Replaces the v2.10 `PushContextState` stub with a real coderd write
path. Phase 1 of the chat-side persistence story; nothing reads these
rows yet.
Follows [#25983](https://github.com/coder/coder/pull/25983) and unblocks
[CODAGT-569](https://linear.app/codercom/issue/CODAGT-569/enable-agent-api-v210-pushcontextstate-bump-currentminor-wire-coderd).
## What ships
### Schema (`000517_workspace_agent_context.{up,down}.sql`)
Two new tables plus `api_key_scope` enum extensions:
- `workspace_agent_context_snapshots` (PK `workspace_agent_id` to
`workspace_agents(id) ON DELETE CASCADE`): one row per agent,
overwritten per push. Holds `version`, `schema_version`,
`aggregate_hash`, `snapshot_error`, `received_at`.
- `workspace_agent_context_resources` (PK `(workspace_agent_id,
source)`): per-resource state. `body_kind` and `status` are `TEXT` +
`CHECK` so adding new wire kinds (the RFC's reserved
PLUGIN/HOOK/SUBAGENT/COMMAND) is a one-line CHECK update plus a Go
switch case.
### SQLC queries (`coderd/database/queries/workspaceagentcontext.sql`)
- `UpsertWorkspaceAgentContextSnapshot`
- `UpsertWorkspaceAgentContextResource`
- `DeleteStaleWorkspaceAgentContextResources`
(delete-where-source-not-in)
- `GetLatestWorkspaceAgentContextSnapshot`
- `ListWorkspaceAgentContextResources`
### Handler (`coderd/agentapi/context.go`)
`ContextAPI` is a new sub-API. `PushContextState`:
1. Rejects `schema_version > 1` with a non-`Unimplemented` error so a
forward-incompatible agent fails loudly during rollout instead of
slipping into the permanent fallback path the `Unimplemented`
translation reserves for old coderd deployments.
2. Validates resources: no empty/duplicate sources, every variant maps
to a known body kind, every status maps to a known enum value, the
`Body` oneof is set (even when status is non-OK, mirroring the wire
guarantee so coderd can attribute failures to a known kind).
3. Inside `Database.InTx`, reads the existing snapshot. If the push is
not `initial` and `version` is not strictly greater, returns `accepted =
false` and leaves stored state untouched. Otherwise upserts the snapshot
row, upserts each resource, then runs the stale-source prune so the
snapshot and resource rows always agree.
4. Returns `accepted = true` on success.
Resource bodies are stored as `protojson(body oneof variant)` in `body
JSONB` with `body_kind` as the discriminator. Adding a new field to an
existing variant is zero work since `protojson` tolerates new fields;
adding a new variant is a CHECK + switch case.
### RBAC + dbauthz
- New `ResourceWorkspaceAgentContext` (Create/Read/Update/Delete).
- New `SubjectTypeAgentContext` plus `subjectAgentContext` system role
and `dbauthz.AsAgentContext` helper. The push handler elevates to this
subject; the agent's own role does not get direct write access to the
table.
- New `workspace_agent_context:*` API key scopes registered in the enum
migration; internal-only (not added to `externalLowLevel`).
### Audit
These rows are agent-pushed state, not user-authored. They are
intentionally not added to `AuditActionMap` and not enumerated in
`enterprise/audit/table.go`, matching `boundary_logs`,
`workspace_agent_memory_resource_monitor`, etc. `enterprise/audit` tests
pass unchanged.
## Tests
- `coderd/agentapi/context_test.go`: 12 subtests covering
accepts/rejects (schema version, empty/duplicate source, unknown status,
missing body), version semantics (stale dropped, same-version replay
dropped, `initial=true` overwrites lower version), variant coverage,
non-OK status persistence, and the empty-active-set prune case.
- `coderd/database/dbauthz/dbauthz_test.go`: 5 `MethodTestSuite` cases
covering the new queries.
- `coderd/rbac/roles_test.go`: `WorkspaceAgentContext` permission row
asserting no human role currently has access.
-
`coderd/database/migrations/testdata/fixtures/000517_workspace_agent_context.up.sql`:
one snapshot + one resource per known body kind plus a non-OK status, so
the migration test suite never lands with these tables empty.
## Out of scope (later phases)
- Chat hydration (`chats.context_aggregate_hash`,
`last_injected_context`).
- Dirty-bit fan-out and `PUT /chats/{id}/context`.
- Agent-side `POST /api/v0/context/resync` barrier and the `coder exp
chat context` CLI.
- `codersdk` chat-context wire types and the dashboard Sources drawer.
- Removal of the chatd per-turn pull fallback.
## Compat property
This is a pure write path. If anything here returns errors the agent's
`RunPush` loop backs off, no chat behavior changes, and the workspace
keeps behaving exactly like it did before v2.10.

<summary>Implementation plan and decision log</summary>
Key design calls:
1. **Concurrency**: Accept iff `req.Initial || req.Version >
existing.Version`. The strict RFC reading ("version comparison is
authoritative") locks restarted agents out because their per-process
counter resets to 1; honoring `initial=true` reflects the real reboot
reality while still rejecting steady-state replays/out-of-order pushes.
2. **Body encoding**: `protojson` over the oneof variant body proto,
stored in JSONB with `body_kind` discriminator. Structured at the API/Go
layer, schema-tolerant at the storage layer, and Phase 2 readers
round-trip back via `protojson.Unmarshal`.
3. **Schema version rejection**: returns a normal error, not
`Unimplemented`. The agent's `RunPush` loop only short-circuits on
`Unimplemented`; that escape hatch is reserved for old coderd
deployments. A forward-incompatible agent should retry-and-back-off, not
flip the connection into permanent fallback.
4. **Validation strictness**: empty sources, duplicate sources,
`STATUS_UNSPECIFIED`, and missing `Body` oneof variants are rejected
before any write so a misbehaving agent cannot poison the snapshot
table. Phase 2 readers can trust every row maps to a known proto
variant.

_This PR was authored by Coder Agents on Kyle Carberry's behalf._
Adds the agent half of the workspace context sources RFC. The agent now
resolves instruction files, skills, and MCP configs into a typed
`Snapshot`, watches the relevant paths recursively, exposes the source
list over a workspace-agent HTTP API, and pushes each `Snapshot` to
coderd over a new `PushContextState` RPC on Agent API v2.10.
The coderd-side handler is a stub returning `Unimplemented` for now.
Real persistence to `workspace_agent_context`, chatd hydration on dirty
events, and the `KindMCPServer` MCP provider are tracked by
[CODAGT-569](https://linear.app/codercom/issue/CODAGT-569/enable-agent-api-v210-pushcontextstate-bump-currentminor-wire-coderd).
This matches the pattern used for v2.7 `ReportBoundaryLogs` in
[#21293](https://github.com/coder/coder/pull/21293), which bumped the
version and shipped a stub server so the wire and client could iterate
before the persistence layer landed.
## What ships
### agent/agentcontext (new package)
- `Source`, `Resource` (kinds `instruction_file`, `skill`, `mcp_config`,
`mcp_server` plus reserved `plugin`/`hook`/`subagent`/`command`),
`ResourceStatus`, `Snapshot`, `ComputeAggregateHash`.
- `Manager` owns the in-memory source list, performs the initial resolve
synchronously in `NewManager`, runs a re-resolve/watcher loop in `Run`,
exposes
`AddSource`/`RemoveSource`/`Sources`/`HasSource`/`Snapshot`/`SubscribeChanges`/`Resync`/`SeedSources`/`Close`.
- `Resolver` walks scan roots, classifies recognized files, enforces 64
KiB per-resource, 2 MiB aggregate, and 500-resource caps with
`StatusOversize`/`StatusExcluded`/`StatusUnreadable`/`StatusInvalid`
outcomes, skips `node_modules`/`vendor`/etc., validates symlink targets
stay inside the scan root, stamps `SourcePath` on user-derived
resources, and optionally pulls MCP server tool lists via an
`MCPProvider` interface. MCP config resources ship metadata only (size,
hash) so secrets in env blocks never leave the agent.
- `Watcher` is a recursive `fsnotify` wrapper with a 250 ms debounce,
dynamic arming of newly created directories, and an ENOSPC-tolerant
degraded mode that no-ops further syncs until the manager resyncs
explicitly.
- HTTP API for `GET/POST /sources`, `GET/DELETE /sources/{path}`, `POST
/resync` mounted at `/api/v0/context`.
- `Pusher` interface plus `RunPush` goroutine with exponential backoff
capped at 30 s. `DRPCPusher` adapts the generated `DRPCAgentClient210`
to `Pusher` and translates `drpcerr.Unimplemented` to
`ErrPushUnimplemented` so the push loop exits cleanly when talking to
coderd deployments that have not enabled the real handler.
### agent/proto (v2.10)
- New messages `ContextResource`, `PushContextStateRequest`,
`PushContextStateResponse` and the `PushContextState` RPC on `service
Agent`.
- Generated `DRPCAgentClient210` interface and
`codersdk/agentsdk.Client.ConnectRPC210` / `ConnectRPC210WithRole`.
- `tailnet/proto.CurrentMinor` bumped from `9` to `10`.
### Agent wiring
- `agent.Options.Client` declares both v2.9 and v2.10 connectors;
`run()` dials with `ConnectRPC210WithRole`.
- `apiConnRoutineManager` holds a `DRPCAgentClient210`. Existing v2.8
routines keep their narrower `DRPCAgentClient28` signature thanks to
interface embedding.
- `startAgentAPI210` is the v2.10 counterpart to `startAgentAPI` for
routines that need the new client. The push context state routine uses
it.
- A `contextManager` is constructed in `agent.init()`, seeded from the
existing `CODER_AGENT_EXP_*_DIRS` env vars, started in its own goroutine
under `gracefulCtx`, and closed in `agent.Close`.
- `handleManifest` calls `Manager.SeedSources` for sources rooted at the
manifest directory, then `Resync` after `manifest.Swap`, so the snapshot
reflects the workspace working directory immediately instead of waiting
for the next filesystem event.
- HTTP routes mounted at `/api/v0/context` when the manager is up.
### Coderd stub
`coderd/agentapi/context.go` returns `drpcerr.Unimplemented` for
`PushContextState`. The real handler that persists
`workspace_agent_context` rows, hydrates chats, and emits dirty events
lives in CODAGT-569.
## Tests
24 tests across `agent/agentcontext` cover types, paths, resolver
behavior with file caps, skill containers, MCP secret omission, symlink
target validation, the recursive watcher firing on real fsnotify events,
manager source CRUD / `Resync` / `SeedSources` / `Run` lifetime, the
HTTP API, the DRPC adapter, and the push retry / initial-flag /
unimplemented paths. Passes `go test -race -count=2`.
`TestAgent_ContextStatePushed` boots a full agent against
`agenttest.FakeAgentAPI` (which now records `PushContextState` traffic)
and asserts the seeded `AGENTS.md` appears in a snapshot push with
`schema_version = 1`.
<details>
<summary>Notes for reviewers</summary>
- Source CRUD is workspace-agent-token only; coderd is not in the path
for source mutation.
- Per-resource cap 64 KiB, aggregate 2 MiB, count cap 500; resources
past the cap ship with `StatusExcluded` and an empty payload so the
aggregate hash still detects content edits. MCP-emitted resources
enforce both a per-provider count cap and the aggregate byte cap.
- Symlinks inside the scan root are followed; symlinks pointing outside
(or broken) are rejected with `StatusExcluded` so credentials reachable
via a stray symlink stay off the wire.
- The initial push gates `lifecycle = ready` in the eventual full
design. For this PR the `SeedSources` plus `handleManifest`-driven
`Resync` keeps the snapshot fresh; the live push loop ships now and
DRPCPusher translates the coderd `Unimplemented` stub into a clean exit.
- The `PLUGIN`/`HOOK`/`SUBAGENT`/`COMMAND` kinds are reserved in proto
and Go enums but unused; the Claude Code plugin resolver ships in a
follow-up that does not need a schema migration.
- Two follow-ups remain, both tracked by
[CODAGT-569](https://linear.app/codercom/issue/CODAGT-569/enable-agent-api-v210-pushcontextstate-bump-currentminor-wire-coderd):
(1) the chatd-side handler that persists snapshots and dirties chats;
(2) the `coder exp chat context` CLI command set for
`list`/`show`/`add`/`remove`/`refresh`.

RFC: [Bridge ↔ Boundaries Correlation
RFC](https://www.notion.so/Bridge-Boundaries-Correlation-313d579be59281f3b4efdbfd6896775a)
Adds three new proto fields for boundary session correlation.
**`ReportBoundaryLogsRequest`**
- `session_id` (string, field 2) — UUID generated by boundary at
startup,
shared across all batches from a single run.
- `confined_process` (string, field 3) — name of the confined process
(e.g. `claude-code`, `codex`, `copilot`).
**`BoundaryLog`**
- `sequence_number` (uint64, field 4) — monotonically increasing counter
per session, primary ordering key when boundary is in use.
`BoundaryLog.time` already existed at field 2; no change needed there.
API version bumped to v2.9.
No behaviour change in coderd or the agent. This is a pure schema bump
that the boundary repo will consume in its own stack.
> Generated by Coder Agents
Add workspace secrets as a field in the agent manifest protobuf schema.
This allows the control plane to pass user secrets to agents for runtime
injection into workspace sessions.
Message fields:
- env_name: environment variable name (empty for file-only secrets)
- file_path: file path (empty for env-only secrets)
- value: the decrypted secret value as bytes

Adds UpdateAppStatus on the agentsocket, wired up to forward to Coderd over the dRPC connection the agent maintains.
Disclosure: I used AI to generate significant portions of this PR, but hand-reviewed and tweaked the code. I consider it approximately indistinguishable from what I would have done by hand.

This moves updating app status (used by Tasks) into the workspace agent
API over dRPC. This will allow us to update the status without having to
re-authenticate each time, like we would with an HTTP PATCH request.
Further PRs in this stack will pipe these requests thru from the CLI MCP
server to the agentsock and finally to this dRPC call to coderd.
Update the agent protobuf schema (agent/proto/agent.proto) to include:
- subagent_id field in WorkspaceAgentDevcontainer message
- id field in CreateSubAgentRequest message
Bump the Agent API version from v2.7 to v2.8 and update all client
references throughout the codebase (ConnectRPC27 -> ConnectRPC28,
DRPCAgentClient27 -> DRPCAgentClient28).
Fixes all our Go file imports to match the preferred spec that we've _mostly_ been using. For example:
```
import (
"context"
"time"
"github.com/prometheus/client_golang/prometheus"
"golang.org/x/xerrors"
"gopkg.in/natefinch/lumberjack.v2"
"cdr.dev/slog/v3"
"github.com/coder/coder/v2/codersdk/agentsdk"
"github.com/coder/serpent"
)
```
3 groups: standard library, 3rd partly libs, Coder libs.
This PR makes the change across the codebase. The PR in the stack above modifies our formatting to maintain this state of affairs, and is a separate PR so it's possible to review that one in detail.
Upgrades to slog v3 which includes a small, but backward incompatible API change to the acceptible call arguments when logging. This change allows us to verify via compile time type checking that arguments are correct and won't cause a panic, as was possible in slog v1, which this replaces (v2 was tagged but never used in coder/coder).
It also updates dependencies that also use slog and were updated.
I've left the `aibridge` dependency as a commit SHA, under the assumption that the team there (cc @pawbana @dannykopping ) will tag and update the dependency soon and on their own schedule.
Other dependencies, I pushed new tags.
Add the AgentAPI changes to support the feature that transmits boundary
logs from workspaces to coderd via the agent API for eventual re-emission to
stderr. The API handlers are stubs for now because I'm trying to land
this feature from multiple smaller PRs.
High level architecture:
- Boundary records resource access in batches and sends proto message to
agent
- Agent proxies messages to coderd **(captured by the API changes in
this PR)**
- coderd re-emits logs to stderr
RFC:

Completely missed this in the original PR for adding support for
creating sub agents. This now allows specifying a list of display apps
to be added to the agent.
Closes https://github.com/coder/internal/issues/619
Implement the `coderd` side of the AgentAPI for the upcoming
dev-container agents work.
`agent/agenttest/client.go` is left unimplemented for a future PR
working to implement the agent side of this feature.
Closes https://github.com/coder/internal/issues/648
This change introduces a new `ParentId` field to the agent's manifest.
This will allow an agent to know if it is a child or not, as well as
knowing who the owner is.
This is part of the Dev Container Agents work
In the presence of multiple devcontainers, it would be nice to
differentiate them by name. This change inherits the resource name from
terraform.
Refs #17076
Currently we query only the underlying host's memory usage for our
memory resource monitor. This PR changes that to check if the workspace
is in a container, and if so it queries the container's memory usage,
falling back to the host's memory usage if not.
This change allows specifying devcontainers in terraform and plumbs it
through to the agent via agent manifest.
This will be used for autostarting devcontainers in a workspace.
Depends on coder/terraform-provider-coder#368
Updates #16423
This change adds a new `ReportConnection` endpoint to the `agentapi`.
The protocol version was bumped previously, so it has been omitted here.
This allows the agent to report connection events, for example when the
user connects to the workspace via SSH or VS Code.
Updates #15139
As part of the new resources monitoring logic - more specifically for
OOM & OOD Notifications , we need to update the AgentAPI , and the
agents logic.
This PR aims to do it, and more specifically :
We are updating the AgentAPI & TailnetAPI to version 24 to add two new
methods in the AgentAPI :
- One method to fetch the resources monitoring configuration
- One method to push the datapoints for the resources monitoring.
Also, this PR adds a new logic on the agent side, with a routine running
and ticking - fetching the resources usage each time , but also storing
it in a FIFO like queue.
Finally, this PR fixes a problem we had with RBAC logic on the resources
monitoring model, applying the same logic than we have for similar
entities.
Replace Depot build action with Nix for Nix dogfood image builds
The dogfood Nix image is now built using Nix's native container tooling instead of Depot. This change:
- Adds Nix setup steps to the GitHub Actions workflow
- Removes the Dockerfile.nix in favor of a Nix-native container build
- Updates the flake.nix to support building Docker images
- Introduces a hash file to track Nix-related changes
- Updates the vendorHash for Go dependencies

Second step to resolve [open_in
issue](https://github.com/coder/terraform-provider-coder/issues/297)
This PR improves the way the open_in parameter is forwarded across the
code, changing the last `string` to const everywhere.
Also make sure it is available and forwarded up to the `CreateLink`
component.
Bumps the Tailnet and Agent API version 2.3, and creates some extra controls and machinery around these versions.
What happened is that we accidentally shipped two new API features without bumping the version. `ScriptCompleted` on the Agent API in Coder v2.16 and `RefreshResumeToken` on the Tailnet API in Coder v2.15.
Since we can't easily retroactively bump the versions, we'll roll these changes into API version 2.3 along with the new WorkspaceUpdates RPC, which hasn't been released yet. That means there is some ambiguity in Coder v2.15-v2.17 about exactly what methods are supported on the Tailnet and Agent APIs. This isn't great, but hasn't caused us major issues because
1. RefreshResumeToken is considered optional, and clients just log and move on if the RPC isn't supported.
2. Agents basically never get started talking to a Coderd that is older than they are, since the agent binary is normally downloaded from Coderd at workspace start.
Still it's good to get things squared away in terms of versions for SDK users and possible edge cases around client and server versions.
To mitigate against this thing happening again, this PR also:
1. adds a CODEOWNERS for the API proto packages, so I'll review changes
2. defines interface types for different API versions, and has the agent explicitly use a specific version. That way, if you add a new method, and try to use it in the agent without thinking explicitly about versions, it won't compile.
With the protocol controllers stuff, we've sort of already abstracted the Tailnet API such that the interface type strategy won't work, but I'll work on getting the Controller to be version aware, such that it can check the API version it's getting against the controllers it has -- in a later PR.

When we exceed the db-imposed limit of logs, we need to communicate that back to the agent. In v1 we did it with a 4xx-level HTTP status, but with dRPC, the errors are delivered as strings, which feels fragile to me for something we want to gracefully handle.
So, this PR adds the log limit exceeded as a field on the response message, and fixes the API handler to set it as appropriate instead of an error.
`agentsdk` depends on `agent/proto` because it needs to get the version to dial.
Therefore, the conversion routines need to live in `agentsdk` so that we can convert to and from the Manifest.
I briefly considered refactoring the agent to only reference `proto.Manifest`, but decided against it because we might have multiple protocol versions in the future, its useful to have a protocol-independent data structure.
This PR updates the Agent API to use the appearance.Fetcher, which is set by entitlement code in Enterprise coderd.
This brings the agentapi into compliance with the Enterprise feature.
fixes#10531
Adds a check for `version` on connection to the Agent API websocket endpoint. This is primarily for future-proofing, so that up-level agents get a sensible error if they connect to a back-level Coderd.
It also refactors the location of the `CurrentVersion` variables, to be part of the `proto` packages, since the versions refer to the APIs defined therein.
Fixes#11451
A refactor of the Agent API passes metrics as protobufs, which include pointers to label name/value pairs. The aggregator tested for sameness by doing a shallow compare of label values, which for different stats reports would compare unequal because the pointers would be different.
This fix does a deep compare.
While testing I also noted that we neglect to compare template names. This is unlikely to have caused any issue in practice, since the combination of username/workspace is unique, but in the context of comparing metric labels we should do the comparison.
If a user creates a workspace, deletes it, then recreates from a different template, we could in principle have reported incorrect stats for the old template.
Refactors our DRPC service definitions slightly.
In the previous version, I inserted the RPCs from the tailnet proto directly into the Agent service. This makes things hard to deal with because DRPC then generates a new set of methods with new interfaces with the `DRPCAgent_` prefixed. Since you can't have a single method that takes different argument types, we couldn't reuse the implementation of those RFCs without a lot of extra classes and pass-thru methods.
Instead, the "right" way to do it is to integrate at the DRPC layer. So, we have two DRPC services available over the Agent websocket, and register them both on the DRPC `mux`.
Since the tailnet proto RPC service is now for both clients and agents, I renamed some things to clarify and shorten.
This PR also removes the `TailnetAPI` implementation from the `agentapi` package, and the next PR in the stack replaces it with the implementation from the `tailnet` package.
