Jon Ayers b33ff2d851 fix: redact env var values in agent debug manifest endpoint (#26904) 2026-07-01 10:46:35 -05:00
Ehab Younes f5cb2e547e feat: include rotated agent logs in support bundles (#26055)
Support bundles previously captured only the active coder-agent.log, losing
history across agent restarts. Add an optional `after` filter to the agent's
/debug/logs endpoint: without it the endpoint is unchanged (active log only,
10 MiB cap); with it the response includes the active log plus rotated
coder-agent-*.log files modified after the cutoff, newest first. Support
bundles request the last 24h.

Mathias Fredriksson 3955df796e fix(agent): unify working directory resolution (#26102)
agentssh's CommandEnv, sftpHandler, and agentproc each resolved the
session working directory on their own and had drifted: sftpHandler used
the configured directory without checking it exists and bypassed the
injected EnvInfoer, while the others stat-checked and fell back to home.
Home and shell lookups could also skip the EnvInfoer seam through the
exported usershell.HomeDir and Get.

Resolve through a single usershell.ResolveWorkingDirectory and confine
host home and shell lookups to usershell, so SSH sessions, the process
API, and tests can no longer diverge and the injected environment is
always honored. This also fixes SFTP landing in a configured directory
that no longer exists.

Mathias Fredriksson d00ffbd828 feat(agent): unify session env via EnvInfoer (#26099)
The agent resolved the session home directory two ways. agentssh went
through usershell, while agentproc called os.UserHomeDir directly and
skipped its user.Current fallback. Routing both through a single
usershell.EnvInfoer makes the resolution consistent, and agentproc
now gets the same fallback as the rest of the agent.

The shared seam is injectable, so SSH session tests can drive
environment resolution without touching real system state.

Zach 45475b803e test(agent): remove race in TestAgent_Session_TTY_QuietLogin/Hushlogin (#25865)
The subtest previously called session.Shell(), wrote "exit 0" through a
client-side PTY, and then waited indefinitely on session.Wait(). Under
the race detector the byte stream occasionally arrived at the agent
before the remote shell was in its read loop and was silently discarded;
the shell never exited, session.Wait() blocked until the go-test
watchdog kicked in and killed the test binary.

The agent writes the message of the day announcement banner
synchronously in agentssh.startPTYSession before forking the user shell.
The subtest now repeatedly sends "exit 0" and the writes/waiting on
session.Wait are time bound.

Also fixes a pre-existing test bug where the empty bytes intended to
create ~/.hushlogin were written to the MOTD path. The previous test
passed only because the MOTD file ended up empty, not because the
hushlogin code path was exercised. With the file now placed at the
correct path, the assertion genuinely validates isQuietLogin.

Mathias Fredriksson 20d678b886 fix(agent): install connstats callback at statsReporter creation (#25819)
The stats reporter only installed the connstats callback on the TUN
device after the report loop negotiated an interval with the server.
Traffic that flowed before that point (e.g. an SSH handshake) was
silently dropped because the TUN wrapper's stats.Load() returned nil.

We now install the connstats callback immediately and we no longer
re-install the callback every interval unless the interval changed.

Fixes flaky TestAgent_Stats_SSH, TestAgent_Stats_ReconnectingPTY,
and TestAgent_Stats_Magic by ensuring the connstats callback is
always installed before network traffic can flow.

Michael Suchacz cd54861e4f fix(agent): set utf8 locale for tmux terminals (#25530)
> Mux is updating this PR on behalf of Mike.

## Summary
- Set a UTF-8 `LC_CTYPE` fallback for reconnecting PTYs when no
effective UTF-8 locale is present.
- Preserve non-empty `LC_ALL` so explicit user locale choices still win.
- Add tmux glyph regression coverage for reconnecting PTYs, plus unit
coverage for the env helper.
- Stabilize the tmux regression by keeping the pane alive until the
glyph output is observed.
- Keep the env helper unit test expectations OS-aware for Windows and
cover unhyphenated UTF8 locales.

## Validation

Atif AliandMichael Suchacz 7ffeac711c fix: correct web terminal glyph rendering and tmux display (#25059)
The web terminal was rendering Claude Code and Codex incorrectly because
xterm's custom glyph renderer draws block and quadrant characters with
its own geometry. The reconnecting PTY screen backend also exposed
`screen.xterm-256color` to the user's shell, which made tmux rendering
issues harder to reason about.

This PR:

* Disables xterm custom glyph rendering so the selected terminal font
draws block and quadrant glyphs.
* Adds a tiny Powerline-only terminal symbol fallback font so common
prompt separators still render when custom glyphs are disabled.
* Configures the screen backend to keep the inner shell `TERM` aligned
with the browser terminal emulator, including background color erase
behavior.
* Tightens reconnecting PTY tests around prompt synchronization and
`TERM` assertions.

Zach 72f35e1cd3 feat: runtime user secrets injection into workspaces (#24313)
Injects user secrets into workspace agents at runtime via the agent
manifest. Secrets with an environment variable name are set as
environment variables in every agent session and startup script. Secrets
with a file path are written to disk before startup scripts run.

- Fetch user secrets in GetManifest and convert to proto
- Defensively strip secrets from manifests received by the agent to
   avoid accidental leakage
- Add WorkspaceSecret type and proto conversion helpers to agentsdk
- Write secret files eagerly on manifest fetch (0600 perms, 0700 dirs)
- Inject secret env vars per-session in updateCommandEnv
- Expand ~/paths using caller-resolved home directory
- Log file write errors without blocking workspace startup

Garrett Delfosse 7b7baea851 feat: support disabling reverse/local port forwarding in agent SSH server (#24026)
The agent SSH server unconditionally allows all four SSH forwarding
paths (TCP local, TCP reverse, Unix local, Unix reverse). This is a
sandbox escape vector when workspaces are used for AI agent containment
— a reverse tunnel lets anything inside the workspace reach the user's
local machine, bypassing network isolation.

This adds two new agent CLI flags / environment variables:

- `--block-reverse-port-forwarding` /
`CODER_AGENT_BLOCK_REVERSE_PORT_FORWARDING` — blocks both TCP (`ssh -R`)
and Unix socket reverse forwarding
- `--block-local-port-forwarding` /
`CODER_AGENT_BLOCK_LOCAL_PORT_FORWARDING` — blocks both TCP (`ssh -L`)
and Unix socket local forwarding

Template admins can set these via the `env` block on the container/VM
resource that runs the agent (e.g. `docker_container`,
`kubernetes_pod`), or via `coder_env` resources tied to the agent.

Fixes https://github.com/coder/coder/issues/22275

<details>
<summary>Implementation notes</summary>

Follows the existing `BlockFileTransfer` pattern:

1. `agent/agentssh/agentssh.go` — New `BlockReversePortForwarding` and
`BlockLocalPortForwarding` fields on `Config`. TCP callbacks check these
before allowing forwarding. The `direct-streamlocal@openssh.com` channel
handler is wrapped to reject Unix local forwards.
2. `agent/agentssh/forward.go` — `forwardedUnixHandler` gains a
`blockReversePortForwarding` field to reject
`streamlocal-forward@openssh.com` requests.
3. `agent/agent.go` — New fields on `Options` and `agent` struct,
plumbed to SSH config.
4. `cli/agent.go` — New serpent flags with env vars.
5. Tests cover all four blocked paths: TCP local, TCP reverse, Unix
local, Unix reverse.

Cian Johnston cd784c755a fix(agent): exorcise data race haunting contextConfigAPI on reconnect (#23946)
Fixes: coder/internal#1441

- Move `contextConfigAPI` init from `handleManifest` to `init()`,
matching all other API fields
- Change `agentcontextconfig.NewAPI` to accept `func() string` closure
(lazy directory evaluation)
- `Config()` and HTTP handler now compute on demand via
`a.manifest.Load().Directory`
- Widen `TestAgent_Reconnect` to loop 5 reconnections with a non-empty
manifest directory
- Add `TestContextConfigAPI_InitOnce` internal test verifying lazy eval
across manifest changes
- Add `TestNewAPI_LazyDirectory` unit test for the lazy contract

Mathias Fredriksson c60a3568d7 fix: resolve flaky TestAgent_Session_TTY_MOTD_Update (#23375)
The 5ms ServiceBannerRefreshInterval caused excessive DRPC
connection churn (200 calls/s) under the race detector, creating
heavy mutex contention on FakeAgentAPI and significant CPU overhead.
This made the test timing-sensitive in ways that manifested as
session.Wait() hangs, killing the test binary via timeout.

Three changes:
- Increase refresh interval from 5ms to testutil.IntervalFast (25ms),
  reducing DRPC connection churn and mutex contention by 5x.
- Replace bare <-ready receives with testutil.TryReceive so the test
  fails with context expiry instead of hanging indefinitely.
- Add a timeout to session.Wait() in testSessionOutput to prevent any
  SSH session hang from killing the entire test binary.

	"github.com/coder/coder/v2/codersdk/agentsdk"

)
```
Spike Curtis 49b34a716a fix: fix slog to always use array of Fields (#21426)
Upgrades to slog v3 which includes a small, but backward incompatible API change to the acceptible call arguments when logging. This change allows us to verify via compile time type checking that arguments are correct and won't cause a panic, as was possible in slog v1, which this replaces (v2 was tagged but never used in coder/coder).
It also updates dependencies that also use slog and were updated.
I've left the `aibridge` dependency as a commit SHA, under the assumption that the team there (cc @pawbana @dannykopping ) will tag and update the dependency soon and on their own schedule.
Other dependencies, I pushed new tags.
Mathias Fredriksson 6bea82bafc fix(agent/agentssh)!: use configured directory for SFTP connections (#21194)
BREAKING CHANGE: SFTP/SCP now respects the agent's configured directory.
If your workspace agent has a custom `dir` configured in Terraform, SFTP
and SCP connections will now land there instead of `$HOME`. Previously,
only SSH and rsync respected this setting, which caused confusing behavior
where `scp file.txt coder:.` and `rsync file.txt coder:.` would put files
in different places. If you have scripts that relied on SFTP/SCP always
using `$HOME` regardless of agent configuration, you may need to use
explicit paths instead.
Ethan 04d5ff88e4 test: bump TestAgent_SessionTTYShell timeout (#21155)
## Problem
The `TestAgent_SessionTTYShell` test was flaking on macOS CI runners
with:
```
match deadline exceeded: context deadline exceeded (wanted 1 bytes; got 0: "")
```
The test uses `WaitShort` (10s) for the context timeout when waiting for
shell prompt output via `Peek(ctx, 1)`. On slow macOS CI runners, the
shell startup can exceed this timeout due to resource contention.
This is evidenced in the failure logs, the SSH session was not reported
by the agent until the 10s timeout is nearly up - it took a while to
connect.
## Solution
Increase the timeout from `WaitShort` (10s) to `WaitMedium` (30s). This
matches the timeout used by `ExpectMatch` internally and gives the shell
more time to initialize on slow CI machines.
definitely out of scope of this test for agent metrics. So, we'll just
assert that the metrics exist with the correct labels (`derp`, `p2p`)
Spike Curtis 5807fe01e4 test: prevent TestAgent_ReconnectingPTY connection reporting check from interfering (#20210)
When we added support for connection tracking in the Workspace agent, we modified the ReconnectingPTY tests to add an initial connection that we immediately hang up and check that connections are logged.
In the case of `screen`-based pty handling, hanging up the initial connection can race with the initial attachment to the `screen` process, and cause that process to exit early. This leaves subsequent connections to the same session ID to fail.
In this PR we just use different pty session IDs so that the initial connections we do to verify logging don't interfere with the rest of the test.
_Arguably_ it's a bug in our Reconnecting PTY code that hanging up immediately can leave the system in a weird state, but we do eventually recover and error out, so I don't think it's worth trying to fix.
`HOME` is not a standard Windows environment variable, and we don't have any specific Code in Coder to set it on SSH, so I've removed the test case. Amazingly/bizarrely the Windows test runners set this variable, but this is not standard Windows behavior so we shouldn't be including it in our tests.
Also the command `true` is not valid on a default Windows install.
```
true: The term 'true' is not recognized as a name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or executable program.
Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.
```
I'm not really sure how the CI runners are allowing this test to pass, but again, it's not standard so we shouldn't be doing it.
Mathias Fredriksson 3de0003e4b feat(agent): send devcontainer CLI logs during recreate (#17845)
We need a way to surface what's happening to the user, since autostart
logs here, it's natural we do so during re-create as well.
Mathias Fredriksson 7af188bfc1 fix(agent): fix unexpanded devcontainer paths for agentcontainers (#17736)
Devcontainers were duplicated in the API because paths weren't
absolute, we now normalize them early on to keep it simple.
Spike Curtis 73f5af82ad test: fix TestAgent_Lifecycle/ShutdownScriptOnce to wait for stats (#17387)
fixes: https://github.com/coder/internal/issues/576
TestAgent_Lifecycle/ShutdownScriptOnce hits error logs which cause test
failures. These logs are legit errors and have to do with shutting down
the agent before it has fully come up.
This PR changes the test to wait for the agent to send stats (a good
indicator that it's fully up, and beyond the errors that have triggered
test failures in past) before closing it.
Spike Curtis b1f59aafc1 fix: stop checking gauges unrelated to TestAgent_Stats_Magic (#17290)
Fixes https://github.com/coder/internal/issues/564
The test is asserting too much, including stats guages that are not directly related to the thing we are trying to test: ConnectionCount, RxBytes, and TxBytes.  I think the author assumed that these are counts that only go up, but they are guages and eventually zero back out, so there are race condtions where not all of them are non-zero at the same time.
