Cian Johnston 14767dfa8e feat: explain missing POSIX sh on Windows workspaces (#27048)
When a workspace has no POSIX sh on PATH (typical for fresh Windows workspaces), the execute tool fails with a raw `exec: "sh": executable file not found in %PATH%` error the model cannot act on.

This change:
- Enriches the above error in chattool with remediation steps and a docs link.
- Documents the requirement in the Coder Agents architecture page.

Kyle Carberry 58f70b4488 fix(coderd/x/chatd): sanitize workspace MCP tool names (#26928)
## Summary

Workspace MCP tools (servers a workspace declares in `.mcp.json`) take
their model-facing name from the server key joined with the tool name as
`serverName__toolName`. That name reached the model **unsanitized**, so
a server or tool name containing a character outside
`^[a-zA-Z0-9_-]{1,128}$` (for example `@`) produced an invalid tool
name. Anthropic and Bedrock reject the whole request with `HTTP 400`:

```
tools.N.custom.name: String should match pattern '^[a-zA-Z0-9_-]{1,128}$'
```

which fails the entire turn, not just the one tool. The remote MCP path
(`mcpclient`) and the AI Gateway path (`aibridge/mcp`) already sanitize;
the workspace path did not.

Alternative to #26853 (thanks @ibdafna for the report and repro).

## Fix

Sanitize and length-cap the **model-facing** name, and keep the original
`serverName__toolName` as a `routingName` the workspace agent uses to
reach the original server and tool. `NewWorkspaceMCPTools` builds a
whole set and disambiguates names that collide after sanitization (for
example server keys `foo.bar` and `foo_bar` both exposing `echo`) so
every tool stays addressable in the model's name-keyed dispatch map.
Names already within the allowed set are unchanged, so there is no
behavior change for valid names.

The sanitizer is local to `coderd/x/chatd/chattool`; the fix does
**not** touch the `aibridge` package or the remote MCP client.

### Changes
- `coderd/x/chatd/chattool/mcpworkspace.go`: local provider-safe
sanitizer + length cap, `routingName` for the agent proxy, and
`NewWorkspaceMCPTools` for set-level collision disambiguation.
- `coderd/x/chatd/chatd.go`: build the pinned workspace tool set via
`NewWorkspaceMCPTools`.

## Why sanitize here (not at `.mcp.json` / agent parse)?

The agent uses `serverName__toolName` to route to the real downstream
server (it splits on `__` and calls the original tool name), so
sanitizing at parse time would break routing or merely relocate the
original->sanitized mapping. Sanitization is also a provider constraint
the agent has no knowledge of, and coderd/agent version skew means
coderd must sanitize at its own boundary regardless. The model-facing
boundary in chatd is the right place.

## Test plan
- `@` in a name is sanitized for the model while the original routes to
the agent; a valid name is unchanged; an over-length name is truncated;
colliding names in a set are disambiguated while each still routes to
its own original name.
- `go build`, `go vet`, `golangci-lint`, and `go test
./coderd/x/chatd/chattool/...` pass locally.

<details>
<summary>Design notes / decision log</summary>

**Constraint that drives the design.** The tool name is both the
identifier shown to the model (and the key the model layer dispatches
tool calls by) and, for the workspace path, the string the agent splits
on `__` to route back to the original server and tool. Those roles
conflict once sanitization changes the name, so the name is sanitized
for the model while the unsanitized form is kept as `routingName`.

**Options considered.**
1. **Chosen:** sanitize in the workspace path only, with helpers local
to `chattool`. Smallest blast radius; no new cross-package dependency.
This matches the shape of the other MCP paths (`mcpclient` keeps
`originalName` + `configID`) without sharing code.
2. Sanitize at `.mcp.json` parse time or in the agent. Rejected: breaks
routing (the agent needs the original name), pushes a provider concern
into the agent, and coderd must still defend its own boundary because
the agent and coderd version independently. Tool names also come from
the downstream server at list time, not from `.mcp.json`, so parsing
cannot fully validate them.
3. Extract a shared sanitize/truncate/dedupe helper into `aibridge/mcp`
and adopt it in `mcpclient` too (so the remote path also gains collision
disambiguation). This DRYs all paths, but it grows chatd's coupling to
the `aibridge` subsystem and expands scope/behavior/tests in the remote
path for what is a workspace-path bug. Left out deliberately to keep
this change minimal and self-contained; it can be a separate refactor.
4. Sanitize once at the provider serialization boundary (chat loop). The
only truly generic spot, but the model dispatches by name, so it needs a
reverse (sanitized -> original) mapping and set-wide collision handling
in the model layer. Larger, riskier change.

**Notes.**
- The workspace path defines its own sanitizer (`[^a-zA-Z0-9_-]` -> `_`)
and a `maxModelToolNameLen = 64` constant that mirrors the strictest
provider limit (OpenAI 64, Bedrock 128), rather than importing
`aibridge/mcp`, so it carries no new dependency.
- The set builder sorts before assigning suffixes so disambiguation is
stable across turns.

Kyle Carberry 48fd0ef4bc feat: return workspace skill directory from read_skill (#26713)
Workspace skills live on the workspace filesystem, and the agent's read_file
and execute tools already operate there. read_skill now returns "dir", the
absolute skill directory, for workspace skills, so the agent can read or run
bundled supporting files (for example a scripts/ helper) with the workspace
tools. The field is omitted for personal skills, which are database-backed and
have no files. read_skill_file is unchanged.

Kyle Carberry cd56ab9e33 refactor: remove legacy live-read and injected-history chat context paths (#26585)
This PR makes the agent-pushed pinned snapshot
(`chat_context_resources`) the sole source of workspace context for
chats, completing the "Release 5" cleanup. It removes legacy mechanisms
now superseded by the snapshot that agents push over dRPC
(`PushContextState`) and refresh via `chat-context/refresh`.

Removed:

- **Live-read at turn time.** MCP tool discovery, skill live-body reads,
and the instruction/skill history fallback that dialed the workspace on
every turn.
- **Context injected as message history.** The
`persist_workspace_context` generation action and its decision-loop
guard.
- **The legacy write path.** `POST`/`DELETE
/api/v2/workspaceagents/me/experimental/chat-context`, the agentsdk
`AddChatContext`/`ClearChatContext` methods, and the CLI one-shot
writer.
- **The `chats.last_injected_context` column** and all of its plumbing
(migration `000529`, queries, `db2sdk`, `dbauthz`, audit table, and the
frontend `ContextUsageIndicator` fallback).

Subagent context inheritance no longer copies parent context messages;
children now hydrate the parent's pinned `chat_context_resources` on
create, which yields an identical pin for the same workspace and agent.

What stays (still served by the live agent connection, not the
snapshot): `read_skill_file` supporting-file reads, `read_skill`
supporting-file listing, and MCP tool execution.

> [!NOTE]
> Migration `000529` drops `chats.last_injected_context` and recreates
the `chats_expanded` view without it. The down migration restores both.

<details>
<summary>Decision log (D1-D5)</summary>

- **D1 (subagent inheritance):** Re-point inheritance from the legacy
message copy to a pinned hydrate. Children call
`hydrateChatContextOnCreate` instead of copying parent context messages.
- **D2 (`persist_workspace_context`):** Remove the generation action
entirely along with the decision-loop guard it existed to satisfy, since
context is never injected into history anymore.
- **D3 (legacy HTTP + CLI):** Remove the experimental `chat-context`
POST/DELETE endpoints, the agentsdk methods, and the CLI one-shot. The
dRPC push + `chat-context/refresh` replace them.
- **D4 (frontend fallback):** Remove the `last_injected_context`
fallback in `ContextUsageIndicator`; pinned `resources` are the sole
source.
- **D5 (sequencing):** Ship as a single PR rather than a stacked pair.

Kyle Carberry 78c5ab96c9 feat(coderd/x/chatd): serve workspace MCP tools and read_skill from pinned context (#26581)
This wires the last two consumer-side gaps of the agent-pushed workspace
context refactor. coderd already hydrates each chat's pinned context
(`chat_context_resources`), and `resolveTurnWorkspaceContext` already
prefers the pin for instruction files and skill metadata. This change
extends that preference to workspace MCP tools and the `read_skill`
body.

Workspace MCP tools are now built from the chat's pinned `mcp_server`
resources instead of a live `ListMCPTools` pull.
`resolveWorkspaceMCPTools` prefers the pin and falls back to live
discovery for chats whose agent has not reported context yet, gated the
same way as the instruction/skills pin: the pin wins whenever the chat
has any pinned rows, so a workspace with no MCP servers contributes no
tools rather than resurrecting stale ones. Because the agent reports
tool names unprefixed, each tool is re-prefixed to the
`{server}__{tool}` form and the pushed JSON Schema is split into
`properties` and `required` so the result matches what live discovery
produced. Calls still proxy through the workspace agent connection; the
snapshot carries tool definitions, not a way to execute them.

`read_skill` now serves a workspace skill's `SKILL.md` body from the
pinned snapshot (`SkillMeta.Meta`) instead of dialing the agent, so a
pinned chat keeps returning the same instructions even when the
workspace is unreachable. The supporting-file list stays a best-effort
live lookup, since the snapshot carries only the meta file per the agent
push contract.

The legacy live paths remain as the fallback for agents that have not
pushed context; RFC Release-5 cleanup of those paths is out of scope
here.

<details>
<summary>Implementation plan and decisions</summary>

### Background

The agentcontext refactor is mostly shipped across earlier PRs (#25983,
#26526, #26533, #26577, #26570, #26573): the agent resolves instruction
files, skills, and MCP servers into a snapshot, pushes it via
`PushContextState`, and coderd hydrates each chat's pinned context
(`chat_context_resources`). This PR closes the two remaining
consumer-side gaps.

### Key facts established from the code

- Pushed MCP tool names are **unprefixed** (`mcprunner` stores
`tool.Name`); the agent MCP proxy and `CallMCPTool` expect the
`{server}__{tool}` form (`agentmcp.ToolNameSep`). The pinned path
reconstructs the prefix for execution, matching the model-facing names
the legacy path produced.
- Legacy `agentmcp` sets `MCPToolInfo.Schema = InputSchema.Properties`
and `Required = InputSchema.Required` separately. The pushed
`input_schema` is the full JSON Schema object, so the pinned builder
extracts `properties` and `required` to match that shape.
- `SkillMetaBody.meta` is the verbatim SKILL.md. The supporting-file
list is **not** in the snapshot, so it is fetched live on demand
(best-effort).
- Gating mirrors `resolveTurnWorkspaceContext`: the pin wins when the
chat has any pinned rows; otherwise the live path is used.

### Changes

1. `chattool/skill.go`: add `SkillMeta.Meta []byte`; extract
`listSkillFiles` from `LoadSkillBody`; in `readWorkspaceSkillBody`, when
`Meta` is present, parse the body from it without dialing and list files
best-effort, else use the legacy live read.
2. `context_prompt.go`: populate `SkillMeta.Meta` in
`contextResourcesToPrompt`; add `workspaceMCPToolInfosFromResources`
(pinned `mcp_server` rows to `[]workspacesdk.MCPToolInfo` with prefixed
names and split properties/required) and `splitMCPInputSchema`.
3. `chatd.go`: add `pinnedWorkspaceMCPTools` (build tools from the pin,
ok-gated) and `resolveWorkspaceMCPTools` (pin-first, fall back to
`discoverWorkspaceMCPTools`).
4. `generation_preparer.go`: call `resolveWorkspaceMCPTools` instead of
`discoverWorkspaceMCPTools`.

### Tests

- `chattool/skill_test.go`: read_skill serves the pinned body without
dialing, lists files via LS, and still returns the body when the
workspace is unreachable.
- `context_prompt_internal_test.go`: `SkillMeta.Meta` is populated;
`workspaceMCPToolInfosFromResources` prefixing/properties/required/skip
behavior; `pinnedWorkspaceMCPTools` ok-gating and fallback dispatch.

Jaayden Halko bc44cdda75 feat: rank chat workspace templates (#25037)
closes CODAGT-203

## Summary

`list_templates` now returns a ranked shortlist with a recommendation,
so the chat agent can pick the right template the way a colleague would:
prefer what matches the request, what the user already uses, and what
the rest of the organization uses. Instead of teaching the model an enum
protocol in prompts, every result carries a fixed `next_step`
instruction telling the agent what to do.

## How list_templates works

1. **Fetch**: active, non-deprecated templates in the chat's
organization, filtered by the admin template allowlist, authorized as
the chat owner (no system escalation).
2. **Query relevance** (optional `query` argument): each template
receives the highest tier any of its fields matches, and a higher tier
always outranks a lower one regardless of usage:

   | Tier | Match |
   |------|-------|
   | 4 | name or display name equals the query |
   | 3 | name or display name starts with the query |
   | 2 | name or display name contains the query |
| 1 | description contains the query (checked only when no name field
matched) |
   | 0 | no match; the template is excluded |

Matching is case-insensitive and ignores spaces/hyphens/underscores
(`python gpu` matches `python-gpu`).
3. **Usage signals**: a new `GetTemplateRankingSignalsByOwnerID` query
returns, per template, the owner's active and recently-deleted workspace
counts within a 60-day window, the last in-window usage, and the count
of distinct developers with an active workspace (unclaimed prebuilds
excluded).
4. **Affinity score** (computed in Go, per template, from that
template's signals only):

   ```text
affinity = 10 x (active + 0.5 x deleted) x 0.5^(days_since_last_use /
14)
            + ln(1 + active_developers)
   ```

`active`/`deleted` are the owner's in-window workspace counts,
`days_since_last_use` is measured from the most recent in-window usage
(the personal term is zero without in-window usage), and
`active_developers` is the org-wide count. Personal usage carries 10x
the weight of org popularity; the confidence floor is the score of two
active developers (`ln 3`) and the required lead over the runner-up is
`ln 3 - ln 2`.
5. **Rank**: query tier first (when a query is present), then affinity
score, then name/ID for determinism. Results paginate 10 per page with
`next_page` present only when more exist.

## Recommendation contract

The result tells the agent what to do next instead of describing
confidence levels:

- `recommended_template_id` is present only when the top template is a
clear winner: the only available template, a decisive query match, or an
affinity score that clears a floor and leads the runner-up by a derived
margin.
- `next_step` is always present and is one of four fixed sentences: use
the recommendation, ask the user to choose, retry a query that matched
nothing, or report that no templates are available.

Per-template items carry raw evidence (`active_developers`,
`your_workspace_count`, `last_used_by_you`) rather than derived labels.
When signals fail to load, the tool logs and degrades to asking the user
unless the query alone is decisive.

Prompts and the `create_workspace`/`read_template` descriptions
reference the field through the `chattool.NextStepField` constant, so
the instruction lives in one place and cannot drift. `create_workspace`
remains idempotent and allowlist-enforced.

## Authorization

The signals query runs with the chat owner's permissions: reading the
owner's own workspaces plus a template-metadata read for the cross-user
popularity count. dbauthz rejects the call if any requested template is
not readable by the owner (covered by allow and deny method tests).

## Docs

Adds `docs/ai-coder/agents/tools/` explaining how agent tool calls work,
with `list_templates` ranking and the `next_step` contract as the first
documented tools.

Mathias Fredriksson 32ed9f1f39 fix: use old_text/new_text in edit_files tool schema (#25658)
Models frequently confuse the search and replace fields in the
edit_files tool (CODAGT-312). Rename the model-facing JSON fields
to old_text/new_text so the intent is unambiguous.

Backend: custom UnmarshalJSON on editFileEdit falls back to
deprecated search/replace when old_text/new_text are empty. The
workspace agent API is unchanged; toSDKFiles maps old_text/new_text
back to search/replace for agent/agentfiles.

Frontend: normalizeEdit in parseEditFilesArgs accepts both
old_text/new_text and search/replace, normalizing to the internal
{ search, replace } representation so streaming diff rendering
works with either field naming convention.

Michael Suchacz de6d62815e fix(coderd): avoid redundant workspace setup (#25615)
GPT-class chat turns could eagerly create workspaces or repeat setup
such as cloning an existing repo because the system prompt framed setup
work as the default path.

This updates chatd prompt guidance and the `create_workspace` tool
description so agents reuse existing chat and workspace context, treat
injected workspace context as already read, avoid recloning present
repositories, and create or start workspaces only when workspace-backed
work is required. Delegated chats now report workspace needs to the
parent instead of trying to create one.

Ethan c650aabbef chore: standardize on *_internal_test.go for white-box tests (#25601)
My agent added `//nolint:testpackage` to a test file on one of my PRs.
Again. This PR cleans it up across the entire repo and updates the
in-repo conventions so future agents stop doing it.

The repo already has a precedent for white-box tests that need to touch
unexported symbols: `*_internal_test.go` (145+ existing files). The
`testpackage` linter's default `skip-regexp` exempts that filename
suffix, so the `//nolint:testpackage` directive is unnecessary in every
case where someone reached for it. This PR renames 51 such files to
`*_internal_test.go` via `git mv` so blame and history follow, and
strips the dead directive from 2 files that were already correctly named
(`coderd/oauth2provider/authorize_internal_test.go`,
`coderd/x/chatd/advisor_internal_test.go`).

`.claude/docs/TESTING.md` now documents the rule explicitly under *Test
Package Naming*, which is imported into the root `AGENTS.md` via
`@.claude/docs/TESTING.md`. The rule: prefer `package foo_test`; if you
need internal access, rename the file to `*_internal_test.go` rather
than adding a nolint directive.

Mathias Fredriksson f1b772928d feat: parse execute tool commands and render them in the chat UI (#25478)
When the execute tool runs a chained shell command, the UI previously
rendered the raw string. Long chains like "cd /repo && git pull &&
git add . && git commit -m fix" were hard to scan.

A new ChatMessagePart.ParsedCommands [][]string field on tool-call
parts carries one entry per simple command, parsed in chatd from args
via mvdan.cc/sh/v3/syntax. The frontend renders the joined list ("cd,
git pull, git add, git commit") in place of the raw command, and falls
back to the raw command when the field is absent.

Michael Suchacz 63900d212d feat: support personal skills in chats (#25366)
> Mux updated this PR on behalf of Mike.

## Stack Context

This PR builds on #25365 in the experimental personal skills stack and
completes the chat integration.

Stack order:
1. #25362 personal skill resolver
2. #25363 storage, permissions, API, and SDK
3. #25365 API test coverage
4. #25366 chattool and chatd integration
5. #25066 settings UI and docs
6. #25386 personal skills slash menu

## What?

Updates chattool skill formatting and `read_skill` resolution so tools
can read personal skills from the database, then injects personal skill
metadata into chatd prompts and registers the skill-reading tools when
skills are available.

This branch has also been merged with current `origin/main` to resolve
merge conflicts.

## Why?

The chattool and chatd changes need to land together so the intermediate
stack state stays buildable. This completes personal skill availability
in chats without syncing personal skills into workspace filesystems.

Michael Suchacz 951a8e7237 feat: add intent labels to execute tool (#25482)
> Mux opened this PR on behalf of Mike.

Fixes CODAGT-451

Adds optional `model_intent` metadata to the built-in execute tool
schema so tool calls can carry a short user-facing intent label without
duplicating the command or duration.

The Agents UI now composes that intent with the existing execute command
and duration fields, displaying labels like `Checking repository state
using git fetch origin for 2.3s` while keeping the shell command visible
as the audit-relevant action.

Existing execute calls without an intent keep the previous `Ran
<command>` fallback label, so only intent-bearing calls get the new
composed label.

Michael Suchacz 792f0b4902 feat: add personal skill resolver (#25362)
> Mux updated this PR on behalf of Mike.

## Stack Context

This stack splits experimental personal skills into smaller reviewable
PRs. Personal skills are user-owned `SKILL.md` files stored by Coder and
injected into chatd alongside workspace skills.

Stack order:
1. #25362 personal skill resolver
2. #25363 storage, permissions, API, and SDK
3. #25365 API test coverage
4. #25366 chattool and chatd integration
5. #25066 settings UI and docs
6. #25386 personal skills slash menu

## What?

Adds the shared personal skill parser and resolver package, plus
reusable skill-name validation exported from `workspacesdk`.

The parser enforces the full personal skill contract: max raw size,
kebab-case name, max name length, and non-empty body.

## Why?

The rest of the stack needs one source-aware resolver for personal and
workspace skills, including collision handling and qualified aliases.
Keeping personal skill constraints in the parser prevents callers from
accidentally parsing invalid personal skills.

(`coderd/x/chatd/chattool/stopworkspace.go`). Mirrors `start_workspace`:
shares `WorkspaceMu` to serialize with create/start, waits for any
in-progress build before issuing a stop, and is idempotent only after a
successful Stop transition. Failed stop builds re-attempt rather than
reporting success.

**New `chatStopWorkspace` coderd hook** (`coderd/exp_chats.go`). Mirrors
`chatStartWorkspace` minus the `RequireActiveVersion` gate. Stop should
not be blocked by template version policy.

**Differentiated recovery sentinels** (`coderd/x/chatd/chatd.go`).
`errChatAgentDisconnected` instructs the model to call `stop_workspace`
then `start_workspace`. `errChatDialTimeout` instructs a single retry,
then user escalation if it repeats. The previous single message
conflated transient and persistent failures.

**Two-signal recovery gate.** Recovery is only surfaced when a tool call
times out *and* a fresh DB read of the latest workspace agent says
`Disconnected`. The previous draft escalated on the DB read alone, which
would fire on a 30-second heartbeat blip (e.g. agent respawn) and prompt
a destructive stop/start unnecessarily.

**Cache-hit disconnected handling** now clears the cache and retries a
fresh dial before escalating, rather than returning the recovery
sentinel immediately. Latest-agent classification uses
`GetWorkspaceAgentsInLatestBuildByWorkspaceID` instead of the chat's
bound `AgentID`, so stale bindings after a rebuild don't misclassify.

**Shared chattool helpers** in `coderd/x/chatd/chattool/chattool.go`:
`latestWorkspaceBuildAndJob`, `publishBuildBinding`,
`provisionerJobTerminal`. Applied to both `start_workspace` and
`stop_workspace`.

## Notes

- Reverts an earlier draft that widened `ask_user_question` to root
standard turns. Plan-mode-only behavior is restored.
- The `stop_workspace` tool currently renders via the generic chat
tool-call UI. A follow-up frontend PR will prettify the `stop_workspace`
tool and style it like the `start_workspace` tool.
- Never-connected (`Timeout` status) agents are intentionally excluded
from recovery. They indicate template or startup failure, not the
running-but-dead case this PR targets.

Ethan de9cdca77e fix(coderd): handle external-agent workspaces honestly in chat (#24969)
## Summary

Make Coder's chat agent honest about workspaces that use
`coder_external_agent`. Three behaviors change so the chat stops
pretending it can drive an external workspace through to a usable state
on its own.

<img width="859" height="537" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/0561442b-95f1-4a2d-853c-7e3776114680"
/>

## Problem

External agents are not started by Coder. The user has to run `coder
agent` on their own host with a token Coder generates. Before this
change, the chat agent treated those workspaces like any other:

- `create_workspace` would enqueue a build for an external-agent
template and then wait minutes (~22 worst case) for an agent that was
never going to come up.
- When mid-turn tool calls dialed an external agent that was not
connected, the chat burned the full 30-second dial timeout and returned
generic "the workspace may need to be restarted from the Coder
dashboard" guidance, which is not the action the user can take.
- Nothing told the chat (or the user, through the chat) that the next
action lives outside Coder.

## Fix

Three changes scoped to `coderd/x/chatd/`:

1. **`create_workspace` blocks templates with external agents.** The
tool reads `template_versions.has_external_agent` for the template's
active version and refuses external-agent templates with a message
instructing the chat to pick a different template, or to have the user
create and start the workspace themselves and then attach it.

2. **Attaching an existing external workspace stays open.** No
selection-time gate on attachment; users can still bind a working
external workspace to a chat.

3. **External-agent-aware error handling on connection.** Two
complementary changes both predicated on proven connectivity failures
rather than every dial error:

- **`getWorkspaceConn` preflight and timeout handling.** Before opening
a connection, the cache-miss path reads the agent's status from the
already-loaded row. If the selected agent is external and clearly
offline according to the existing `isAgentUnreachable` helper
(`Disconnected` or `Timeout`, never `Connecting`), it returns an
external-agent-specific error immediately instead of waiting out the
30-second dial timeout. `Connecting` external agents fall through to the
dial so a user who just started the agent on their host can still
succeed in the same turn. The preflight only fires when the agent is
still the latest selected agent for the workspace, so stale-binding
recovery via `dialWithLazyValidation` is unaffected. The post-dial
rewrite is limited to the dial timeout sentinel; stale/no-agent bindings
and non-timeout dial failures preserve their original errors.

- **`waitForAgentReady` timeout-branch rewrite.** The 2-minute retry
loop used by `create_workspace` and `start_workspace` runs unchanged for
all agents. When the loop's outer deadline elapses, the timeout branch
substitutes the external-agent message in place of the raw dial error if
the agent belongs to an external resource.

This applies the same pattern that the cache-hit path of
`getWorkspaceConn` already used (`isAgentUnreachable` returning
`errChatAgentDisconnected`), extended to the cache-miss path and to the
readiness helper, with the external-agent-aware error rewrite layered
only on confirmed offline or timeout paths.

Ethan ef0151601e feat: report insufficient quota build failures in chat tools (#24956)
## Summary

When a workspace build fails because the user is over their group quota,
the chat tools currently surface the failure as a bare `"workspace build
failed: insufficient quota"` string with no machine-readable error code
and no visibility into the user's current usage. Agents and the UI
cannot distinguish quota failures from any other Terraform error, so
users see an opaque message and have no clear path to recovery.

This PR tags quota failures with a typed error code at the source and
propagates it through the chat tool layer so callers can react to it
explicitly.

Relates to CODAGT-20

## Changes

**Provisioner runner**

- Add `InsufficientQuotaErrorCode = "INSUFFICIENT_QUOTA"` and set it
explicitly at the `commitQuota` failure site via a new
`failedWorkspaceBuildfCode` helper, so `provisioner_jobs.error_code` is
populated only on the genuine quota path. The substring matcher used for
externally produced sentinels (e.g. `"missing parameter"`, `"required
template variables"`) is intentionally not extended; provider errors
that happen to mention "insufficient quota" stay classified as generic
build failures.

**SDK and API contract**

- Add `JobErrorCodeInsufficientQuota` and a
`JobIsInsufficientQuotaErrorCode` helper to `codersdk`.
- Extend the swagger `enums` tag on `ProvisionerJob.ErrorCode` to
include `INSUFFICIENT_QUOTA`.
- Regenerate `coderd/apidoc`, `docs/reference/api/*`, and
`site/src/api/typesGenerated.ts`.

**chattool create_workspace / start_workspace**

- `waitForBuild` now returns a typed `*workspaceBuildError` carrying
both the message and the `JobErrorCode`, instead of a bare error string.
- New `quotaerror.go` introduces a structured `quotaErrorResult` (with
`error_code`, `title`, `message`, `build_id`, and optional `quota`) and
a best-effort `workspaceQuotaDetails` lookup that wraps owner
authorization internally and fetches `credits_consumed` and `budget`
from the database. Quota lookup failures (including authorization
failures) never block the failure payload.
- On quota-coded build failures, both `create_workspace` and
`start_workspace` now return the structured response (with the recovery
guidance inlined into `message`) instead of the bare `"insufficient
quota"` string. This applies to all three failure paths: post-creation,
an in-progress existing build, and a freshly triggered start build.
Non-quota build failures continue to use the existing
`buildToolResponse` / `newBuildError` path.
- Owner authorization is wrapped only on the call sites that need it
(the `CreateFn` and `StartFn` invocations and the quota-detail lookup),
so idempotent fast paths (already running, already in progress,
existing-workspace early returns) do not pay for an extra RBAC
round-trip or fail when role lookup is transient.

## Out of scope

- No changes to quota math, allowances, or bypass behavior.
- No automatic retries.
- No new quota-inspection tools and no changes to MCP
`coder_create_workspace` (which returns immediately and never observed
the build outcome here).
- No frontend UI changes; those will land in a follow-up PR that
consumes the new `INSUFFICIENT_QUOTA` code.

Addresses a review finding in https://github.com/coder/coder/pull/23827

code in practice in the `chattool` package.

- Modifies the return signatures require passing both `database.Store`

parameter struct keys.

Michael Suchacz 0bb09935bc feat: add computer-use provider selection for AI agents (#24772)
Adds a deployment-wide setting to select the computer-use provider
(Anthropic or OpenAI) for AI agents, plus the OpenAI computer-use runner
needed to honor that selection.

The setting is stored in `site_configs` under
`agents_computer_use_provider`, defaults to Anthropic when unset, and is
exposed via experimental GET/PUT endpoints under
`/api/experimental/chats/config/computer-use-provider`. The chatd
computer-use tool now dispatches to either `runAnthropicComputerUse` or
`runOpenAIComputerUse` based on the resolved provider, with
provider-specific result metadata for OpenAI screenshots.

Frontend adds a provider dropdown to the Agents Experiments settings
page nested under the virtual desktop toggle, with disabled state
handling while virtual desktop is off and skeleton loaders while config
queries are in flight.

Hugo and Codex review follow-up:
- Uses shared provider validation and clearer computer-use constant
names.
- Removes stale OpenAI pending-safety-checks commentary.
- Documents why provider result metadata is needed for OpenAI
screenshots.
- Keeps the computer-use subagent visible when provider credentials are
missing, then returns a clear spawn-time configuration error.
- Uses OpenAI's recommended 1600x900 screenshot geometry to preserve the
native 16:9 aspect ratio.
- Moves OpenAI-specific computer-use helpers into
`coderd/x/chatd/chatopenai/computeruse` after rebasing onto the provider
package refactor in `main`.
- Converts OpenAI pixel scroll deltas to Coder desktop wheel-click
amounts.
- Preserves OpenAI pointer modifiers with key down/up desktop actions
and rejects unsupported non-left double-click buttons explicitly.
- Maps OpenAI back/forward side-button clicks to browser navigation key
actions.
- Defaults omitted OpenAI click buttons to left-click.
- Retries mouse release cleanup if the final OpenAI drag release fails.
- Keeps computer-use subagent availability messages stable when provider
config cannot be loaded, while logging the backend error.
- Releases remaining OpenAI modifier keys if a synthetic key-up cleanup
action fails.
- Updates Storybook interaction stories so provider snapshots show the
selected final provider.

04cc983833 fix: add preset support to MCP tools (#24694)
The chat tools (`read_template`, `create_workspace`) did not surface or
respect template version presets. Presets were invisible to the LLM and
preset parameter defaults were never applied at workspace creation. The
`toolsdk` MCP surface had the same gap (ref #24695, now subsumed here).

## What this changes

- **`read_template`** returns presets with `id`, `name`, `default`,
`description`, `icon`, `parameters`, and `desired_prebuild_instances`
(when set), so the LLM can pick the right preset and prefer
prebuilt-backed ones.
- **`create_workspace`** accepts a `preset_id`. The wsbuilder applies
preset parameter defaults and may claim a prebuilt workspace.
- **`start_workspace`** does *not* accept a preset. Presets are a
creation-time choice; subsequent starts use the workspace's existing
version and parameters. Users who need a specific preset or version on
an existing chat can create the workspace out-of-band (CLI / UI / API)
with the desired configuration and attach the chat to it.
- **`toolsdk`** gains `GetTemplate` (with presets including
`desired_prebuild_instances`), preset support on `CreateWorkspace`, and
preset + `rich_parameters` support on `CreateWorkspaceBuild`. The
`template_version_preset_id` description warns about preset/version
affinity.

Mathias Fredriksson 881df9a5b0 feat: reload MCP config on change via lazy stat-on-request (#24700)
The MCP manager previously read .mcp.json exactly once at agent startup.
Editing the file had no effect until workspace rebuild or agent restart.

handleListTools now stats config file mtimes on every tool-list request
and triggers a differential reload when any file changed. Unchanged
servers keep their client pointer so in-flight tool calls survive.
Concurrent reload requests coalesce via singleflight.

MCP stdio subprocesses use the agent's execer for resource limits and
receive the same enriched environment as SSH sessions via updateEnv.

On the chatd side, WorkspaceMCPTool.Run detects 404 responses from
CallMCPTool (indicating the server was removed) and drops the chat's
cached tool list so the next turn refetches from the agent.

Ethan 1203f625b7 feat(coderd): accept parameters in start_workspace tool (#24434)
When the chat `start_workspace` tool triggers an active-version upgrade
that introduces new required parameters, the build fails with a
parameter validation error. Previously this returned a message telling
the user to update from the UI — a dead end for the model.

This PR lets the model recover inside the chat by:

1. Accepting an optional `parameters` map on `start_workspace` (same
schema as `create_workspace`), forwarded as `RichParameterValues`.
2. Returning structured JSON error responses that preserve validation
details and the workspace's `template_id`, so the model can call
`read_template` to discover what changed.
3. Replacing the UI-only guidance in `exp_chats.go` with
model-actionable retry instructions.

The expected model flow on an active-version parameter failure is now:

```
start_workspace → fails (structured error with template_id + validations)
read_template   → discovers new required parameters
start_workspace → retries with parameters map → workspace starts
```

Ethan ef6969dd70 feat(coderd/x/chatd): agent-created file attachments in chat (#24280)
Agents can already see workspace files and take screenshots, but users could not download those artifacts from chat. This PR adds durable chat attachments to chatd. `attach_file`, explicit `computer` screenshot actions (not the automatic post-action screenshots), and `propose_plan` now fetch bytes over the agent connection, store them in `chat_files`, link them to the chat, and carry attachment metadata in tool responses so `buildAssistantPartsForPersist` can materialize ordinary `type:"file"` assistant parts that the chat file APIs serve.

The same storage helpers are reused for other artifact-producing paths. `wait_agent` recordings and thumbnails are stored as chat files and linked back to the parent chat, with best-effort relinking so parent chats retain those artifacts without leaving orphaned rows when chat-file caps reject links. `storeChatAttachment` wraps insert + link in one transaction, files are capped at 10 MB each and 20 per chat, and serving defaults to `Content-Disposition: attachment` with an explicit inline-safe allowlist.

This PR also consolidates chat-file media policy in `coderd/chatfiles`. Uploads and tool-generated attachments share byte-based MIME detection, SVG blocking, inline-safety rules, and compatible `text/plain` refinement for JSON, CSV, and Markdown. Prompt construction still only inlines synthetic pasted text for model consumption; assistant-created attachments are persisted for the user and intentionally not replayed into later LLM turns.

UI follow-up lives in #24281.

Mathias Fredriksson 6b0bb02e5d fix: server-side diffs and stricter fuzzy splicing for edit_files (#24454)
Fixes three classes of edit_files bugs and adds structured per-file
diff output for tool callers:

- New IncludeDiff flag on FileEditRequest; when set, the agent
returns FileEditResponse.Files[]{Path, Diff} with unified diffs
computed via go-udiff v0.4.1 Lines + ToUnified (not Unified,
which calls log.Fatalf on internal error).
- Fuzzy match comparators split each line into leading whitespace,
body, trailing whitespace, and ending. The splice substitutes at
each position: on agreement between search and replace the file's
bytes win; on disagreement the replacement's bytes are spliced
verbatim. Carve-outs for empty-body lines, multi-line EOF splices,
and level-aware indent translation for inserted lines.
- Indent-unit detection (GCD for spaces, tab-priority) lets a 4sp
LLM search insert correctly into tab or 2sp files. Falls back to
the previous cLead-inheritance path when units can't be detected
  cleanly.
- Empty search is rejected with "search string must not be empty".
- Duplicate file paths in one request are rejected; symlink aliases
resolved via api.resolvePath before the dedup check.
- Frontend EditFilesRenderer consumes the structured files array by
explicit path (no label munging) with per-file synthetic fallback
for older agents or mismatched paths. On error, no diff is
rendered so the synthetic fallback doesn't misrepresent a
  rejected edit as applied.

Breaking change: AgentConn.EditFiles changes from (ctx, req) error
to (ctx, req) (FileEditResponse, error) in codersdk/workspacesdk.
Source-breaking for external Go consumers; no compat shim per plan
owner.

Out of scope (tracked in CODAGT-214): level-aware indent for
middle-substituted splice lines. Locked in
TestEditFiles_FuzzyIndent_InsertionLevelAware's Lock_* cases plus
TestEditFiles_ReplaceAll_FuzzyIndentGap.

Ethan 91b35a25ee fix(coderd): auto-update workspace to active template version on chat start (#24424)
## Problem

When a template has `require_active_version` enabled and the chat agent
tries to start a workspace that is stopped on an older template version,
the agent gets stuck in an infinite loop: `start_workspace` fails with a
403 (the old version is not the active version and the user lacks
`ActionUpdate` on the template), then `create_workspace` sees the
existing stopped workspace and tells the agent to use `start_workspace`,
repeat forever.

The root cause is that `chatStartWorkspace()` passes the start build
request through without setting `TemplateVersionID`, so `wsbuilder`
defaults to the previous build's template version — which RBAC rejects
when `RequireActiveVersion` is true.

## Fix

In `chatStartWorkspace()` (`coderd/exp_chats.go`), when the template's
access control has `RequireActiveVersion` enabled, explicitly set
`req.TemplateVersionID` to `template.ActiveVersionID` before calling
`postWorkspaceBuildsInternal()`. This mirrors how the autobuild executor
handles the same scenario (`coderd/autobuild/lifecycle_executor.go`).

If the new active version introduces required parameters that cannot be
resolved automatically (no defaults, no previous values), the build
fails at parameter validation before a provisioner job is created. In
that case, a clear error message tells the user to update and start the
workspace from the UI instead of surfacing a raw internal error.

On successful auto-update, the tool response includes
`updated_to_active_version`, `update_reason`, and a human-readable
`message` so the model can explain to the user what happened.

### Changes

- **`coderd/exp_chats.go`**: `chatStartWorkspace()` loads the template,
checks `RequireActiveVersion` via `AccessControlStore`, and pins the
build to the active version when required. New
`isChatStartWorkspaceManualUpdateRequiredError()` classifies parameter
validation failures from both the dynamic parameters path
(`DiagnosticError`) and the classic path (`ErrParameterValidation`
sentinel).
- **`coderd/wsbuilder/wsbuilder.go`**: New `ErrParameterValidation`
sentinel error, wrapped into the classic parameter validation
`BuildError` so callers can use `errors. Is` instead of string matching.
- **`coderd/x/chatd/chattool/startworkspace.go`**:
`waitForAgentAndRespond` now returns `map[string]any` instead of
`fantasy.ToolResponse`, letting the caller annotate the result (e.g.
auto-update metadata) before converting. Error handling for `StartFn`
checks for `httperror.Responder` errors to surface clean messages for
the manual-update case.
- **`coderd/x/chatd/chattool/startworkspace_test.go`**: Two new tests —
`StoppedWorkspaceReportsAutoUpdate` (verifies auto-update fields in
response) and `ManualUpdateRequired` (verifies clean error message
without internal wrapping).

### Follow-up

The manual-update error message could include a direct link to the
workspace settings page, but the chattool layer does not currently have
access to the deployment's access URL. Plumbing it through is
straightforward but out of scope for this fix.

Dean Sheather 3452ab3166 chore: add client_type field to chats and telemetry (#24342)
Add a `chat_client_type` enum (`ui` | `api`) and `client_type` column to
the `chats` table. The column defaults to `api` for new rows so API
callers don't need to set it explicitly. Existing rows are backfilled to
`ui`.

The field flows through `CreateChatRequest`, `chatd.CreateOptions`,
`InsertChat`, and is returned in the `Chat` response via `db2sdk`.

<details>
<summary>Implementation notes (Coder Agents generated)</summary>

### Changes

**Database migration (000469)**
- New enum `chat_client_type` with values `ui`, `api`.
- New `client_type` column, `NOT NULL DEFAULT 'api'`.
- Backfill: `UPDATE chats SET client_type = 'ui'`.

**SQL query** — `InsertChat` now includes `client_type`.

**SDK** — `ChatClientType` type added; `ClientType` field added to both
`CreateChatRequest` (optional, defaults server-side to `api`) and `Chat`
response.

**Handler** — `postChats` maps the request field (defaulting to `api`)
and passes it through `chatd.CreateOptions`.

**Sub-agent** — Child chats inherit their parent's `client_type`.

**db2sdk** — Maps the database value to the SDK type.

### Decision log
- Default is `api` (not `ui`) so existing API integrations get the
correct value without code changes.
- Backfill sets existing rows to `ui` per requirement.
- Child chats inherit `client_type` from parent rather than defaulting.

Kyle Carberry d11849d94a fix: re-fetch context files and skills from workspace on each turn (#24360)
Context files (AGENTS.md) and skills were only fetched from the
workspace on the first turn or when the agent changed. On subsequent
turns, stale content from persisted messages was used. This meant that
if AGENTS.md or skills were modified on the workspace between turns, the
agent wouldn't see the changes until the user created a new chat.

## Changes

- Extract `fetchWorkspaceContext` from `persistInstructionFiles` to
allow fetching workspace context without persisting
- On subsequent turns, re-fetch fresh context from the workspace instead
of reading stale persisted content; falls back to persisted messages if
the workspace dial fails
- Update `ReloadMessages` callback to re-derive instruction and skills
from reloaded database messages after compaction, instead of using
captured closure variables
- Add `formatSystemInstructionsFromParts` helper to build system
instructions directly from agent parts without requiring separate
OS/directory params
- Add tests for the new helper

<details><summary>Implementation Notes</summary>

### Root cause

In `runChat`, the `else if hasContextFiles` branch (subsequent turns)
called `instructionFromContextFiles(messages)` which read stale content
from persisted DB messages. The `ReloadMessages` callback
(post-compaction) also used captured `instruction`/`skills` closure
variables from the start of the turn, never re-deriving them.

### Approach

1. **Extract `fetchWorkspaceContext`** — Pure refactor of the fetch-only
part of `persistInstructionFiles` (agent connection, context config
retrieval, content sanitization, metadata stamping). Returns parts +
skills without persisting.

2. **Subsequent turns**: Instead of reading from persisted messages,
launch a `g2` goroutine that calls `fetchWorkspaceContext` to get fresh
context from the workspace. Falls back gracefully to persisted messages
if the workspace is unreachable.

3. **ReloadMessages**: Re-derive `instruction` from
`instructionFromContextFiles(reloadedMsgs)` and `skills` from
`skillsFromParts(reloadedMsgs)` using the freshly loaded messages, with
fallback to captured values if the reloaded messages don't contain
context (e.g. compacted away).

Cian Johnston 6194bd6f57 fix: address post-merge review findings for chat org scoping (#24297)
Addresses review findings from #23827 that were added post-merge:

- Persisted attachments now store `organizationId`; mismatched orgs
pruned on restore
- Workspace selection reconciliation: stale IDs from previous orgs
dropped via derived `effectiveWorkspaceId`
- Org picker uses `permittedOrganizations()` for RBAC-aware filtering
- Org picker hidden when user belongs to only one org
- Ref-sync `useEffect` replaced with `useEffectEvent`
- `CreateWorkspace()` and `ListTemplates()` take `organizationID` and
`db` as required function parameters instead of optional struct fields —
compiler enforces them, removes scattered nil guards
- Cross-org template check in `CreateWorkspace` is now unconditional
- `ListTemplates` org-scoping filter now has test coverage
- `setupChatInfra` comment fixed; test helpers use params structs
instead of positional UUIDs
- Enterprise test documents that org admin only sees own chats (handler
hardcodes `OwnerID` — future work needs sidebar UI before lifting that
restriction)

Callum StyanandClaude Sonnet 4.6 730edba87a fix: fix false positive disconnected agent metric reporting (#24225)
We noticed during higher active workspace counts that the agent
connection metric, generated via a query to the database, would report a
relatively high amount of agents as disconnected. Somewhere between 5
and 20%. However, other metrics such as # of websocket connections would
suggest that all agent connections are healthy.

Looking at the `Agents` function in prometheus metrics, plus the query
execution time (not accounting for actual database RT time) revealed
that this reporting of agents as disconnected was almost certainly false
positives due to clock drift in the way we're generating the metric
values. At 10k metrics, with a p50 of 2ms and p99 of 5ms, the entire
`agents` function could take upwards of 50s to execute. Because we were
doing a query/database RT to query th apps for each agent individually,
and grabbing a `time. Now` value on each iteration of that loop, it's
likely the portion of agents that were reported as disconnected were
those that had last heartbeat the furthest in the past.

The fix here is to set a consistent `now` before fetching agent data to
avoid clock drift inflating the inactive timeout comparison, and replace
the per-agent app query N+1 with a single batched lookup to prevent loop
execution time from pushing agents over the disconnected threshold.

Michael Suchacz a554de372a fix: use per-chat plan file paths (#24268)
> This PR was authored by Mux on behalf of Mike.

Chats sharing one workspace (e.g. sibling subagents) all wrote to
`/home/coder/PLAN.md`, causing plan file collisions. This change derives
a unique plan path per chat from the workspace home directory and chat
ID.

## Changes

* `write_file`, `edit_files`, and `propose_plan` reject any `plan.md`
variant (case-insensitive) at the workspace home root, with a clear
error pointing to the chat-specific path.
* Root chats receive a `<plan-file-path>` block inlined in the main
system prompt with the concrete path.
* Prompt and tool descriptions no longer hardcode `/home/coder/PLAN.md`.
* Plan path handling is POSIX-only (forward-slash), relying on the
contract that workspace agent paths are normalized before reaching
chatd.
* Updated `ProposePlanTool.stories.tsx` to use per-chat path examples.
* Full test coverage for plan path detection, legacy-path rejection in
all three tools, inline prompt rendering, and fallback behavior.

Kyle Carberry 919dc299fc feat: agent reads context files and discovers skills locally (#23935)
Piggybacks on #23878. Moves instruction file reading and skill discovery
from `chatd` (server-side, via multiple `LS`/`ReadFile` round-trips
through the agent connection) to the agent itself (local filesystem
access).

This intentionally drops backward compatibility with older agents that
don't support the context-config endpoint. Agents and server are
deployed together; there is no rolling-update contract to maintain here.

## What changed

The agent's `GET /api/v0/context-config` response now returns
`[]ChatMessagePart` directly — the same types chatd persists. This
eliminates intermediate type conversions and makes the protocol
extensible.

| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `parts` | `[]ChatMessagePart` | Context-file and skill parts, ready to
persist |
| `working_dir` | `string` | Agent's resolved working directory |

Removed from the response: `instructions_dirs`, `instructions_file`,
`skills_dirs`, `skill_meta_file`, `mcp_config_files` — the agent reads
files locally and returns their content as parts.

Removed from chatd: all legacy `LS`/`ReadFile` fallback code
(`readHomeInstructionFile`, `readInstructionDirFile`, `DiscoverSkills`
via LS, etc).

## Why

The previous architecture had the agent resolve paths, serve them over
HTTP, then `chatd` make N+1 round-trips back through the agent
connection to read files. The agent has direct filesystem access and
should just read the files.

## Key design decisions

- **Agent returns `ChatMessagePart` directly** — same types chatd
persists. No intermediate `InstructionFileEntry`/`SkillEntry` types
needed.
- **`SkillMeta.MetaFile`** — persisted via `ContextFileSkillMetaFile` on
the skill part, so custom meta file names
(`CODER_AGENT_EXP_SKILL_META_FILE`) survive across chat turns.
- **No pre-read body** — `read_skill` always dials the workspace to
fetch the skill body on demand. Simpler than caching the body in the
response.
- **MCP config paths kept agent-internal** — `MCPConfigFiles()` getter,
not sent over the wire.
- **No backward compat fallback** — old agents that don't support
context-config get no instruction files. This is acceptable since agent
and server deploy together.

Ethan 7757cd8e08 refactor(coderd/x/chatd): insert chats directly as pending on creation (#23888)
Previously, `CreateChat` inserted the `chats` row with the DB default
status (`waiting`), then updated it to `pending` in the same transaction
via `setChatPendingWithStore`. This wasted two extra queries per chat
creation (`GetChatByID` + `UpdateChatStatus`) and rewrote the same row
immediately after inserting it.

Now `CreateChat` passes the status directly to `InsertChat`, so the row
is written once in its final create-time state. The
`setChatPendingWithStore` helper is removed entirely. `InsertChat` now
requires an explicit `status` parameter at all callsites instead of
relying on a DB column default.

## Motivation

On an experimental branch we're trialing firing all chatd notifications
from plpgsql triggers. The old two-step insert made that awkward: in an
`AFTER INSERT` trigger, `NEW` only contained the insert-time row
(`waiting`), not the final committed state (`pending`). To emit the
correct event payload the trigger had to be deferred and re-read the row
from `chats` at commit time.

With this change, `NEW` already contains the correct row to publish — no
deferred trigger, no extra `SELECT`, simpler and cheaper trigger logic.

That said, this seems like a worthwhile change regardless of the trigger
experiment: writing the final row state once removes unnecessary DB work
on every chat creation and makes the create path easier to reason about.

Kyle Carberry ee855f9618 feat: make agent context paths configurable via env vars (#23878)
Replace hardcoded paths for instruction files, skills, and MCP config
with
values read from `CODER_AGENT_EXP_*` environment variables. Template
authors
configure paths via the existing `coder_agent` `env` block. The agent
resolves `~`, relative, and absolute paths locally, then serves the
resolved config over `GET /api/v0/context-config`. `chatd` fetches this
once per workspace attach and falls back to today's defaults for older
agents.

All path env vars are comma-separated, allowing multiple directories:

| Env Var | Default | Controls |
|---|---|---|
| `CODER_AGENT_EXP_INSTRUCTIONS_DIRS` | `~/.coder` | Dirs containing the
instruction file |
| `CODER_AGENT_EXP_INSTRUCTIONS_FILE` | `AGENTS.md` | Instruction file
name |
| `CODER_AGENT_EXP_SKILLS_DIRS` | `.agents/skills` | Skills directories
|
| `CODER_AGENT_EXP_SKILL_META_FILE` | `SKILL.md` | Skill metadata file
name |
| `CODER_AGENT_EXP_MCP_CONFIG_FILES` | `.mcp.json` | MCP config files |

### Example

```hcl
resource "coder_agent" "main" {
  os   = "linux"
  arch = "amd64"
  env = {
    CODER_AGENT_EXP_INSTRUCTIONS_DIRS  = "/opt/company/agent-config,~/.coder"
    CODER_AGENT_EXP_INSTRUCTIONS_FILE  = "CLAUDE.md"
    CODER_AGENT_EXP_SKILLS_DIRS        = "/opt/company/ai-skills,.agents/skills"
    CODER_AGENT_EXP_MCP_CONFIG_FILES   = "/opt/company/mcp.json,.mcp.json"
  }
}
```

<details>
<summary>Implementation Details</summary>

### Architecture

Follows the same pattern as MCP tool discovery:
agent resolves locally → exposes via HTTP → chatd consumes.

**Agent-side** (`agent/agentcontextconfig/`):
- `ResolvePath` / `ResolvePaths` handle `~`, relative, and absolute path
forms; returns `""` for relative paths when baseDir is empty
- `Config` reads env vars, falls back to defaults, resolves all paths
- `GET /api/v0/context-config` serves the resolved config as JSON

**chatd-side** (`coderd/x/chatd/`):
- Calls `conn.ContextConfig()` once on first workspace attach
- Falls back to hardcoded defaults on 404 (older agents)
- Iterates instruction dirs, skills dirs using resolved absolute paths
- `LSRelativityRoot` everywhere — no more home/root juggling

### Key design decisions

- **`EXP_` prefix**: env vars use `CODER_AGENT_EXP_*` to indicate
experimental status
- **Plural names**: comma-separated vars use plural names (`DIRS`,
`FILES`); single-value vars use singular (`FILE`)
- **Defaults in `workspacesdk`**: default constants live in
`codersdk/workspacesdk/` so both agent and server reference them without
cross-layer imports
- **`skillMetaFile` persistence**: stored on context-file parts via
`ContextFileSkillMetaFile` and restored on subsequent chat turns so
custom values survive across turns
- **Working dir dedup**: `slices.Contains` guard prevents reading the
same instruction file from both `InstructionsDirs` and the working
directory
- **MCP server dedup**: first-occurrence-wins dedup prevents leaking
duplicate connections from overlapping config files
- **ResolvePath safety**: returns `""` for relative paths when `baseDir`
is empty, so `ResolvePaths` filters them out

### Files changed

| File | Change |
|---|---|
| `agent/agentcontextconfig/` | New package — path resolution + HTTP
endpoint |
| `codersdk/workspacesdk/agentconn.go` | `ContextConfigResponse` type,
default constants, client method |
| `agent/agent.go` + `agent/api.go` | Wire up endpoint, pass config to
MCP |
| `agent/x/agentmcp/manager.go` | Accept `[]string` MCP config paths,
dedup by name |
| `coderd/x/chatd/chatd.go` | Fetch config, thread through, named
returns |
| `coderd/x/chatd/instruction.go` | Accept configurable dir + file name,
`skillMetaFileFromParts` |
| `coderd/x/chatd/chattool/skill.go` | Accept configurable dirs + meta
file |
| `codersdk/chats.go` | `ContextFileSkillMetaFile` field for persistence
|

### Test coverage

- `TestConfig` (4 cases): defaults, custom env vars, whitespace
trimming, comma-separated dirs
- `TestResolvePath` / `TestResolvePaths`: including empty baseDir edge
case
- `TestPersistInstructionFilesFallbackOnOlderAgent`: backward-compat
path when `ContextConfig` returns 404
- `TestChatMessagePartVariantTags`: updated exclusion list for new
internal field

### Backward compatibility

Older agents return 404 for the new endpoint. `chatd` catches this and
falls back to today's defaults via `readHomeInstructionFile` (using
`LSRelativityHome`). Existing workspaces work with no changes.

Michael Suchacz 73f6cd8169 feat: suffix-based chat agent selection (#23741)
Adds suffix-based agent selection for chatd. Template authors can direct
chat traffic to a specific root workspace agent by naming it with the
`-coderd-chat` suffix (for example, `coder_agent "dev-coderd-chat"`).
When no suffix match exists, chatd falls back to the first root agent by
`DisplayOrder`, then `Name`. Multiple suffix matches return an error.

The selection logic lives in `coderd/x/chatd/internal/agentselect` and
is shared by chatd core plus the workspace chat tools so all chat entry
points pick the same agent deterministically.

No database migrations, API contract changes, or provider changes. The
experimental sandbox template was split out to #23777.
