both');
```
The partial WHERE matches the query's filter exactly and the key order
matches `ORDER BY id DESC`, so the planner gets both the filter and the
ordering from the index without a sort step.
`EXPLAIN ANALYZE` on a synthetic 51-chat × 5,000-message dataset (≈260k
rows, 10k user prompts in the target chat, `random_page_cost=1.1`):
| | Plan | Buffers hit | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Without index | `Index Scan Backward using chat_messages_pkey`,
**250,848 rows removed by filter** | 6,683 | 32.4 ms |
| With index | `Index Scan using idx_chat_messages_user_prompts`, no
filter | 38 | 1.3 ms |
≈25× faster, 175× fewer buffer hits.
### Frontend
- `chatPromptsKey` / `chatPromptsQuery` factories in
`site/src/api/queries/chats.ts` (`staleTime: 30s`, `enabled: chatId !==
""`, asks the server for 500 prompts).
- `ChatPageContent.tsx` replaces the in-memory derivation with
`useQuery(chatPromptsQuery(chatId ?? ""))`. The composer's existing
`cycleHistorySnapshotRef` anchors the in-flight cycle so a refetch
arriving mid-cycle cannot shift the indexed prompt out from under the
user.
- `getEditableUserMessagePayload` now concatenates user-message text
parts verbatim, mirroring the server's `string_agg(part->>'text', ''
ORDER BY ordinality)`, instead of routing through the streaming-oriented
`parseMessageContent` / `appendText` pipeline (which drops
whitespace-only chunks — correct for assistant streams, wrong for a
user's persisted message). This keeps the cycle and the edit path in
agreement on the same message. File blocks are still pulled separately
via
`parseMessageContent(...).blocks.filter(isEditableUserMessageFileBlock)`.
- Cache invalidation in `createChatMessage.onSuccess`,
`editChatMessage.onSettled`, and `useChatStore.upsertCacheMessages`
(only when an upserted message has `role === "user"`).
- Page-level stories pre-seed `chatPromptsKey(CHAT_ID)` from the same
`messagesData` to keep them offline.
## Tests
- New `TestGetChatUserPrompts` in `coderd/exp_chats_test.go` with five
subtests:
- `NewestFirstFiltering` — multi-part concatenation, non-text parts
skipped, whitespace-only filtered, soft-deleted excluded, `model`-only
visibility excluded, assistant-role excluded by `cm.role = 'user'`,
legacy V0 scalar row silently excluded by the `jsonb_typeof` guard,
ordering newest first.
- `LimitClampsResults` — explicit `limit=2` returns the two newest
prompts.
- `InvalidLimitRejected` — `limit=5000` is `400 Bad Request`.
- `NotFoundForOtherUsers` — a separate user in the same org gets `404`,
not the prompts.
- `EmptyResultIsJSONArray` — zero-message chat and assistant-only chat
both return `Prompts: []` (non-nil, empty).
- New unit test in `messageParsing.test.ts` asserting that
`getEditableUserMessagePayload(["hello", " ", "world"])` returns `"hello
world"`, locking in the agreement with the SQL `string_agg`.
- `dbauthz_test.go` adds the
`MethodTestSuite.TestChats/GetChatUserPromptsByChatID` entry, asserting
parent-chat `policy.ActionRead`.
- `pnpm test src/pages/AgentsPage` — 1159 passed, 2 skipped.
- `make gen` produces no diff.
## Manual verification
Seeded a dev chat with Claude Sonnet 4.6 via the aibridge Anthropic
provider and posted 20 user prompts end-to-end. Verified that the
`/prompts` endpoint returns 20 rows newest-first, that `limit=10` clamps
correctly, that `limit=0` uses the server default of 500, and that the
up/down keyboard cycle in the composer walks the same sequence (and
reverses correctly back to the empty draft).
## Out of scope
- Cross-chat history.
- Per-user opt-out for the cycle.
- File-reference / attachment cycling — the cycle continues to reproduce
plain text only, by design.

feat: filter chats by diff URL via the q search parameter (#24970)
Adds a `diff_url:` term to the `q` search parameter on `GET /api/experimental/chats` so callers can look up the chat associated with a particular pull request, merge request, or any other URL persisted on the chat's diff status. ``` q=diff_url:"https://github.com/coder/coder/pull/123" ``` Match is case-insensitive. When the URL lives on a delegated sub-agent's diff status, the parent chat is returned so the relationship surfaces from a single lookup. <details> <summary>Design notes</summary> - **Forge-agnostic.** Reuses the existing `chat_diff_statuses.url` column rather than introducing a `pr:` vocabulary, since the SDK already documents the URL as "may point to a pull request or a branch page depending on whether a PR has been opened." Works for GitHub PRs, GitLab MRs, branch pages, etc. - **Composes with `archived:`.** The two terms can be combined: `q=archived:true diff_url:"..."`. - **Case handling.** The parser used to lowercase the entire `q` string up front, which would mangle URL path segments. Switched to lowercasing only the field key inside `searchTerms` (already happens there) and keeping the value as the caller typed it. The SQL comparison lowercases on both sides. - **Validation.** `diff_url` must be a syntactically valid HTTP(S) URL with a non-empty host. No forge-specific validation. - **Index.** Adds `idx_chat_diff_statuses_url_lower` on `LOWER(url)` so the lookup is cheap even on large datasets. - **Sub-agent fan-in.** `EXISTS` clause matches when the URL lives on the chat itself or any chat with `root_chat_id` equal to the chat's id, so a delegated sub-agent's PR pulls in its parent. - **Deferred.** Sentinels like `pr:any` / `pr:none` and a forge-agnostic state filter (`diff_state:open|merged|closed`) were intentionally left out of this change. They couple cleanly to a second forge or a clearer product call, and shipping them now would lock in vocabulary we may want to revisit. </details> ## Tests - `coderd/searchquery`: parser tests for valid URLs, case handling (key insensitive, value preserved), composition with `archived:`, and validation errors (non-HTTP scheme, missing host, malformed URL). - `coderd/exp_chats_test.go`: end-to-end coverage hitting `ListChats`. Verifies a root chat matches its own URL, a parent chat surfaces when only a sub-agent has the URL, lookups are case-insensitive, non-matching URLs return empty, and invalid URLs return `400`. --- _This PR was authored by a Coder Agent on behalf of @kylecarbs._ |

fix: allow changing model when editing earlier chat message (#25084)
Editing a previous user message and selecting a different model in the
picker silently kept using the original model: the selection was dropped
on the frontend, in the SDK, and in the backend, so both the replacement
user message and the assistant turn that followed ran against the old
model.
Plumb the selected model through all three layers (`AgentChatPage`,
`codersdk.EditChatMessageRequest`, `chatd.EditMessageOptions` /
`Server.EditMessage`), defaulting to the original message's model when
the client does not specify one. The existing `InsertChatMessages` CTE
already advances `chats.last_model_config_id` when the inserted
message's model differs, so the assistant turn picks up the new
selection without further changes. The new model is validated inside the
transaction, so an unknown ID rolls the edit back and returns a 400
`Invalid model config ID.`, mirroring the `SendMessage` path.

# CODAGT-345: Editing an earlier message cannot change model
## Problem
When editing a previous user message in a chat, the user can change the
model in the model picker, but the backend keeps using the original
message's model. The model selection is dropped at three layers:
1. **Frontend:** `AgentChatPage.tsx`'s edit branch builds an
`EditChatMessageRequest` that omits `model_config_id`. The new-message
branch (a few lines below) does include it.
2. **SDK:** `codersdk.EditChatMessageRequest` has no `ModelConfigID`
field at all.
3. **Backend:** `chatd.EditMessageOptions` has no model field, and
`Server.EditMessage` always copies the original message's
`ModelConfigID` into the replacement message.
Once the replacement user message is inserted with the original model,
the `InsertChatMessages` CTE leaves `chats.last_model_config_id`
unchanged, so the assistant turn that follows runs against the old
model.
## Fix
Plumb the selected model through all three layers, defaulting to the
original message's model when the client doesn't override it. This
mirrors the `SendMessage` path, which already accepts a
`model_config_id` and validates it via
`resolveSendMessageModelConfigID`.
### Backend
- `codersdk/chats.go`: add `ModelConfigID *uuid.UUID` to
`EditChatMessageRequest`.
- `coderd/x/chatd/chatd.go`:
- Add `ModelConfigID uuid.UUID` to `EditMessageOptions`.
- In `EditMessage`, after fetching the edited message, resolve the
model: if `opts.ModelConfigID != uuid.Nil`, validate it exists with
`tx.GetChatModelConfigByID` (using `chatdModelConfigLookupContext`),
otherwise keep `editedMsg.ModelConfigID.UUID`. Pass the resolved ID into
`newChatMessage(...)`.
- Reuse the existing `ErrInvalidModelConfigID` sentinel.
- `coderd/exp_chats.go` (`patchChatMessage`):
- Read `req.ModelConfigID` (nil-safe), pass into
`chatd.EditMessageOptions`.
- Add a `case xerrors.Is(editErr, chatd.ErrInvalidModelConfigID)` arm
returning 400 `Invalid model config ID.`, matching the
`postChatMessages` handler.
### Frontend
- `site/src/pages/AgentsPage/AgentChatPage.tsx`:
- In the edit branch, set `model_config_id: effectiveSelectedModel ||
undefined` on the `EditChatMessageRequest`.
- On success, persist the chosen model to `lastModelConfigIDStorageKey`
so the next chat from this browser keeps the same default. Mirrors the
new-message branch.
### Generated
- `make site/src/api/typesGenerated.ts` and `make
coderd/apidoc/swagger.json` produce the updated `EditChatMessageRequest`
schema in `typesGenerated.ts`, `coderd/apidoc/{docs.go,swagger.json}`,
and `docs/reference/api/{chats.md,schemas.md}`.
## Tests
- `coderd/x/chatd/chatd_test.go`:
- `TestEditMessageWithModelConfigOverride`: edit with a different model
-> replacement message and `chats.LastModelConfigID` use the new model.
- `TestEditMessagePreservesModelConfigByDefault`: edit without
`ModelConfigID` -> original model preserved.
- `TestEditMessageRejectsUnknownModelConfig`: passes a random UUID ->
`ErrInvalidModelConfigID`, original message still present,
`LastModelConfigID` unchanged (rollback).
- `coderd/exp_chats_test.go` (under `TestPatchChatMessage`):
- `ChangesModel`: end-to-end via SDK; `edited.Message.ModelConfigID` and
`chat.LastModelConfigID` both match the new model.
- `InvalidModelConfigID`: random UUID -> 400 `Invalid model config ID.`.

feat: stream advisor tool output (#25032)
Stream advisor output into the advisor tool card while the nested advisor call is still running. This keeps the advisor implementation intentionally advisor-specific: the parent model still receives the same final structured tool result, while the frontend receives transient `tool-result.result_delta` parts to render partial advisor text in the expanded card. The final persisted chat history remains unchanged. Refs CODAGT-322. Generated by Coder Agents. <details> <summary>Implementation plan</summary> - Publish advisor text deltas from the nested `chatloop.Run` via `RunAdvisorOptions.OnAdviceDelta`. - Forward those deltas through `chatadvisor.Tool` with the parent advisor tool call ID. - Emit transient `ChatMessagePartTypeToolResult` websocket parts with `ResultDelta` from `chatd`. - Add `result_delta` to the generated tool-result TypeScript variant. - Accumulate tool result deltas in frontend stream state and keep the tool running until the final result arrives. - Render streamed advisor advice in the existing advisor card using streaming markdown mode, while retaining the updated advisor UI. </details> |

feat: show agent turn summary in agents sidebar (#24942)
Persists the agent-generated turn-end summary on `chats` and shows it as the Agents sidebar subtitle when present, falling back to the model name. Errors still take precedence. > Mux is acting on Mike's behalf. ## What changes **Storage.** New nullable `last_turn_summary` column on `chats` (migration `000486`). New `UpdateChatLastTurnSummary` query normalizes blank/whitespace input to `NULL`, preserves `updated_at` (so the chat does not jump to the top of the sidebar on summary writes), and uses an `expected_updated_at` stale-write guard so an older async summary cannot overwrite a newer turn. **Backend.** `coderd/x/chatd/chatd.go` decouples summary generation from webpush. Generated summaries persist for completed parent turns even when webpush is unconfigured or has no subscriptions. The same generated text is reused as the webpush body when webpush is configured, so the summary model is not called twice. Generic fallback push text is no longer persisted; it clears any stale summary instead. Error/interrupt/pending-action terminal paths clear `last_turn_summary` for the latest turn. **Frontend.** `AgentsSidebar.tsx` subtitle priority is now `errorReason || lastTurnSummary || modelName`, normalized via the existing `asNonEmptyString` helper from `blockUtils.ts`. ## Tests - `TestUpdateChatLastTurnSummary` (database): success, whitespace-to-NULL, stale guard rejects, `updated_at` preserved. - `TestUpdateLastTurnSummaryRejectsStaleWrites` (chatd internal): direct stale-`expected_updated_at` test. - `TestSuccessfulChatPersistsTurnSummaryWithoutWebPush`: persistence works without webpush subscriptions. - `TestSuccessfulChatSendsWebPushWithSummary`: same generated text drives both DB and push body. - `TestSuccessfulChatSendsWebPushFallbackWithoutSummaryForEmptyAssistantText`: fallback text is not persisted. - `TestErroredChatClearsLastTurnSummaryAndSendsWebPush`: error path clears the field. - `TestInterruptChatDoesNotSendWebPushNotification`: interrupt path clears the field, no push fires. - `AgentsSidebar.test.tsx`: subtitle priority for summary-present, error-wins, no-summary fallback, whitespace fallback. - `AgentsSidebar.stories.tsx`: `ChatWithTurnSummary` and `ChatWithTurnSummaryAndError`. ## Notes - No backfill. Existing chats keep showing the model name until their next turn completes. - Parent chats only in this iteration; the field is rendered on any `Chat` if a future change extends generation to children. - Decoupling generation from webpush adds quickgen model calls for completed parent turns that previously skipped generation when no subscriptions existed. Existing parent-only, assistant-text-present, `PushSummaryModel` configured, and bounded-timeout gates keep this behavior bounded. |

fix: regenerate API docs for ChatErrorKind (#24989)
Follow-up to #24955 (`refactor: move chat error kinds into codersdk`), which moved `ChatErrorKind` into `codersdk` but did not refresh the generated apidoc artifacts. As a result, `make gen` was producing a dirty tree on `main`. This PR is the output of running `make gen -B` on a clean checkout of `main`. Only generated files are touched: - `coderd/apidoc/docs.go` - `coderd/apidoc/swagger.json` - `docs/reference/api/chats.md` - `docs/reference/api/schemas.md` The diff adds the `codersdk.ChatErrorKind` schema and replaces the previously-untyped `kind: string` fields on `codersdk.ChatError` and `codersdk.ChatRetryEvent` with references to the new enum. |

feat: chat desktop backend (#23005)
Implement the backend for the desktop feature for agents. - Adds a new `/api/experimental/chats/$id/desktop` endpoint to coderd which exposes a VNC stream from a [portabledesktop](https://github.com/coder/portabledesktop) process running inside the workspace - Adds a new `spawn_computer_use_agent` tool to chatd, which spawns a subagent that has access to the `computer` tool which lets it interact with the `portabledesktop` process running inside the workspace - Adds the plumbing to make the above possible There's a follow up frontend PR here: https://github.com/coder/coder/pull/23006 |

feat: add file/image attachment support to chat input (#22604)
This change adds support for image attachments to chat via add button and clipboard paste. Files are stored in a new `chat_files` table and referenced by ID in message content. File data is resolved from storage at LLM dispatch time, keeping the message content column small. Upload validates MIME types via content type or content sniffing against an allowlist (png, jpeg, gif, webp). The retrieval endpoint serves files with immutable caching headers. On the frontend, uploads start eagerly on attach with a background fetch to pre-warm the browser HTTP cache so the timeline renders instantly after send. |

feat: agents git watch backend (#22565)
Adds real-time git status watching for workspace agents, so the frontend
can subscribe over WebSocket and show
git file changes in near real-time.
1. Subscription is scoped to a **chat** via `GET
/api/experimental/chats/{chat}/git/watch`.
2. The workspace agent automatically determines which paths to watch
based on tool calls made by the chat (and its ancestor chats).
3. Workspace agent polls subscribed repo working trees on a 30s
interval, on tools calls, and on explicit `refresh` from the client.
4. Scans are rate-limited to at most once per second.
5. Edited paths are tracked **in-memory** inside the workspace agent.
There is no database persistence — state is lost on agent restart. This
will be addresses in a future PR.
6. Messages sent over WebSocket include a full-repo snapshot (unified
diff, branch, origin). A new message is emitted only when the snapshot
changes.
This PR was implemented with AI with me closely controlling what it's
doing. The code follows a plan file that was updated continuously during
implementation. Here's the file if you'd like to see it:
[project.md](https://gist.github.com/hugodutka/8722cf80c92f8a56555f7bc595b770e2).
It reflects the current state of the PR.

feat(chats): archive chats instead of hard-deleting them (#22406)
## Summary
The UI has always labeled the action as "Archive agent" but the backend
was performing a hard `DELETE`, permanently destroying chats and all
their messages.
This change replaces the hard delete with a soft archive, consistent
with the pattern used by template versions.
## Changes
### Database
- **Migration 000423**: Add `archived boolean DEFAULT false NOT NULL`
column to `chats` table
- Replace `DeleteChatByID` query with `ArchiveChatByID` (`UPDATE SET
archived = true`)
- Add `UnarchiveChatByID` query (`UPDATE SET archived = false`)
- Filter archived chats from `GetChatsByOwnerID` (`WHERE archived =
false`)
### API
- Remove `DELETE /api/experimental/chats/{chat}`
- Add `POST /api/experimental/chats/{chat}/archive` — archives a chat
and all its descendants
- Add `POST /api/experimental/chats/{chat}/unarchive` — unarchives a
single chat (API only, no UI yet)
### Backend
- `archiveChatTree()` recursively archives child chats (replaces
`deleteChatTree()` which hard-deleted)
- Chat daemon's `ArchiveChat()` archives the full chat tree in a
transaction
- Authorization uses `ActionUpdate` instead of `ActionDelete`
### SDK
- Replace `DeleteChat()` with `ArchiveChat()` and `UnarchiveChat()`
- Add `Archived` field to `Chat` struct
### Frontend
- `archiveChat` API call uses `POST .../archive` instead of `DELETE`
- No UI changes — the "Archive agent" button now actually archives
instead of deleting
## Design Decision
This follows the **template version archive pattern** (Pattern B in the
codebase):
- `archived boolean` column (not `deleted boolean`)
- Dedicated `POST .../archive` and `POST .../unarchive` routes (not
repurposing `DELETE`)
- Reversible — users can unarchive via the API (UI for this will come
later)
